Objectives : The purpose of this study was investigation of quality and quantity of nutritional intake related oral health status among Korean elders. Methods : The nutrient intake and the dietary quality was evaluated on the basis of the Dietary Reference Intakes For Koreans(KDRIs). Chi-square test for Complex Samples was used to determine the relationship between oral health and inadequate nutrient intake in Korean elders. The complex samples general linear model was used to test difference of average value difference of nutrient intake percentage compared to dietary reference intake(DRI), energy intake rate from three major nutrients, average mean adequacy ratio(MAR) and index of nutritional quality(INQ) related oral health status. Age, sex and total energy intake was compensated for this analysis. PASW 18 was used for statistical analysis. Results : We could found the difference of the nutrient intake and the dietary quality related oral health status among Korean elders. Especially, Nutrient intake percentage and component ratio of protein among energy intake rate from three major nutrient was lower as oral health status became worse. The percentage of subjects with nutritional intakes under showed highest level in worst oral health status. As oral health status became worse, average mean adequacy ratio(MAR) was lower and the number of nutrient of which index of nutritional quality(INQ) was under 1 was more. Conclusions : From the result above, this study clearly shows the level of oral health affecting the inequalities of eating and the food for the people. And the various propose of oral health policies is needed for vulnerable groups who needs solution to solve the problem of inequality of food distribution where intensive distribution of nutrition problem occurred. Sufficient, safe, and a variety of healthy food intake is a fundamental right of our people. And also, to apply this policy in reality, institutional arrangements and organizations, and specific performing system will be needed.
This study aimed at improving the method of oil cake application in maize. The experiment was conducted during 2 years at NAS (National Institute of Agricultural Sciences) experimental field, located in Wanju-kun, Jeollabuk-do. Growth factors and nutrient use efficiency were evaluated depending on oil cake application depth, placement, and application rate. Difference in oil cake application method and depth was tested in 2012 and different placements of oil cake application were compared in 2013. Plant height, SPAD value, and dry weight of stem and corn were investigated. SPAD value, dry weight of stem and corn were significantly higher in oil cake banding treatment (OB5, 5 cm depth) as compared to others application methods, i.e. spreading (OS0), deep banding (OB10) and banding + spreading (OB5S). In addition, dry weight of stem and corn of banding treatments (OBL, OBLL) on rhizosphere and in between row (OBR) were higher than spreading treatment (OSP). Furthermore, in case of reduced application rate in additional fertilization did not decrease dry weight of corn and increased nutrient use efficiency. Therefore, it is concluded that banding application in 5 cm-depth and rhizosphere can improve growth and nutrient use efficiency in maize production.

This study was conducted to investigate the possibility of replacing imported Timothy hay (TH) with domestic Italian ryegrass silage (IRGS) as a horse feed considering feed quality, nutrient digestibility and feed price. Two experimental diets (TH and IRGS) were fed to six-headed Thoroughbred (body weight, 475.7±33.3kg) of the Korea Racing Authority of Wondang Stud Farm. The 3 head animals were assigned to Control group (TH) and Treatment group (IRGS), respectively. The nutrient digestibility was determined by the total collection method. IRGS is enough for using as a horse feed because its Relative feed value(RFV) was higher than TH and its fermentation quality is suitable for horses. Although no difference was observed in nutrient digestibility, Total digestible nutrients(TDN), and Digestible energy(DE) between Control and Treatment group (p>0.05), the fact that price of IRGS was much lower (53.7~62.4%) than that of TH indicates IRGS has competitive advantage over TH as a horse forage feed. The present study indicates that IRGS can be fully replaced with TH due to its superior economic value even though the similarity of its nutrient digestibility, TDN, and DE to TH.
This study was performed to develop a more rapid and simple nutrient diagnosis method of plants than the conventional leaf analysis method. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. jangil banbaek) was planted in the mixed media produced by mixing perlite and rock wool at 1:1 (v/v) ratio. The Yamazakki nutrient solution for cucumber was supplied to the media using micro-drip irrigation system. Experimental plots were consisted of no fertilization, deficient fertilization, adequate fertilization, and surplus fertilization for N, P and K. Specific color difference sensor value (SCDSV) measured by chlorophyll meter was closely related to total-N concentration in leaves measured by the conventional method. Nitrate, $PO_4$ and K concentration in petiole sap measured by test strips showed a significant relationship with total-N, P and K concentration in leaves. Linear regression equations between $NO_3$, $PO_4$ and K concentration in petiole sap and total-N, P and K concentration in the leaves were prepared. Optimum levels of $NO_{3}$, $PO_{4}$ and K in petiole sap were obtained by plugging the optimum concentrations of total-N, P and K in the leaves by other researchers into the equations. In conclusion, the SCDSV measured by chlorophyll meter and the concentration of $NO_3$, P and K in petiole sap measured by the test strips would be suitable for rapid estimation of plant nutrient status.

High amounts of lemon seeds are discarded as by-products of processing industries. It is important to find some measures, whereby they could be used in value-added ways. Although few studies have been conducted on lemon seed oils, no study has been conducted on the nutrient content of lemon seed sprouts. The objective of this study was to investigate the nutritional value and antioxidant potential of lemon seeds and sprouts. The 1,1-diphenly-2-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging potential, total polyphenol, and total free amino acid content were higher in the sprouts than in the seeds. Similarly, the content of such mineral elements as Fe, Na, and Zn, increased with germination. However, salicylic acid and total mineral content were lower in the sprouts than in the seeds. The results indicate that lemon seeds and sprouts could be regarded as high-value materials in food and cosmetic industries.

Nutritive value analysis of feed is very important for the growth of livestock, and ensures the efficiency of feeds as well as economic status. However, general laboratory analyses require considerable time and high cost. Near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) is a spectroscopic technique used to analyze the nutritive values of seeds. It is very effective and less costly than the conventional method. The sample used in this study was a corn kernel and the partial least square regression method was used for evaluating nutrient composition, digestibility, and energy value based on the calibration equation. The evaluation methods employed were the coefficient of determination ($R^2$) and the root mean squared error of prediction (RMSEP). The results showed the moisture content ($R^2_{val}=0.97$, RMSEP=0.109), crude protein content ($R^2_{val}=0.94$, RMSEP=0.212), neutral detergent fiber content ($R^2_{val}=0.96$, RMSEP=0.763), acid detergent fiber content ($R^2_{val}=0.96$, RMSEP=0.142), gross energy ($R^2_{val}=0.82$, RMSEP=23.249), in vitro dry matter digestibility ($R^2_{val}=0.68$, RMSEP=1.69), and metabolizable energy (approximately $R^2_{val}$ >0.80). This study confirmed that the nutritive components of corn kernels can be predicted using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy.
The mass flow of water in the stem of melon measured by Sap Flow Gauge was compared with the actual flow calculated by the difference between supply and drainage nutrient water to investigate the possibility and accuracy of estimation of melon's transpiration in rockwool culture. The Sap Flow Gauge which was made with copper-constantan theromocouple and nichrome fiber by our research team, was attached to the 3rd node of melon. The outdoor temperature, room temperature, solar radiation and relative humidity were continually measured. The amount of supply and drainage nutrient water were simultaneously measured for calculation of practical consumption of nutrient water to compare with mass flow of sap. The measuring errors of Sap Flow Gauge were 0.3 to 31.8%, which were small at solar radiation of 20MJ.m$^{2}$.d$^{-1}$ . The mass flow of water was lower for the measured value by Sap Flow Gauge than the actual value at higher solar intensity, however it was higher at lower solar intensity The variation of error rate of each Sap Flow Gauge was 0.1 to 13.0%. The measuring error with Sap Flow Gauge was negatively related with solar intensity and temperature. Therefore, to measure more exactly the mass flow of sap for estimation of melon's transpiration, the compensation factor must be calculated.

Background: Large rivers are ecological treasures with high human value, but most have experienced decades of degradation from industrial and municipal sewage, row-crop agricultural practices, and hydrologic alteration. We reviewed published analyses of long-term fish diversity publications from three intensively managed large river ecosystems to demonstrate the conservation potential of large river ecosystems. Results: We show how the incorporation of recent advances in river concepts will allow a better understanding of river ecosystem functioning and conservation. Lastly, we focus on the Wabash River ecosystem based on high conservation value and provide a list of actions to maintain and support the ecosystem. In the Wabash River, there were originally 66 species of freshwater mussels, but now only 30 species with reproducing populations remain. Although there were multiple stressors over the last century, the largest change in Wabash River fish biodiversity was associated with rapid increases in municipal nutrient loading and invasive bigheaded carps. Conclusions: Like similarly neglected large river systems worldwide, the Wabash River has a surprising amount of ecological resilience and recovery. For instance, of the 151 native fish species found in the 1800s, only three species have experienced local extinctions, making the modern assemblage more intact than many comparable rivers in the Mississippi River basin. However, not all the changes are positive or support the idea of recovery. Primary production underpins the productivity of these ecosystems, and the Wabash River phytoplankton assemblages shifted from high-quality green algae in the 1970s to lower less nutritional blue-green algae as nutrient and invasive species have recently increased. Our recommendations for the Wabash River and other altered rivers include the restoration of natural hydrology for the mainstem and tributaries, nutrient reductions, mechanisms to restore historical hydrologic patterns, additional sediment controls, and improved local hydraulics.
The growth pattern and the seasonal changes in nutrient contents of Humulus japonicus were investigated. Stem length of H. japonicus reached the maximum from 240 to 260 Julian date and the median value was found at 255 Julian date. The maximum leaf area was observed from 235 to 248 Julian date and the median value was at 240 Julian date. The maximum growth rate of the stem length ranged from 205 to 227 Julian date. The leaf area showed the maximum growth rate from 196 to 214 Julian date. The median date in the growth rate of the stem length and leaf area was 212 and 205 Julian date, respectively. The growth rate of H. japonicus was related to rainy season and precipitation. Phosphorus and sodium contents of H. japonicus were correlated with maximum potential rate of relative growth. Although stem biomass of H. japonicus was $ 1.5{\sim}3.5$ times larger than that of leaf, N content of the leaf ($4.48{\sim}5.27%$) was about 2 times higher than that of the stem ($2.00{\sim}3.62%$). High content of N might be responsible for the high growth rate of H. japonicus in summer. This result provides valuable information for appropriate timing for the removal of H. japonicus.
This study was designed to estimate the improvement of Validity for food frequency questionnaire(FFQ) by offering multiple choice portion size in developing a questionnaire. Validity of the two methods(food frequency questionnaire I=FFQ I & Food frequency questionnaire II=FFQ II) was tested in comparison with reference method of the 7-day weighed record(7DWR). Dietary consumption data of the three methods(FFQ I, FFQ II & 7DWR) were collected from 101 female university students for the analysis. Validity was measured in two categories : One was the nutrient intake value from the three methods, the other was the identification of between individual variation within the group. Spearman's rank order correlation test and distribution graphs were used for the analysis. The result showed that individual intake value of the FFQII was closer to that of the 7DWR than that of the FFQ I.Spearman's rank order correlation between the FFQII and the 7DWR did not show any improved correlation. The distribution graphs of nutrient intake derived from both the FFQ I and the FFQII were different from that of the 7DWR. Therefore, it could be suggested that single one portion size food frequency questionnaire is an equally efficient method as a multiple choice food frequency questionnaire to be adopted in epidemiologic studies.
