  • We investigated the evolution of crystal formation as a function of drawing ratio in poly(1,4-diaminobutane-co-adipic acid-co-${\varepsilon}$-caprolactam-co-diethylenetriamine)(nylon 466T) copolymer formed by four monomers, i.e 1,4-diaminobutane, adipic acid, ${\varepsilon}$-caprolactam, diethylenetriamine(DETA), using synchrotron X-ray scattering measurement. In case of pristine(as spun) nylon 466T fiber, it was consisted with unoriented nylon $6{\alpha}$ and unoriented nylon $46{\alpha}$ phases. As increase the drawing ratio, unoriented nylon $6{\alpha}$ was transformed to oriented ${\gamma}$ phase, while unoriented nylon $46{\alpha}$ changed to oriented $46{\alpha}$ phase. The effect of the addition of DETA was not observed in the pristine fibers. However, DETA affected to restrict the formation of crystals at the maximum drawing condition, and as a result it had a role to increase the moisture regain.

  • This paper examined dyeing using sulfur dye with nylon and the characteristics of high gauge knitting for generating high functionality including light weight, wind resistance and elasticity using fine nylon threads. Yarn tension, stitch field and knitting speed of high and fine gauge knitting were measured. The influence of reducing agents on sulfur dye, optimum dyeing conditions and fastness features in nylon dyeing were analyzed. The analysis results are presented below. When nylon (Hyoseong, 40d/34f) and spandex (Hyoseong, 20d) for use as hosiery yarn were used to knit high gauge and flat weave, 44 gauge, the effective knitting conditions were a stitch field over 8.2cm in 1 course length, yarn tension of less than 5g and knitting speed below 18rpm. Nylon dyeing using sulfur dye showed effective results when a rongalite reducing agent was used at more than 10% o.w.f. and dyeing was maintained at $98^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. For dyeing nylon and spandex composite using sulfur dye, color fastness in washing, water, daylight and friction were higher than Class 4 or 5, which indicated a superior property. The analysis results verified that the existing problems in nylon dyeing could be solved by using sulfur dyes that don't use heavy metals due to superior fastness and therefore quality, high gauge nylon knit products could be produced.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties and hand values of polypropylene knit and to analyze its color-fastness for light, laundering and abrasion, comparing to nylon and polyester knits. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Polypropylene stretched more with less force than nylon and polyester and its elastic recovery and shape stability were better than nylon and polyester. 2. Polypropylene was more flexible than nylon and polyester. 3. Polypropylene stretched more easily for shearing but its recovery from shearing was less than nylon and polyester. 4. Polyester had smoother surface than nylon and polyester. 5. Polypropylene was compressed more easily than polyester with less force but less than nylon. Its recovery from compression was more than nylon and polyester. 6. Polypropylene had lower KOSHI and SHARI values and higher FUKURAMI value than nylon and polyester. It had better T.H.V. value than nylon but less than! polyester. 7. Color fastness of polypropylene for lanudering, light, and abrasion in wet and dry conditions was good except polypropylene dyed with red color.

  • The natural dyestuff(chestnut dye) was manufactured from chestnut hulls by boiling in 0.5 NaOH solution and powdering in freeze dryer. To investigate the dyeability and color fastness, cotton, wool, silk and nylon fabrics were dyed under several conditions using the manufactured chestnut dye. Dyeing operation was carried in acidic dyebath of pH 4-5 because the chestnut dye is anionic. Dyeabilities on wool, silk and nylon fabrics were good, especially nylon fabrics were dyed deeper than others. But dyeability on cotton fabrics was not good. All the dyed fabrics showed excellent color fastness to crocking. Color fastness to laupdering of them were moderate to good. Also light fastness of them were moderate to good except nylon. The light fastness of dyed nylon fabrics was as poor as grade 1. But they could be improved to grade 4 by aftertreatment with gallic acid.

  • The purpose of present study is comparing the effect of Teflon Membrane and Nylon Membrane on bone regeneration in rabbit tibia. The 6 defects of $8{\times}8{\times}5mm$ size were drilled with dental handpiece in rabbit tibia, which on left side as an order of Control group(no coverage), Group 1(Nylon $5{\mu}m$ size), Group 3(Nylon $10{\mu}m$ size), and on right side Control group, Group 2($5{\mu}m$ Teflon), Group 4($10{\mu}m$ Teflon). Animals were killed at 7, 10, 14, 42 days to make specimens and observed the difference of healing potentials with light microscopy. The results were as follows ; 1. New bone formation has taken place at 14 days in Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) group comparing to the Control group of massive inflammatory status. 2. Larger pore membrane allows more favorable healing potentials. Bone formation started earlier in larger membrane pore groups than smaller groups, until 14 days. 3. Bone forming potentials of Teflon membrane group was higher than Nylon membrane groups, Control group has the lowest bone forming potentials. 4. New bone formation was almost ended in 42 days, and there was no difference of bone formation between Nylon and Teflon membrane group of different size. There was no difference of bone formation at final stage(42 days) between Nylon membrane and Teflon membrane of same pore size. So nylon membrane may be clinically usable in guided bone regeneration case with further studies.

  • This study deals with antibacterial properties of nylon fiber treated with glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride(GTAC) and silver nanoparticles(AgNPs). Nylon fibers were soaked into GTAC(2-30%, v:v) solution for 20 min. After sample was pre-drying at $80^{\circ}C$ for 10min and cured at $180^{\circ}C$ for 5min. The AgNPs coating was accomplished by soaking in silver colloid solution at $45^{\circ}C$ for 90min. The coated nylon fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy(SEM-EDS). EDS analysis indicated that AgNPs and GTAC was attached on nylon fibers. The treated nylon fibers showed antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli(ATCC 43895), Pseudomonas aeruginosa(ATCC 13388) and Staphylococcus aureus(ATCCBAA-1707).

  • The characteristics of nylon6/ionomer semi interpenetrating networks (IPN) as a molded-in-color (MIC) compound had been studied, and comparison was made with nylon6/ionomer blends. Nylon6/ionomer semi IPN shows better homogeneity in phase morphology than nylon6/ionomer blend, and it caused better anti-scratching performance than the blend. This semi IPN structure resulted in lowered crystallization rate, increased melt viscosity and less temperature dependency of viscosity. As a result, we may expect the enhancement of melt processing characteristics in an injection molding process using nylon6/ionomer semi IPN as a MIC compound.

  • Polyarylate(PAR)-nylon 6 block copolymers of various block lengths were prepared by the anionic polymerization of ${\varepsilon}$-caprolactam using the polymeric activator from hydroxy-difuncrtional PAR and toluene diisocyanate. Phase separated morphology of PAR-nylon 6 block copolymer was suggerted from the thermal properties measured by differential scanning calorometry(d.s.c.). Partial miscbility between PAR block and nylon 6 block of the block copolymers was more evident at shorter length of constituent blocks. In binary blends of PAR-nylon 6 block copolymer with PAR or nylon 6 homopolymer, molecular-level mixing of homopolymers with corresponding blocks of block copolymer was supposed from the thermal properties measured by d.s.c..
