The family of lemnacae colloquially known as duckweed contains the world' smallest species of flowering plants (macrophytes). Aquatic and free-floating, their most striking qualities are a capacity for explosive reproduction and an almost complete lack of fibrous material. They are widely used for reducing chemical loading in facultative sewage lagoons, but their greatest potential lies in their ability to produce large quantities of protein rich biomass, suitable for feeding to a wide range of animals, including fish, poultry and cattle. Despite these qualities there are numerous impediments to these plants being incorporated into western farming systems. Large genetically determined variations in growth in response to nutrients and climate, apparent anti-nutritional factors, concerns about sequestration of heavy metals and possible transference of pathogens raise questions about the safety and usefulness of these plants. A clear understanding of how to address and overcome these impediments needs to be developed before duckweed is widely accepted for nutrient reclamation and as a source of animal feed.

Runoff, sediments and nutrient losses were studied under different patterns of paddy field management: (1) fall and spring plowing (PL); (2) fall plowing for half of plot and spring plowing (SPL); (3) no-till for fall and spring plowing (NPL) during the non-cropping period in the southern Korea. Sediment losses from PL plot were 25% more than those from NPL plot. There was significant difference in nutrient losses via runoff water and sediment according to plowing practice (P < 0.01). Losses of total-N, ammonia-N, nitrate-N, total-P from NPL plot were larger than PL and SPL plots during study period. Sediment and total-P losses from SPL plot were close to those of PL plot.

In these days, agricultural reservoirs are considered as a useful resource for recreational purposes, tour and cultural amenity for vicinity communities as well as irrigation water supply. However, many of the agricultural reservoirs are showing a eutrophic or hyper-eutrophic state and high level of organic contamination. In particular, about 44.7% of the aged agricultural reservoirs that constructed before 1945 exceed the water quality criteria for irrigational water use. In addition to external loading, internal nutrient loading from bottom sediment may play an important role in the nutrient budget of the aged reservoirs. The objectives of this study were to characterize variations of thermal structure of a shallow M reservoir (mean depth 1.7 m) and examine the potential of internal nutrient loading by continuous monitoring of vertical water temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration profiles in 2015 and 2016. The effect of internal loading on the total loading of the reservoir was evaluated by mass balance analysis. Results showed that a weak thermal stratification and a strong DO stratification were developed in the shallow M Reservoir. And, dynamic temporal variation in DO was observed at the bottom of the reservoir. Persistent hypoxic conditions (DO concentrations less than 2 mg/L) were established for 87 days and 98 days in 2015 and 2016, respectively, during the no-rainy summer periods. The DO concentrations intermittently increased during several events of atmospheric temperature drop and rainfall. According to the mass balance analysis, the amount of internal $PO_4-P$ loading from sediment to the overlying water were 37.9% and 39.7% of total loading during no-rainy season in 2015 and 2016, respectively on August when algae growth is enhanced with increasing water temperature. Consequently, supply of DO to the lower layer of the reservoir could be effective countermeasure to reduce nutrient release under the condition of persistent DO depletion in the bottom of the reservoir.
Lake Soyang, the largest man-made lake in Korea, has been experiencing water quality degradation because of excessive nutrient loads from the watershed. Objective of this paper is to describe land uses in and TP and TN loading characteristics from the lak
To quantify nutrient loading from emergent macrophytes through leaching in the littoral zones of Paldang Reservoir, we conducted incubation experiments using leaf litter of the emergent macrophyte, Zizaniz latifolia. To separate the leaching process from microbial decay, we used $HgCl_2$ to suppress microbial activity during the experiment. We measured electric conductivity, absorbance at 280nm, total nitrogen and dissolved inorganic nitrogen, total phosphorus and soluble reactive phosphorus, Na, K, Mg and Ca amounts in leaf litter and in water. In addition, we examined the effects of water temperature and ion concentrations of ambient water on the leaching process. A total of 6% of the initial ash-free dry mass of leaf litter was lost due to leaching during incubation (four days). Electric conductivity and A280 continued to increase and saturate during the incubation. To compare reaching rates of different nutrients, we fitted leaching dynamics with a hyperbolic saturation function [Y=AㆍX/(B+X)]. From these fittings, we found that ratios of leaching amounts to nutrient concentration in the litter were in the order of K > Na > Mg > P > Ca > N. Leaching from leaf litter of Z. latifolia was dependent on water temperature while it was not related with ion concentrations in the ambient water. Our results suggest that the leaching process of nutrients, especially phosphorus, from aquatic macrophytes provides considerable contribution to the eutrophication of the Paldang Reservoir ecosystem.

Biological nutrient removal(BNR) process used in this study, which was packed with EPS(expanded polystylene) media, has more many advantages in aspect of reducing hydraulic retention time(HRT) of the process and having less effect of temperature in the winter season than commercial process in the present. Bench-scale study was performed using domestic wastewater. In the results, it was observed that the T-N removal efficiencies in HRT 6 hr and HRT 4 hr were 55% and 51%, respectively, showing the small reduction (about 4%) of T-N removal efficiency according to shortening of HRT. In comparison of T-N removal characteristic in summer and winter seasons, it showed that T-N removal efficiencies in summer and winter seasons were 65% and 54%, respectively, showing the 11% lower T-N removal efficiency in winter season than in summer season due to deterioration of nitrification in winter season. In the studies of influent loading rate and C/N ratio, the process showed stable effluent quality under the condition of broad influent loading rate and C/N ratio. Therefore, it is anticipated that the developed process in this study could be applicable to small wastewater treatment plant in nutrient removal.
The comparison of water balance and nutrient loading from paddy field with different irrigation management were carried out during 1999 ${\sim}$ 2002 at two different sites; one is irrigated with groundwater and the other is irrigated with surface water. For the surface water irrigated paddy field, irrigation was performed continuously during growing season. Whereas, initial irrigation with groundwater was applied during initial growing season, and the ponded water depth was maintained by natural precipitation since initial irrigation. The runoff frequency of groundwater irrigated paddy field was less than that of surface water irrigated paddy field. The nutrient concentration of ponded water was high by fertilization at early cultural periods, so reducing surface drainage during fertilization period can reduce nutrient loading from paddy fields. Amount of irrigation water to surface water irrigated paddy field was higher than to groundwater irrigated paddy field and evapotranspiration was similar because it is influenced by climate. Overall input in and output from paddy field irrigated with goundwater were less than that with surface water. This study indicate that efficient water management can reduce surface drainage outflow, save water, and protect water quality. It might be important BMPs for paddy field.

In this study, on-site sewage treatment tests were conducted using the Absorbent Biofilter System (ABS) under different hydraulic loading rates to examine its treatment characteristics and efficiencies and to determine its feasibility as a small on-site sewage treatment system in a rural area. Results showed that the removal rates of BOD and SS were satisfactory at hydraulic loading rates of 100~150 cm/day, meeting the Korean effluent water quality standards for the riparian zone (10 mg/L). In the case of nutrients (N, P), however, the system did not perform well, necessitating further improvement for nutrient removal. A comparative analysis indicated that as a small on-site sewage treatment system, the ABS would be more suitable than other treatment systems in terms of performance stability, maintenance requirement, and cost-effectiveness and could be applied as an alternative treatment system in Korean rural areas.
This study was conducted to evaluate water quality in the Keum River estuary using principal component analysis. The results was summarized as follow; Water quality in the Keum River estuary could be explained up to 70.40% by three factors which were included in the inffluent loading by the Keum River and Kyungpo cheon(38.99%), seasonal variation and organic matter pollution(19.05%), sediment resuspension and internal metabolism(12.35%). For spatial variation of factor score, artificial pollutant loading is highest at st.1, below Keum River barrage, and decreases toward the outer sea. For annual variation of factor score, factor 1 was highly related to artificial pollutant leading, and it was gently increased in 1994. Also, organic matter pollution, sediment resuspension and internal metabolism were increased to every year. It is necessary to control the nutrient leading by Keum river and Kyongpo cheon for Water quality management of estuary.
