Structural optimization often requires the evaluation of design sensitivities. The Semi Aanalytic method(SAM) for computing sensitivity is popular in shape optimization because this method has several advantages. But when relatively large rigid body motions are identified for individual elements, the SA method shows severe inaccuracy. In this paper, the improvement of design sensitivities corresponding to the rigid body mode is evaluated by exact differentiation of the rigid body modes. Moreover, the error of the SA method caused by numerical difference scheme is alleviated by using a series approximation for the sensitivity derivatives and considering the higher order terms. Finally, this paper shows that the refined SA method including the iterative method improves the results of sensitivity analysis in dynamic problems.
A numerical method is presented for the dynamic analysis of military tracked vehicles of high mobility. To compute the impulsive dynamic contact forces which occur when a vehicle passes on a ground obstacle, the track is modeled as the combination of elastic links interconected by pin joints. The mass of each track link, the elastic elongation of a track link between pin joints by the track tension, and the elastic spring effects on the upper and lower surfaces of each track link have been considered in the equations of motion. And the chassis, torsion bar arms, and road wheels of the vehicle are modeled as the rigid multi bodies connected with kinematic constraints. The contact positions and the contact forces between the road wheels and track, and the ground and the the track are simultaneously computed with the solution of the equations of motions of the vehicle consisting of the multibodies. The iterative scheme for the solution of the multi body dynamics of the tracked vehicle is presented and the numerical simulations are conducted.
This paper is concerned with the numerical study on the resonance response of a rigid spar-type floating platform in coupled heave and pitch motion. Spar-type floating platforms, widely used for supporting the offshore structures, offer an economic advantage but those exhibit the dynamically high sensitivity to external excitations due to their shape at the same time. Hence, the investigation of their dynamic responses, particularly at resonance, is prerequisite for the design of spar-type floating platforms which secure the dynamic stability. Spar-type floating platform in 2-D surface wave is assumed to be a rigid body having 2-DOFs, and its coupled dynamic equations are analytically derived using the geometric and kinematic relations. The motion-variance of the metacentric height and the moment of inertia of floating platform are taken into consideration, and the hydrodynamic interaction between the wave and platform motions is reflected into the hydrodynamic force and moment and the frequency-dependent added masses. The coupled nonlinear equations governing the heave and pitch motions are solved by the RK4 method, and the frequency responses are obtained by the digital Fourier transform. Through the numerical experiments to the wave frequency, the resonance responses and the coupling in resonance between heave and pitch motions are investigated in time and frequency domains.
In the present work the elastic-plastic FE formulations using dynamic explicit time integration schemes are used for numerical analysis of a large auto-body panel stamping processes. For analyses of more complex cases with larger and more refined meshes, the explicit method is more time effective than implicit method, and has no convergency problem and has the robust nature of contact and friction algorithms while implicit method is widely used because of excellent accuracy and reliability. The elastic-plastic scheme is more reliable and rigorous while the rigid-plastic scheme require small computation time. In finite element simulation of auto-body panel stamping processes, the roobustness and stability of computation are important requirements since the computation time and convergency become major points of consideration besides the solution accuracy due to the complexity of geometry conditions. The performnce of the dynamic explicit algorithms are investigated by comparing the simulation results of formaing of complicate shaped autobody parts, such as a fuel tank and a rear hinge, with the experimental results. It has been shown that the proposed dynamic explicit elastic-plastic finite element method enables an effective computation for complicated auto-body panel stamping processes.
This paper is concerned with the dynamic analysis of an underwater tracked vehicle, operating on extremely soft soil of the deep-seafloor. The vehicle is assumed as a rigid-body with 6-dof. The orientation of the vehicle is defined by four Euler parameters. To solve the motion equations of the vehicle, the Newmark numerical integrator is used in the incremental-iterative algorithm. The normalization constraint of Euler parameters is satisfied by using of a sequential updating method. The hydrodynamic force and moment are included in the tracked vehicle's dynamics. The hydrodynamic effects on the performance of tracked vehicles are investigated through numerical simulations.
The pretensioner is used to retract the belt webbing and tighten up any slack in the event of a crash. The retracting force of the pretensioner helps move the passenger into the optimum crash position in his or her seat. In this paper, the new concept of an operating mechanism of the pretensioning system is presented. The internal gear design program is developed using MATLAB. Two kinds of numerical analysis model are created. The first one, the rigid body dynamic model, is used to estimate the performance of several gear pairs. The initial performance of the new operating mechanism is analyzed and the best combination of the gear pairs is selected. The second one, the structural dynamic model, is used to calculate the deformation of the gear teeth. To decrease the deformation and interference of the teeth, the shape of the gear pairs is changed.
The structural unbalance mass and laundry are the important sources of the severe vibrations of automatic washing machines. In this paper, a mathematical model is developed for the dynamic analysis of the vertical axis automatic washing machines of pulsator-type. In the model, the rigid body motion of tub assembly is represented by six degrees of freedom and the dynamics of automatic hydraulic balancer is represented by one degree of freedom. The fundamental elastic modes of the tub shell and four suspension bars are also taken into account in the mathematical model, based on analytical and experimental modal analysis results. The 12 degrees of freedom equations of motion are derived by using the Lagrange's equations and the present dynamic model is evaluated by comparing the numerical simulation results with experimentally measured data.
This paper presents the analysis results of dynamics in the billiards game within the framework of rigid-body mechanics and a numerical simulation program. The friction exists between the ball and the table bed as well as between the ball and the rail. There are three parts in the dynamic behavior of the ball on the table bed; motion of the ball on the table bed, collision between balls, and collision between the ball and the cushion. During the development of the simulation program, the dynamics problems such as rolling motion and three-dimensional frictional impact motion have been analyzed in detail. The theoretical issues are implemented into a viable graphic simulation program and its efficacy is demonstrated through the experimental validation of the billiards game. The resulting analysis results are verified quantitatively and qualitatively using high-speed video camera. Through the experimental tests, it was found that the physical parameters such as coefficients of restitution and friction vary according to the motion variables and corresponding empirical formulations were developed. The simulation and experimental results agree well.
The dynamic response characteristics of Tension Leg Platforms(TLPs) in waves are examined for presenting the basic data for design of TLPs. The numerical approach is based on a combination of the three dimensional source distribution method and the dynamic response analysis method, in which the superstructure of TLP is assumed to be flexible instead of rigid. Restoring forces by hydrostatic pressure on the submerged surface of a TLP have been accurately calculated by excluding the assumption of the slender body theory. The hydrodynamic interactions among TLP members, such as columns and pontoons, and the structural damping are included in the motion and structural analysis. Numerical results are compared with the experimental ones, which are obtained in the literature, concerning the motion and tension responses of a TLP in waves. The results of comparison confirmed the validity of the proposed approach.
In this paper, the combined system equation of motion, which can analyze the dynamic interaction between pantograph and catenary system, is derived by adopting absolute nodal coordinates and rigid body coordinates. The analysis results are compared with real experiment data from test running of Korean high-speed train (HSR 350x). In addition, a computation method for the dynamic stress of contact wire is presented using the derived system equation of motion. This method might be good example and significant in that the structural and multibody dynamics model can be unified into one numerical system.
