  • Studies on the effect of different secondary nutrients in different doses on the leaf yield and biochemical constituents of Terminalia tomentosa revealed that secondary nutrients have promotary effect in increasing the leaf yield and foliar constituents of Terminalia tomentosa. Among all the treatments under study, foliar application of magnesium sulphate (2g/plant, w/v) is the best in respect of leaf yield and biochemical constituents of T. tomentosa. This treatment gave 29.15% increase in leaf yield over control. Chemoassay results further confirmed significant improvement in biochemical constituents. Except crude fibre, moisture, minerals, crude protein and total carbohydrate increased significantly over control.

  • When manufacturing self-healing concrete using bacteria, nutrients are added to increase the activity of the bacteria. Although many researches have focused on the effects of nutrients containing bacterial healing agent on concrete, few have studied the effects of sole nutrient on self-healing of cement composites. Bacterial nutrients, like commercial chemical admixtures, affect hydration characteristics such as flow, setting, hydration heat, mechanical strength of cement composites and also affect the self healing of cement composites by hydration of unhydrated particles. In this study, effect of the four nutrient commonly used in the existing literature on the hydration characteristics of cement composites by its addition was investigated. Flow, setting time, hydration heat, compressive strength have studied for each nutrients added by 1.5% and 3% of cement weight. Experimental results shows that urea and calcium-nitrate can be used up to 3% without significant detrimental effect on cement composites. Addition of calcium-lactate up to 1.5% show better compressive strength than control, but addition of 3% show almost non-hydration. Yeast extract shows detrimental effects on the composites regardless of the amount added.

  • Adsorption and leaching characteristics of the artificial soils produced from water and wastewater treatment sludges were examined. The batch adsorption test and TCLP leaching test were used, and constituents of interest were heavy metals and nutrients. As, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Cd were analyzed for metals, and nitrogen and phosphorus were analyzed for nutrients. All the artificial soils showed strong adsorption and low leaching for the heavy metals, which implies that the artificial soils may not be hazardous to the environment due to heavy metals and even they can be utilized effectively to remove metals in solution like mine and industrial wastewaters. This is quite promising result because in most case heavy metals are the most concern in the application of sludge product to the farmland. For the nutrients, generally, artificial soils showed high adsorption and low leaching except artificial soil from wastewater sludge produced by low temperature firing. The artificial soils produced from water treatment sludge were active in adsorbing nutrients and showed low leaching that they can be practically used to remove nutrients in advanced treatment process of the wastewater. The artificial soils produced from wastewater treatment sludge were less active in adsorbing nutrients and showed high teaching. However, they could be used usefully if applied properly to the plant growing because of their fertilizing effect. Based on the test results, overall, the artificial soils were thought to be not hazardous to the environment and they could be more useful if applied properly.

  • In order to understand the impact for decomposition of blue-green algae Microcystis on water quality, the algae were cultivated with collection of natural population during approximately one month, when water-bloom of Microcystis dominated at August 31, 1999 in the lower part of the Okchon Stream. The enrichment of inorganic NㆍP nutrients didn't in algal assay and the effect of Microcystis on water duality was assessed from the variation of nutrients by algal senescence. Microcystis population seemed to play a temporary role of sink for nutrients in the water body. Initial algal density of Microcystis was 2.3×10/sup 6/ cells/㎖. When Microcystis population died out under light condition, algal NㆍP nutrients between 9∼12 days affected to increase of biomass after reuse by other algal growth as soon as release to the ambient water. However, cellular nutrients under dark condition were almost moved into the water during algal cultivation. NH₄, NO₃ and SRP concentration were highly increased with 160, 17 and 79 folds, respectively relative to the early. As a result, the senescence of Microcystis population seemed to be an important biological factor in which cause more eutrophy and increase of explosive algal development by a lot of nutrients transfer to water body. There are significantly observed an effort of reduce for production of inner organic matters such a phytoplankton as well as load pollutants from watershed in side of the water quality management of reservoir.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a software program for nutritional counseling by assessment of nutrients intake status and health degree by using semi-quantitative frequency food intake method and the questionnaire of Cornell Medical Index(CMI) and farmers' syndrome. This program is composed with three parts, nutrients intake, health status with body complaints, and nutrition counseling contents for diet therapy of each body condition states. First, nutrient intakes with percentage of Korean Recommended Dietary Allowances, and quantities of other nutrients intake were calculated and presented in an out-put screen. Second, the different body complaints(farmers' syndrome, anemia, hypertension, gastrointestinal problem, and cardiovascular complaints) were divided 3 groups of health status as normal. suspected and ailment. The contents of nutritional counseling with recommended food kinds. intake quantities. and recommended preparation methods were shown by button click of each health state of body complaints. And also this program could serve several times for one person to compare nutrition education and counseling effect by use of pre and post presentation results. This programs would be effect to home extension workers of rural development administration for farmers' nutrition counseling.

  • This survey was undertaken to evaluate the correlationship between the nutrients intakes and the environmental factors that was assumed to influence to them in the preschool children in Masan city. Their average energy intake was met with the korean recommended dietary Allowance(RDA), and the other nutrients intakes exceeded to. The percentage of carbohydrate, fat and protein among daily total energy intakes was showed 67 : 18 : 15 in order and it is similar to the proposal-value of RDA. The higher socioeconomic level of family, and educational degree of their parent were, the more amounts of nutrients intakes inc4eased. Especially educational level of mother can affect the amounts of nutrients intakes greatly. It is considered that the development of nutritional program for the more concrete and various education for their patron should be done.

  • To investigate the effect of on-site bioremediation in soil that have been contaminated by hydrocarbon fuel spills, petroleum-degrading bacteria isolated from soil around petroleum chemical industry and microbial agents were constructed. We investigated biopiles for on-site bioremediation of soil contaminated (5000 mg per kg) with bunker A fuel in five independent lab-scale experiments. Five biopile units constituting the following treatments: (1) control with no nutrients and microbial agents (2) microbial agent M plus nutrients (3) microbial agent C plus nutrients (4) only microbial agent C (5) control with only nutrients. The results were highly different one another. After 30 days in treatments with optimal condition, total petroleum hydrocarbons were reduced to below 10 mg per kg of soil at the biopile units mixed with microbial agents, but control biopile units show that were reduced from 1,105 to 2,588 mg per kg of soil. Our results show that microbial agents at on-site bioremediation of fuel-contaminated soil is highly effective.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the dietary enhancement program for rural elderly. The subjects consisted of 71 normal healthy elderly aged over 60 living in rural and senior citizen center. Daily supplementation of 20g soybean powder of 3 months revealed no statistically significant elevation in serum parameters of the elderly, but resulted in the increment in the number of the subject with normal range of serum parameters and the improvement in perceptions of health status by CMI score, even though the nutrients intake had constantly lowered. The nutrients intake of rural elderly was very low: energy intake was 59-68% of RDA, that of protein 47~59%, and clacium 21~60% only. Supplementation of 20 g soybean powder per day for 3 months, did not enhance nutrients intake of rural elderly. We can recommended that constant nutrients supplementation program as well as dietary enhancement program are needed to improve the quality of life of rural elderly.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Epigenetic regulation by nutrients can influence the development of specific diseases. This study sought to examine the effect of individual nutrients and nutrient families in the context of preventing chronic metabolic diseases via epigenetic regulation. The inhibition of lipid accumulation and inflammation by nutrients including proteins, lipids, vitamins, and minerals were observed, and histone acetylation by histone acetyltransferase (HAT) was measured. Correlative analyses were also performed. MATERIALS/METHODS: Nutrients were selected according to information from the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. Selected nutrient functionalities, including the attenuation of fatty acid-induced lipid accumulation and lipopolysaccharide-mediated acute inflammation were evaluated in mouse macrophage Raw264.7 and mouse hepatocyte AML-12 cells. Effects of the selected nutrients on in vitro HAT inhibition were also evaluated. RESULTS: Nitric oxide (NO) production correlated with HAT activity, which was regulated by the amino acids group, suggesting that amino acids potentially contribute to the attenuation of NO production via the inhibition of HAT activity. Unsaturated fatty acids tended to attenuate inflammation by inhibiting NO production, which may be attributable to the inhibition of in vitro HAT activity. In contrast to water-soluble vitamins, the lipid-soluble vitamins significantly decreased NO production. Water- and lipid-soluble vitamins both exhibited significant inhibitory activities against HAT. In addition, calcium and manganese significantly inhibited lipid accumulation, NO production, and HAT activity. CONCLUSIONS: Several candidate nutrients and their family members may have roles in the prevention of diseases, including hepatic steatosis and inflammation-related diseases (i.e., nonalcoholic steatohepatitis) via epigenetic regulation. Further studies are warranted to determine which specific amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids and lipid-soluble vitamins or specific minerals influence the development of steatosis and inflammatory-related diseases.
