A review of probability density function(PDF) methodology and direct numerical simulation for the purpose of modeling turbulent combustion are presented in this study where particular attention is focused on the modeling problem of turbulent molecular mixing term appearing in PDF transport equation. Existing mixing models results were compared to those evaluated by direct numerical simulation in a turbulent premixed medium with finite rate chemistry in which the initial scalar field is composed of pockets of partially burnt gases to simulate autoignition. Two traditional mixing models, the least mean square estimations(LMSE) and Curl#s model are examined to see their prediction capability as well as their modeling approach. Test calculations report that the stochastically based Curl#s approach, though qualitatively demonstrates some unphysical behaviors, predicts scalar evolutions which are found to be in good agreement with statistical data of direct numerical simulation.

To establish initial response scenarios for nuclear accidents around the Kori nuclear power plants, the potential for radionuclide diffusion was estimated using numerical experiments and statistical techniques. This study used the numerical model WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) and FLEXPART (Flexible Particle dispersion model) to calculate the three-dimensional wind field and radionuclide dispersion, respectively. The wind patterns observed at Gijang, near the plants, and at meteorological sites in Busan, were reproduced and applied to estimates of seasonally averaged wind fields. The distribution of emitted radionuclides are strongly associated with characteristics of topography and synoptic wind patterns over nuclear power plants. Since the terrain around the power plants is complex, estimates of radionuclide distribution often produce unexpected results when wind data from different sites are used in statistical calculations. It is highly probable that in the summer and autumn, radionuclides move south-west, towards the downtown metropolitan area. This study has clear limitations in that it uses the seasonal wind field rather than the daily wind field.

Over the last two decades, numerous experimental and numerical efforts have examined physical phenomena in plasma discharge devices. The physical mechanisms that govern the anomalous electron diffusion from the cathode to the anode in the Hall Effect Thruster (HET) are not fully understood. This work used 1-D numerical method to improve our understanding and gain insight into the effect of the anomalous electron diffusion in the HET. To this end, numerical solutions are compared with various experimental HET performance measurements and the effects of anomalous electron diffusion are analyzed. The relationships between the anomalous electron diffusion and important parameters of the HET are also studied quantitatively. The work identifies the cathode mass flow rate fraction, radial magnetic field distribution, and discharge voltage as significant factors that affect anomalous electron diffusion. Additionally, the study demonstrates a computational process to determine the radial magnetic field distribution required to achieve specific thruster performance goals.
Several observational results show a tighter pitch angle at wavelengths of optical and near-infrared than those that are associated with star formation, which is in agreement with the prediction of the density wave theory. In my recent numerical studies, the dependence of the shock positions relative to the potential minima is due to the tendency that stronger shocks form farther downstream. This causes a systematic variation of the perpendicular Mach number, with radius and makes the pitch angle of the gaseous arms smaller than that of the stellar arms, which supports the prediction of the density-wave theory, independently. However, some observations still give controversial results which show similar pitch angles at wavelengths, and there is no statistical study comparing observations and numerical models directly. By analyzing optical image of disk galaxies in the Carnegie-Irvine Galaxy Survey (CGS), I measured the physical values of stellar and gaseous arms such as their strength, length, and pitch angles. For direct comparison with numerical results, I analyzed more than 30 additional numerical models with varying the initial parameters in model galaxies. In this talk, I will present results both of observational and numerical samples and discuss the physical properties of spiral structures based on the density-wave theory.
In the present study, the effect of geometrical parameters of two different types of aluminum thin-walled structures on energy absorption under three-bending impact loading has been investigated experimentally and numerically. To evaluate the effect of parameters on the specific energy absorption (SEA), initial peak crushing force (IPCF), and the maximum crushing distance (δ), a design of experiment technique (DOE) with response surface method (RSM) was applied. Four different thin-walled structures have been tested under the low-velocity impact, and then they have simulated by ABAQUS software. An acceptable consistency between the numerical and experimental results was obtained. In this study, statistical analysis has been performed on various parameters of three different types of tubes. In the first and the second statistical analysis, the dimensional parameters of the cross-section, the number of holes, and the dimensional parameter of holes were considered as the design variables. The diameter reduction rate and the number of sections with different diameters are related to the third statistical analysis. All design points of the statistical method have been simulated by the finite element package, ABAQUS/Explicit. The final result shows that the height and thickness of tubes were more effective than other geometrical parameters, and despite the fact that the deformations of the cylindrical tubes were around forty percent greater than the rectangular tubes, the top desirability was relevant to the cylindrical tubes with reduced cross-sections.
For Markov processes whose stationary probabilities are difficult to obtain in the analytical form, approximate solutions can be considered using numerical methods such as a matrix operation method or an iterative calculation method. In this paper we perform the study to verify the accuracy of a numerical iteration formula which calculate the stationary probabilities of Markov chains or processes. Especially, the convergence and accuracy of the numerical method are investigated by using Markov models for system availability. We compare the values of the system availability based on the numerical calculation and those based on the complicated but analytical solutions. We also calculate the iteration numbers necessary for the convergence of the numerical solutions. The accuracy and usefulness of the numerical iterative calculation method can be ascertained through this study.
This article presents a numerical tool for dimensioning two-threaded fasteners connecting prismatic parts subjected to fatigue tension loads that are coplanar with the screw axis. A simplified numerical model is developed from unidirectional finite elements, modeling the connected parts and screws with bent elements and the elastic contact layer between the parts with springs. An algorithm updating the contact stiffness matrix, calculating forces and displacements at each node of the structure and thus normal stresses in the screws in both static and fatigue is further developed using C language. An experimental study is also conducted in parallel with the numerical approach to validate the developed model assumptions, the numerical model and the 3D finite element results. Since stiffness values for the compressive zones in the parts are analytically difficult to determine, a statistical software method is used, from which a tuning factor is derived for identifying these stiffness values. The method is also applied to set out the influence of each parameter on the fatigue behaviour of each screw. Finally, the developed model will be used to establish a new, sophisticated, fast and accurate tool for dimensioning bolted mechanical structures.

The objective of this study is to evaluate and improve the capability of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model in simulating fog and visibility in local airports over Korea. The WRF model system is statistically evaluated for the 48-fog cases over Korea from 2003 to 2006. Based on the 4-yr evaluations, attempts are made to improve the simulation skill of fog and visibility over Korea by revising the statistical coefficients in the visibility algorithms of the WRF model. A comparison of four existing visibility algorithms in the WRF model shows that uncertainties in the visibility algorithms include additional degree of freedom in accuracy of numerical fog forecasts over Korea. A revised statistical algorithm using a linear-regression between the observed visibility and simulated hydrometeors and humidity near the surface exhibits overall improvement in the visibility forecasts.
In the view point of practical engineering the identification problem may be considered as a problem to determine the optimal model in the sense of minimizing a given criterion function using the input-output records of the plant. In the system identification the statistical approach has been known to be very effective when the topological structure of the system and the statistical characteristics of the observation noises are known a priori. But in the practical situation there are many cases when the inforhation about the observation noises or the system noises are not available a priori. Here, the authors propose a new identification method which can be used effectively even in the cases when the variances of observation noises are unknown a priori. In the method, the identification of unknown parameters of a linear diserete system is achieved by minimizing the improved quadratic criterion function which is composed of the term of square equation errors and the term to eliminate the affection of observation noises. The method also gives the estimate of noise variance. Numerical computations for several examples show that the proposed procedure gives satisfactory results even when the short time observation data are provided.

The goal of sufficient dimension reduction (SDR) is to replace original p-dimensional predictors with a lower-dimensional linearly transformed predictor. The sliced inverse regression (SIR) (Li, Journal of the American Statistical Association, 86, 316-342, 1991) is one of the most popular SDR methods because of its applicability and simple implementation in practice. However, SIR may yield different dimension reduction results for different numbers of slices and despite its popularity, is a clear deficit for SIR. To overcome this, a fused sliced inverse regression was recently proposed. The study shows that the dimension-reduced predictors is robust to the numbers of the slices, but it does not investigate how robust its dimension determination is. This paper suggests a permutation dimension determination for the fused sliced inverse regression that is compared with SIR to investigate the robustness to the numbers of slices in the dimension determination. Numerical studies confirm this and a real data example is presented.
