Cherry tomatoes(Lycopersicon esculentum) were grown in circulating deep flow hydroponic system. The pH of the nutrient solution was increased and the EC was decreased with time. The clusters of ‘Mini Carol’ were branched severely, whereas those of ‘Chelsea Mini’ and ‘Popo’ were a little branched or not. The vegetative growth was similar between cultivars. But the yield of fruits was by far the largest in ‘Mini Carol’ compared to other cultivars, and not different between ‘Chelsea Mini’ and ‘Popo’. Internal qualities of fruits, like as sugar, sugar/organic acid, and vitamin C, are good in ‘Mini Carol’. As the result of panel test, ‘Mini Carol’ is good for softness, easeness of eating, toughness of skin and so on, so it is believed that ‘Mini Carol’ is the most acceptable to consumers in hydroponic culture.

We suggest a hydroponic cultivation system combined with a plasma generator to investigate the changes in the growth and functional substance content of lettuces during the cultivation period. Lettuce seedlings of uniform size were planted in semi-DFT after seeding for 3 weeks, and the plasma-activated water was intermittently operated for 1 hour at an 8 hours cycle for 4 weeks. Lettuces grew with or without plasma-activated water with the nutrient solution in hydroponics culture systems. Among the reactive oxygen species generated during plasma-activated water treatment, brown spots and necrosis appeared in the individuals closer to the plasma generating device due to O3, and there was no significant difference in the growth parameters. While the rutin and total phenolic content of the lettuce shoot grown in the nutrient solution were higher than that of the plasma-activated water, epicatechin contents in plasma-activated water were significantly greater than the nutrient solution. However, in the roots, all kinds of secondary metabolites measured in this work, rutin, epicatechin, quercetin, and total phenolic contents, were significantly higher in the plasma-activated water than the control. These results were indicated that the growth of lettuce was decreased due to the reactive oxygen species such as ozone in the plasma-activated water, but the secondary metabolites in the root zone increased significantly. It has needed to use this technology for the cultivation of root vegetables with the modified plasma-activated water systems to increase secondary metabolite in the roots.
This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of substrates and nutrient solution supplying methods in the media culture using perlite and its mixtures with rice hull, carbonized rice hull. cocopeat on the growth and fruit qualify of hydroponically grown cucumber. Three substrates. Perlite(70%) +rice hull(30%) perlite(70%) +carbonized rice hull(30%) and perlite(70%)+cocopeat(30%) were compared with perlite medium. Supplying methods of nutrient solution were composed of drip irrigation, modified drip irrigation(covered with cheesecloth between drip hose and substrate) and mist system Leaf area of cucumber Plants was lowest in perlite medium while it was highest in mixture of perlite and cocopeat. NAR was higher in the plot of mixture with cocopeat. and same trend was observed in LAI and CGR. T/R ratio was higher in Perlite and perlite mixture with rice hull. Fruit Yields increased in the plot of modified drip irrigation system. When perlite mixture with rice hull used as a substrate. mist system was recommended. Perlite mixture with carbonized rice hull was observed favored in conventional drip irrigation system. Marketable yield and the number of fruit per plant increased and the malformed fruit decreased in the plot of modified drip irrigation system with the mixtures of Perlite and cocopeat.
In the present study, it was performed that the influences of temperatures and electrical conductivity on the mycelial growth and formation of zoosporangium of the $Phytophthora$ sp. in paprika nutriculture. We investigated mycelial growth of $Phytophthora$ sp. at different temperatures. Morphological characteristics of the isolated pathogen from paprika were typically similar to those of $Phytophthora$ sp. such as no septa and formation of zoosporangia. Optimum growth temperature of the pathogen was $25^{\circ}C$. At $20^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$, the mycelium growth deceased, respectively. EC level of nutrient solution the mycelial growth was increased EC 0.5 up to $1.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ and reduced 2.0 up to $3.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. The formation of sporangia was negatively correlated with EC, and the formation of sporangia were highly inhibited at EC $4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$.
This study aims at analyzing environment factors of two tier cropping systems and suggesting effective structures of two tier cropping systems. The environment factors in two tier cropping systems are temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation, temperature of nutrient solution, and wind velocity. Especially, The most important factors are the solar radiation and the solar incident area between the two tiers. During the experiment, observations were made of the two levels in the plastic greenhouse. The highest temperatures were 38.3$^{\circ}C$ in the top level and, 35.5$^{\circ}C$ in the bottom level, respectively. The temperature of the nutrient solution between the two levels showed little difference. The relative humidity in the top level was 60~7o% and that in the bottom 65~80%, exhibiting that the bottom is approximately 10% higher. Change of photosynthetic photon flux density and solar radiation both have a tendency to be similar. The wind velocities for both levels were recorded at 0.1m.s$^{-1}$ in the afternoon and 0.05m.s$^{-1}$ in the evening. The solar incident areas in the bottom level increased by approximately 25% at an East-West position and 17.7% at a South-North position, respectively.
The effect of NO$_3$-N and NH$_4$-N ratio on the growth of Perilla frutescens in deep flow culture was studied in winter season. NO$_3$-N and NH$_4$-N were treated in the ratios of 12 : 0, 9 : 3, 6 : 6(me/ $\ell$ ). The pH of the nutrient solution was increased an NO$_3$-N:NH$_4$-N=12 : 0 treatment, and decreased in the treatments containing NH$_4$-N, greatly in NO$_3$-N : NH$_4$-N = 6 : 6 treatment. The EC was increased regardless of treatments, but more increased in the treatments containing NH$_4$-N. The stem-base circumference, plant height, root weight, shoot weight, and yields of leaves were by far the highest in NO$_3$-N:NH$_4$-N=6 : 6 treatment and the lowest in NO$_3$-N:NH$_4$-N= 12 : 0 treatment. Among the mineral contents of leaves, N, K, Fe and P were higher in the treatments containing NH$_4$-N. Ca, Mg and Mn were higher in NO$_3$-N :NH$_4$-N= 12 : 0 treatment.

Sterilization is an important factor in reprocessing of drained nutrient solution (RDN). To evaluate the suitability of ozone microbubble for RDN in protected horticulture and plant factory, strong fungicidal activity of ozone and microbubble were applied. This experiment was taken advantage of ozonated water (OW) and ozone gas (OG). The Fusarium oxysporum (FO), Phytophthora capsici (PC) and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (CG) were treated with OW 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 ppm and OG $3.0g{\cdot}h^{-1}$ for 0, 30, 60, 120 and 180 sec. Results of this experiment can be summed up as follows : In the OW, FO was sterilized by 0.5 ppm in 60 sec and PC was sterilized by 2.0 ppm in 30 sec. In the OG, FO and PC both of them were sterilized in 180 sec. However, CG was not sterilized using OW and OG. Overall, ozone microbubble showed possibility of sterilization in RDN. However, CG is required to more ozone concentration and processing time.

This study was conducted to develop the disinfection system using electric shock for recycled nutrient solution in recycling soilless culture. Stainless steel (SUS 316) was found as the most appropriate electrode material for electrical disinfection system from the view of high electrical conductivity, low electric resistance, and low price. There were no changes in nutritional elements when the electric shock passed through the nutrient solution by stainless steel electrode. The amount of electric current increased with width than thickness of the electrode. The farther the distance between the electrodes was increased the time to reach out the aimed amount of current. The electric shock was applied to Ralstonia solanacearum and Fusarium oxysporum as representative bacteria and also fungi. Any of those pathogens were killed with the percentage of higher than 97% in the condition of 15VDC or 24VDC.
To develop suitable alternative substrates in hydroponics of sweet pepper, changes of water contents of substrates and electric conductivity (EC) of drainage nutrient solution, growth and fruit characteristics according to the kind of coir substrates were investigated compared with rockwool. In all coir substrates compared with rockwool during growing period, water contents were higher, EC of drainage nutrient solution except for fiber 50% were lower, and the coefficient of variation were a little, especially were so in fiber 30% of coir substrates. Plant growth in fiber 30% substrate was better than others but there was no significant difference. Photosynthesis rate and chlorophyll content were best in fiber 50% substrate. Fruit weight was no significant difference, but LID ratio and shape of the fruits were good in fiber 50% substrate and rockwool as which were close to regular square. Therefore, it was estimated that mixed coir substrates with fiber $30{\sim}50%$ are enough in possibility as alternative substrate.
The experiment has investigated the effects of growth, yield, fruit quality and cation absorption of strawberry 'Akihime' in different $NO_3-N:NH_4-N$ ratio in nutrient solution. $NO_3-N:NH_4-N$ ratios were 5.5:0, 4.0:1.5 and $3.0:2.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}$. As the ratio of $NH_4-N$ increased, pH was decreased by $5.0{\sim}6.0$ and EC sustained $0.8{\sim}1.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ during experiment. Though in high $NH_4-N$ ratio of $3.0:2.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}$, the absorption of cations(K, Ca and Mg) was not inhibited. Treatment in contained $NH_4-N$ showed a tendency of increasing of petiole length and leaf width. The fruit length, fruit width, fruit weight and soluble solids were not significantly different. Yield per plant was lowest in $4.0:1.5\;me{\cdot}L^{-1}$, of $NO_3-N:NH_4-N$ ratio. Malformation fruit has not shown during the whole growth period.
