  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to estimate the effects of lifestyle factors on metabolic syndrome (MS) among Korean adults ($age{\geq}20$). Methods: A total of 7,798 subjects (weighted subjects=37,215,961) were recruited from the 2009 Fourth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES IV-3). Data were analyzed by t-test, ${\chi}^2$-test, and logistic regression in consideration of strata, cluster and weight as national data using the SAS 9.1 program. Results: The prevalence of MS by definition of AHA/NHLBI and waist circumference cutoff points for Koreans was 22.4%. The mean clinical MS score for MS patients was 3.4, but the mean score for the non-MS group was 1.2 out of 5.0. Among the lifestyle factors, smoking (OR=1.024), stress ($0.546{\leq}OR{\leq}0.587$) and drinking (OR=1.005) had significant influence on the MS risk and MS scores, but exercise did not. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that further research is necessary on the effect of lifestyle factors on MS risk and nurses should focus on effective programs about smoking, stress and drinking for the prevention and reduction of MS risk.

  • This descriptive correlational study was conducted to identify the variables related to a health promoting behavior in nursing students. 238 nursing students were selected by a convenience sampling method. The data were collected by self - reported questionnaires from 12 to November 19, 2001. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, pearson correlation coefficient, stepwise multiple regression with an SPSS program. The result of this study were as follows: 1. The average score of health promoting behavior was 2.47(SD=0.36)of a 4 point scale. Self actualization (mean=2.94, SD=0.50), interpersonal support (mean=2.91, SD=0.53), stress management(mean=2.58, SD=0.48), health responsibility(mean=2.07, SD=0.48)) nutrition & exercise(mean=2.07, SD=0.48)) were also analyzed. 2. Health promoting behavior showed significant positive correlations with selfesteem(r=0.446, p<0.001) perceived health status(r=0.180, p<0.01), perceived benefits (r=0.183. p<0.01). self-efficacy(r=0.311, p<0.001), social support(r=0.447, p<0.001), control(r=0.169, p<0.01). 3. The combination of self-esteem, social support, affect related to action explained $38.0\%$ of the variance in health promoting behavior. On the basis of the above findings. self-esteem and social support were identified as the variables which explained most of Pender's health promoting model. Nursing strategies enhancing self-esteem and social support which have a more significant effect on health promoting lifestyles should be developed.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the factors related to dental caries and periodontal disease in Korean adults. Methods: The subjects were 5,149 adults over 19 years old who participated in the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2012. Data were analyzed by chi-square test and logistic regression analysis using SPSS 18.0 statistical package program. The questionnaire consisted of 17 questions of independent variables and 2 kinds of dependent variables including dental caries and periodontal diseases by direct interview. The independent variables included 5 questions of general characteristics, 3 questions of health behavior, 5 questions of oral health behavior, and 4 questions of chronic diseases diagnosed by the doctors. Results: The prevalence rate of dental caries was higher in those who did not regularly work out and did not receive regular checkups including dental floss and dental brush use. The prevalence rate of periodontal diseases was higher in male adults, smokers, and those who were obese and had diabetes mellitus, poor oral health care habit without using dental floss and inter-dental brush. Conclusions: In order to prevent the dental caries in the adults, it is very important to do regular exercise and regular dental checkup. The best ways of dental caries prevention include tooth brushing after meal with use of dental floss and inter-dental brush. This study suggests that dental health promotion can be enhanced by smoking cessation, ideal body weight maintenance, timely tooth brushing after meal, and use of dental floss and inter-dental brush.

  • The study was conducted to assess the energy expenditure of 102 elementary school children. Body weight and height were measured and one-day activity diaries were collected by interviewing with children. The children spent about 9 hours 14 minutes sleeping ; 3 hours 40 minutes resting. They spent 86.4% of 24 hours (one day) in 'very light activities' and 13.3% in 'light activities'. Activity coefficient (1.41$\pm$0.11) of boys was significantly higher than that of girls(1.35$\pm$0.07). Activity coefficient (1.41$\pm$0.11) of 4th grade elementary school children was higher than those of 2nd and 6th grade school children(p<0.05). Resting energy expenditure estimated by Harris-Benedict formula, formula based on body surface area and DRI formula for Koreans were 1240.9$\pm$147.4kcal/day, 1386.5$\pm$206.9kcal/day and 1284.5$\pm$199.8 kcal/day. And daily energy expenditure by using Harris-Benedict formula, body surface area formula and DRI formula were 1708.4$\pm$258.8kcal, 1909.8$\pm$341.8kcal and 1771.1$\pm$341.9kcal/day. These results suggested that nutrition and exercise program to increase the energy expenditures of primary school children should be developed.

  • This study was to find out the influence of smoking behavior in Korean adults on chronic diseases using data from the seventh Korea national health and nutrition examination survey(KNHANES VII-2) 2017. The subjects were 6,193. The data were analyzed by frequency analysis, x2 test and logistic regression analysis using SPSS 25 complex samples Win program. The main findings were that smoking age and smoking behavior were considered as early as the age of smoking, and in case of smoking in the past, the prevalence of chronic disease increased 1.30 times and 2.75 times, respectively. When the subjects' health behaviors and demographic characteristics were simultaneously corrected, the higher the age was, the more they were 0.25 times higher and 0.34 times higher than the graduate level of education. As a result, it is necessary to improve lifestyles such as obesity and lack of exercise, to reduce the prevalence of chronic disease in Korean adults, and to pay attention to younger age groups. There is a need to develop interdisciplinary convergent approaches with great interest.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to compare the differences in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome between menopausal women and women of childbearing age and to determine the risk of metabolic syndrome among women in each group depending on whether they eat alone. Methods: Data of 1,813 women from the seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016) were used. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0, and complex sample frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, complex sample cross analysis, complex sample general linear regression, and complex sample logistic regression analysis were performed. Results: According to the results of the study, there was no difference in the prevalence and risk of metabolic syndrome according to the presence of companions during meals between women of childbearing age and post-menopausal women, but there was a difference in health behavior. In other words, women of childbearing age who ate alone had a lot of experience of drinking, and menopausal women who ate alone did not tend to make any efforts to control their weight and did not perform aerobic exercise. In particular, the negative health behavior of menopausal women who ate alone increased the risk of prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Conclusion: The findings indicate that, for women who eat alone, interventions to prevent metabolic syndrome should be differentiated before and after menopause. Therefore, it is suggested to offer an educational program to prevent metabolic syndrome in women of childbearing age as well as provide regular assessments to diagnose metabolic syndrome and health behavior improvement programs for menopausal women.
