  • The continuous release of nutrient sources into natural water resource can be a continuing problem in eutrophication, as well as severe reductions in water quality. However, any desirable measure is not developed yet even though so many researches and efforts have been done to solve this problem. Forest as one of troublesome nonpoint sources may contributes most to nutrient loading, but the loading of N and P from forest in order to grasp the eutrophication potential of nonpoint sources has not been evaluated. The nutrient sources from the organic litter accumulated on the surface of forest soils can be a critical factor in continuity of eutrophication of a lake. The decomposition rate of litter can be estimated to predict release of N and P from the forest stand. The loss rate of nitrogen is complicated but depends in part upon the physical matrix of the element. Therefore, long-term nutrient budget and flux estimates at stand would be useful tools in calculating potential nutrient fluxes into the watercourses in a sustainable way. The present investigation can give insight to the actual situation of the eutrophication potentials of forest as the practical nonpoint sources.

  • Management of renewable organic resources is important in attaining the sustainability of agricultural production. However, nutrient management with organic resources is more complex than fertilization with chemical fertilizer because the composition of the organic input or the environmental condition will influence organic matter decomposition and nutrient release. One of the most effective methods for estimating nutrient release from organic amendment is the use of N mineralization models. The present study aimed at parameterizing N mineralization models for a number of organic amendments being used as a nutrient source for crop production. Laboratory incubation experiment was conducted in aerobic condition. N mineralization was investigated for nineteen organic amendments in sandy soil and clay soil at $20^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, and $30^{\circ}C$. N mineralization was facilitated at higher temperature condition. Negative correlation was observed between mineralized N and C:N ratio of organic amendments. N mineralization process was slower in clay soil than in sandy soil and this was mainly due to the delayed nitrification. The single and the double exponential models were used to estimate N mineralization of the organic amendments. N mineralization potential $N_p$ and mineralization rate k were estimated in different temperature and soil conditions. Estimated $N_p$ ranged from 28.8 to 228.1 and k from 0.0066 to 0.6932. The double exponential model showed better prediction of N mineralization compared with the single exponential model, particularly for organic amendments with high C:N ratio. It is expected that the model parameters estimated based on the incubation experiment could be used to design nutrient management planning in environment-friendly agriculture.

  • Objective of this research was to determine the effect of application rate of a slow release fertilizer (SRF) in three root media, peatmoss+vermiculite (1:1, v/v; PV), peatmoss+composted rice hall (1:1, v/v; PR), and peatmoss+composted pine bark (1:1, v/v; PB), on growth and nutrient contents of potted chrysanthemum 'Lima Honey'. All media contained polyacrylic acid sodium salt at a rate of $4.5g L^{-1}$. The fresh and dry weights at 43 days after transplanting did not show statistical differences among treatments in each root media. Elevated application rate of SRF increased fresh and dry weights at 80 days after transplanting in PV and PB media, but not in PR medium. Elevated application rates of SRF resulted in the increase of tissue phosphorus content and decrease of tissue Ca, Na, and Zn contents at both 43 and 80 days after transplanting. Elevated application rates of SRF resulted in the decrease of pH and increase of EC and concentrations of ${NO_3}^-$ and ${P_2O_5}^{3-}$, K, Ca, and Mg in the soil solution of PV and PR media. The trends of those in PR media were also similar except ${NO_3}^-$. The differences among treatments in EC at 80 days after transplanting were less significant as compared to those at 43 days after transplanting in three media.

  • This study was accomplished to develope an advanced wastewater treatment process using high MLSS in anoxic tank aimed to improve nutrient removal and to reduce wasting sludge. It was operated with 4 Modes with varing solid concentration and internal recycle ratios. Mode I, II, III was operated 1.0~1.5% MLSS concentration at anoxic tank with 50% sludge recycle rate, however, each internal recycle rate were 100%, 200%, 300% and Mode IV was operated 1.5~2.0% MLSS concentration at anoxic tank with 50% sludge recycle rate and 100% internal recycle rate. The COD removal efficiency didn't show any big difference from Mode I to IV. The average COD removal rate was over than 90%. The T-N removal rate was 73%, the highest rate in all mode. The 36% of SCOD is used for the denitrification and phosphorus release in the anoxic tank. Specific denitrification rate was 3.5mg $NO_3{^-}-N/g$ Mv/hr and denitrification time was 0.7hr. As MLSS concentration is higher in anoxic tank as denitrification time would be shorter. The T-P removal rate was average 70%. The phosphorus release accomplished from the anoxic tank because the anaerobic condition was prevalent in the anoxic due to the prompt completion of denitrification. Sludge production was 0.28 kgVSS/kg $BOD_{removed}$ under the 1.5% MLSS and 17 day SRT. It is prominent result which has 40% sludge reduce comparing with traditional activate sludge system.

  • To predict the effects of nutrient releasing on the water quality of Namyang Reservoir, nutrient releasing rates from sediments in oxic and anoxic conditions were estimated in a small microcosm. Organics and nitrogens were not released. The releasing pattern of inorganic phosphate and total phosphorus was depend on the oxygen concentration. The releasing rate of inorganic phosphate and total phosphorus in oxic condition was $1.01\sim2.48$ and $2.14\sim3.54$ mg-P/$m^2$/day, respectively. It was high in the upstream sediments indicating the particles containing easily degradable organic compounds are flowed into the area. Because the depth of Namyang Reservoir at the downstream adjacent to the Dam is $7\sim14$ m, the condition of most area of sediment surface will be oxic. Based on these results, the appropriate counterplans are required to reduce phosphorus release in oxic conditions to control water pollution.

  • A batch and a continuous type experiments were conducted to test the conditions for simultaneous phosphorus release and uptake, and denitrification, taking place in one process. The bacteria able to denitrify as well as to remove phosphorus were evaluated for the application to biological nutrient removal(BNR) process. In the batch-type experiment, simultaneous reactions of phosphorus release and uptake, and also denitrification were observed under anoxic condition with high organic and nitrate loading. However the rate and the degree of P release were lower than that occurred under anaerobic condition. BNR processes composed of anaerobic-anoxic-oxic(AXO), anoxic-anaerobic-oxic(XAO) and anoxic-oxic(XO) were operated in continuous condition. The anoxic reactors in each process received nitrate loading. In the AXO process, P release in anaerobic reactor and the luxury uptake in oxic reactor proceeded actively regardless to nitrate loading. However in XAO and XO processes, P release and luxury uptake occurred only with the nitrate loading less than $0.07\;kg{NO_3}^--N$/kgMLSS-d. With higher nitrate load, P release increased and the luxury uptake decreased. Therefore, it appeared that the application of denitrifying phosphorus-removing bacteria (DPB) to BNR process must first resolve the problem with decrease of luxury uptake of phosphorus in oxic reactor.

  • In order to investigate the effect of internal loading from sediment on algal blooming at Chusori area in Daechung Reservoir, the amount and contamination level of sediment and the release rate of total phosphorus were analyzed. The sedimentary layer was consisted with two layers, and the average depth of upper and lower ones were 0.35 and 1.44 m, respectively. The fraction of inorganic phosphorus in the sediment was higher than that of organic phosphorus, and the fractions of phosphorus which responsible for internal loading were very high as in the range of 72.7 and 80.2% of inorganic phosphorus. The C/N ratio of sediment taken with core sampler indicated the organic compounds are originated from settled algae from water body. The average release rate of total phosphorus from sediment was $6.74({\pm}0.50)mg/m^2/day$. These results indicated that the internal loading from sediment contributes the excessive algal growth at Churosi area, and the countermeasures to improve the quality of sediments are required to manage algal blooming in Daechung Reservoir.

  • Biological nutrient removal(BNR) from wastewater was performed by adopting various process configurations. The simultaneous biological organics, phosphorus and nitrogen removal of synthetic wastewater was investigated in a sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR). The other reactor was operating as a reference, without biofilm being added. The cycling time in SBR and SBBR was adjusted at 12 hours and then certainly included anaerobic and aerobic conditions. Both systems has been operated with a stable total organic carbon(TOC), nitrogen and phosphorus removal performance for over 90 days. Average removal efficiencies of TOC and total nitrogen were 83% and 95%, respectively. The nitrification rate in SBR was higher than that in SBBR. On the contrary, the denitrification rate in SBBR was higher than that in SBR. The phosphorus release was occurred in SBBR, however, not in SBR because of the inhibition effect of NO$_3$$^{[-10]}$ .

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the possibility of nutrient release at up and downstream of Kangchun weir, upstream of Yuju and Ipo weir in Namhan River. For this survey, we measured basic characteristics of the sediments (water content, ignition loss, TOC, TP, SRP, TN, phosphorus fractionation) and conducted nutrients release experiments under both aerobic and anaerobic condition. The overlying water from the sediment-water column was analyzed for nutrients (i.e. TP, $PO_4$-P, TN, $NO_3$-N, $NH_3$-N) everyday for 18days. Result of soil texture experiment showed that sediments are Sand. SRP concentration before the release experiment was different with the value after the release experiment. According to this result, we can find that there were more activated release processes in anaerobic condition. $PO_4$-P increased from 1 to 8 days and remained at the maximum value (7~8 days) afterward. The rapidly increase of $PO_4$-P was observed from 1 to 2~3 days whereas the TP continuously increase from 1 to 18 days. The $PO_4$-P release rate calculated by up to 7~8 days data highly correlated with initial SRP concentration with $R^2$=0.8502. $NO_3$-N release rate appears constantly decreasing trend as -5.7~-3.08 $mg/m^2{\cdot}day$, otherwise the $NH_3$-N release rate, by-product of a organic matter decomposition using nitrate as electron acceptor, was 0.57~2.41 $mg/m^2{\cdot}day$. Substantial portion in TN can be induced by organic nitrogen which originated from the tributary passing through non-point pollutant source. Compared with other similar researches, phosphorus and nitrogen release rates obtained in this study can be considered as relatively low values. Since this study targeted the sediments accumulated by one time of flooding season, there are limitation to generalize theses results. Therefore, it is necessary to consistently monitor and investigate the accumulation of nutrients in the sediment for understanding the effect of weir construction on the overlying water quality.

  • The environmental characteristics in shellfish farms were investigated in the western part of Jinhae Bay, 1996. During summer, anoxia and high nutrient concentrations were found in the bottom waters of shellfish farms. The concentrations of particulate organic species in seawaters were enriched, showing an average 57.44 uM for POC, an average 5.45 uM for PON, and an average 0.42uM for PP. The sediments environment in the farms was very polluted. The concentrations of COD and AVS were more than 20 mg/g.dry and 0.5 mg/g.dry, respectively. The total sedimentation rate was high as an average $7.81g/m^2/day$ with organic matter contents of $26\%$. Oxygen consumption rate was similar to polluted area as an average of $439mg/m^2/day$. Nutrient release rates were an average of $8.25mg/m^2/day$ for nitrogen and an average of $1.38mg/m^2/day$ for phosphorous. The cluster analysis through environmental data in summer indicated that DO, nutrient in the bottom water, and AVS in the sediment were important factors to characterize the polluted environmental site.
