  • Penicillin amidohydrolase was partially purified from the fermented broth of Bacillus megaterium, and was immobilized on nylon fiber. The surface area of nylon fiber was increased by roughening it with fine sand and activated by acid treatment. The free amino groups on the nylon fiber exposed by such treatment were then utilized to immobilize the penicillin amidase. Enzymatic properties of penicillin amidohydrolase immobilized on the nylon fiber by covalent bonding and cross linking with glutaraldehyde were studied and compared with those of soluble enzyme. The optimal pH and temperature profile of immobilized enzyme showed only slightly broader peaks, and the values of kinetic constants, $K_m$, $K_{ia}$, and $K_{ip}$, of the immobilized enzyme are only slightly greater than those of the soluble enzyme. These results suggest that the mass transfer effect on the reaction rate for the penicillin amidase immobilized on nylon fiber is not so significant as the enzyme immobilized on some other support material like bentonite. The experimental results of batch reaction agreed well with the results of computer simulation for both the immobilized and soluble enzyme systems, confirming the validity of the rate equation derived which was based on the combined double inhibition by two reaction products.

  • Nylon 6 ultramicrofiber(UMF, monodenier 0.074d) and regular staple fiber(monodenier 2.05d) were dyed with acid and disperse dyes to investigate the effect of the difference of the fiber fineness. Also X-ray diffraction pattern, birefringence, DSC thermogram, moisture regain and water absorption of these fibers are measured. The dyeing rate of nylon UMF with acid dyes is increased compared with that of regular fiber, but not increased for disperse dyes. Also the saturation dye uptake of UMF with acid dyes is higher than that of regular fiber, while it is unchanged for disperse dyes. The moisture regain of UMF is similar to the regular fiber, whereas the water absorption of UMF is two times th그n that of the regular fiber. The crystallinity percentage of UMF is higher than that of regular fiber.

  • Research and development of nano fiber products is very active over the world. Physical characteristics and dyeing properties of nylon 66 nano fiber were investigated in this study. X-ray diffraction, DSC, analysis of amino end group, and water absorption were performed to get information concerning physical properties of nano fiber. Nylon 66 nano fiber was dyed with high molecular mass acid dyes. Effects of dyeing temperature, pH of dyeing solution, and concentration of acid dyes on dyeing properties such as rate of dyeing and the extent of exhaustion, were examined and compared to those of regular fiber. It was found that nano fiber adsorbed acid dyes at lower temperature, got rapidly dyed, and its extents of exhaustion at specific dyeing temperature were higher than regular fiber. It was also observed that nano fiber could adsorb a large amount of acid dye without a significant loss in the extent of exhaustion. Washing fastness of the dyed nano fiber was lower by $1/2\~1$ grade, light fastness by 1 grade than the dyed regular fiber.

  • Nylon was the first commercialized synthetic fiber. It is a polyamide, derived from a diamine and dicarboxylic acid. The nylon fiber has outstanding durability and excellent physical properties such as stiffness, wear and abrasion resistance, friction coefficient and chemical resistance. Due to these properties of nylon 66, nano-sized fibers are produced by electrospinning method in this study. During the past years the nylon 66 fibers have been prepared by conventional melt spining. • In recent years, a number of metal machine parts, in the field of the car manufactures and electronic goods for home, have been replaced by nylon-6 in order to weight, cost, and a period of process of manufacture. It's because nylon-6 materials as an industrial material have higher economical and productive advantage than the metalic ones. However, in domestic injection manufactures, there are few data on fiber glass synthetic on nylon-6. It is said that plastic in process of manufacture using the same injection materials make their results different in large scale according to fiber glass synthetic rate conditions. In this study, we have studied effects of the glass fiber synthetic rate on the characteristics of fatigue failure for nylon-6.

  • Marine microalgae have different collection methods depending on their habitat. In the case of adhesive microalgae, it is difficult to separate organisms from the substrate surface, and contamination is likely to occur during the sampling process. In this study, we analyzed the collection efficiency of adhesive microalgae using three artificial fiber materials (nylon, blend fabric, and viscose rayon). Each fiber showed different fiber diameter and pore characteristics (nylon 26.09 ㎛, blend fabric 56.6 ㎛, viscose rayon 101.3 ㎛). In addition, attached organisms were collected on the surface of artificial substrates at Bukseong Port in Incheon using each tested fiber material. After that, we investigated the population and species composition. The highest number of cells was found in nylon, which was 8 times higher than in the least collected viscose rayon material. In addition, we identified 24 microalgal species from the substrate, demonstrating that the species composition differed from that of surface water. The number of collected microalgae species varied depending on the fiber materials, with nylon containing all the adhesive microalgae. In contrast, only a few microalgae were observed in other fibers. These results suggest that, of the tested fibers, nylon material may be suitable for collecting adhesive microalgae. As a result, this study may be useful for future research on adhesive microalgae.

  • In order to improve the interfacial bonding force and reaction polymerization degree of the carbon fiber reinforced nylon 6 composite material, the surface of the existing epoxy-sizing carbon fiber was desized to remove the epoxy and treated with urethane, nylon and phenoxy sizing agent, was observed. The interfacial bond strength of the resized carbon fiber was confirmed by IFSS (Interfacial Shear Strength) and the fracture surface was observed by scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the interfacial bonding strength of the carbon fiber treated with nylon and phenoxy sizing agents was higher than that of urethane - based sizing. It has been found that the urethane - type resizing carbon fiber has lower interfacial bonding strength than the conventional epoxy - sizing carbon fiber. This result shows that the interfacial bonding between carbon fiber and nylon 6 is improved by removing low activity and smoothness of existing carbon fiber.

  • Thin coating layer of clay minerals was fabricated on nylon fiber and uv-light resistivity of the clay-coated nylons, schematically shown in Figure 1, were investigated. Clay minerals with higher absorbance protect the nylon fibers more effectively from uv light. The coating process is expected as safe and stable procedure because clay and aqueous dispersion of the clay used for the process is innocuous.

  • It has been reported that the surface properties of the plasma treated material were changed while maintaining its bulk properties. In this study, surface modification of nylon fiber by plasma treatment was tried to attain high water-repellency Nylon fiber was treated with RF plasma under a vacuum system using various parameters such as gas specious, processing time and processing power. Morphological changes by low pressure plasma treatment were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Moreover, the mechanical and inherent properties were analyzed by tensile strength, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The high water-repellency property of nylon fiber was evaluated by a water-drop standard test under various conditions in terms of aging effect. The results showed that the water-repellency of plasma-surface-treated nylon fiber was greatly improved compared to untreated nylon fiber.
