  • Understanding the Nano size particles is of great interest due to their chemical and physical behaviors such as compositions, size distributions, and number concentrations. Therefore, accurate measurements of size distributions and number concentrations in ultrafine particles are getting required because expected losses such as diffusion for the instrument system from ambient inlet to detector are a significant challenge. In this study, the data using the computed settling losses, impaction losses, diffusion losses for the sampling lines (explored different sampling line diameters, horizontal length, number of bending, line angles, flow rates with and without a bypass), and diffusion losses for the Scanning Mobility Particle Sizers are examined. As expected, the settling losses and impaction losses are very minor under 100 nm, however, diffusion loss corrections for the sampling lines and the size instrument make a large difference for any measurement conditions with high numbers of particles smaller mobility size. Both with and without the loss corrections, which can affect to size distributions and number concentrations are described. First, 80% or more of the smallest particles (less than 10 nm) can be lost in the condition of a flow rate of 0.3 liter per minute and the length of sampling line of 1.0 m, second, total number concentrations of measurements are quite significantly affected, and the mode structure of the size distribution changes dramatically after the loss corrections applied. With compared to the different measurements, statistically diffusion loss corrections yield a required process of the ambient particle concentrations. Based on the current study, as an implication, a possibility of establishing direct revelation mechanisms is suggested.

  • The objectives of this study were to quantify the combination values of the principal components and factors calculated using body measurements of Hanwoo (Korean Cattle) and estimate their heritabilities. The technique of multivariate analysis was used to reduce a large number of variables to a smaller number of new variables and characterize cattle according to body shape. The analyses were performed using 1,979 cattle at 12 months of age and 936 cattle at 24 months of age. The data for the analyses was obtained from progeny tests performed on Korean Cattle for 6 years from 2003 to 2008. The phenotypic correlations among these traits were estimated to range from 0.32 to 0.90 at 12 months of age and from 0.21 to 0.82 at 24 months of age. The first principal components (PC1s) indicated a weighed average of overall body measurements, accounting for 99.91% of the total variation for both periods of test. The two first PCs had positive coefficients for all body measurements. The major sources of PC, such as chest girth (CG), body length (BL), rump height (RH), and wither height (WH) were similar for both test periods. The heritabilities for PC1, the first factor score (FS1), and the second factor score (FS2) were estimated by multivariate REML method. The estimated heritabilities for PC1, FS1, and FS2 were 0.33, 0.38, and 0.40, respectively, at 12 months of age and 0.26, 0.76, and 0.58 at 24 months of age. Further studies are needed to determine whether the heritabilities of FS1 and FS2 at 24 months of age were overestimated.

  • A method is presented to find the location and magnitude of damage in a structure using data from dynamic tests. The test data include a combination of natural frequency measurements, taken before and after the occurrence of damage, and response measurements taken after damage. An algorithm is developed to identify localized increases in the flexibility of the structural members. Increases in flexibility are attributed to damage. The algorithm uses the sensitivity of the flexibility matrix to changes in the natural frequencies of the structure to identify the damage. A set of under determined equations is solved using an objective function which is derived from measurements of the system moments. Damage ranging from 10 to 60% increase in the flexibility of a member was successfully identified in a 50 d.o.f. structure, using a small number of natural frequency and velocity measurements.

  • Soil $CO_2$ efflux can vary markedly in magnitude over both time and space, and understanding this variation is crucial for the correct measurement of $CO_2$ efflux in ecological studies. Although considerable research has quantified temporal variability in this flux, comparatively little effort has focused on its spatial variability. To account for spatial heterogeneity, we must be able to determine the number of sampling points required to adequately estimate soil $CO_2$ efflux in a target ecosystem. In this paper, we report the results of a study of the number of sampling points required for estimating soil $CO_2$ efflux using a closed-dynamic chamber in young and old Japanese cedar plantations in central Japan. The spatial heterogeneity in soil $CO_2$ efflux was significantly higher in the mature plantation than in the young stand. In the young plantation, 95% of samples of 9 randomly-chosen flux measurements from a population of 16 measurements made using 72-$cm^2$ chambers produced flux estimates within 20% of the full-population mean. In the mature plantation, 20 sampling points are required to achieve means within $\pm$ 20% of the full-population mean (15 measurements) for 95% of the sample dates. Variation in soil temperature and moisture could not explain the observed spatial variation in soil $CO_2$ efflux, even though both parameters are a good predictor of temporal variation in $CO_2$ efflux. Our results and those of previous studies suggest that, on average, approximately 46 sampling points are required to estimate the mean and variance of soil $CO_2$ flux in temperate and boreal forests to a precision of $\pm$ 10% at the 95% confidence level, and 12 points are required to achieve a precision of $\pm$ 20%.

  • In this paper, a novel PARAllel FACtor (PARAFAC) decomposition based Blind Source Separation (BSS) algorithm is proposed for modal identification of structures equipped with tuned mass dampers. Tuned mass dampers (TMDs) are extremely effective vibration absorbers in tall flexible structures, but prone to get de-tuned due to accidental changes in structural properties, alteration in operating conditions, and incorrect design forecasts. Presence of closely spaced modes in structures coupled with TMDs renders output-only modal identification difficult. Over the last decade, second-order BSS algorithms have shown significant promise in the area of ambient modal identification. These methods employ joint diagonalization of covariance matrices of measurements to estimate the mixing matrix (mode shape coefficients) and sources (modal responses). Recently, PARAFAC BSS model has evolved as a powerful multi-linear algebra tool for decomposing an $n^{th}$ order tensor into a number of rank-1 tensors. This method is utilized in the context of modal identification in the present study. Covariance matrices of measurements at several lags are used to form a $3^{rd}$ order tensor and then PARAFAC decomposition is employed to obtain the desired number of components, comprising of modal responses and the mixing matrix. The strong uniqueness properties of PARAFAC models enable direct source separation with fine spectral resolution even in cases where the number of sensor observations is less compared to the number of target modes, i.e., the underdetermined case. This capability is exploited to separate closely spaced modes of the TMDs using partial measurements, and subsequently to estimate modal parameters. The proposed method is validated using extensive numerical studies comprising of multi-degree-of-freedom simulation models equipped with TMDs, as well as with an experimental set-up.

  • We experimentally investigate the high-Reynolds flow around a rectangular cylinder of aspect ratio 5:1. This configuration is the object of the international BARC benchmark. Wind tunnel tests have been carried out for the flow at zero angle of attack and a Reynolds number, based on the crossflow cylinder length and on the freestream velocity, equal, to 40 000. Velocity measurements are obtained by using hot-wire anemometry along 50 different cross-flow traverses on the cylinder side and in the near wake. Differential pressure measurements are acquired on multiple streamwise sections of the model. The obtained measurements are in a good agreement with the state-of-the-art experiments. For the first time among the several contributions to the BARC benchmark, detailed flow measurements are acquired in the region near the cylinder side and in the near-wake flow. The edges and the thickness of the shear layers detaching from the upstream edges are derived from velocity measurements. Furthermore, we compute the flow frequencies characterizing the roll-up of the shear layers, the evolution of vortical structures near the cylinder side and the vortex shedding in the wake.

  • It is necessary to diagnose accurately the characteristics of soot formation and oxidation in a diesel engine. Whereas past measurement techniques for soot concentration give limited information for soot, laser-based two-dimensional imaging diagnostics have a potential to provide temporally and spatially superior resolved measurements of the soot distribution. The technique using laser sheet beam has been applied to an optically accessible diesel engine for the quantitative measurement of soot. The results provided the information for reduction of soot from the diesel engine. Both LIS (Laser Induced Scattering) and LII (Laser Induced Incandescence) techniques were used simultaneously in this study. The images of LIS and LII showed the quantitative distribution of the soot concentration in the diesel engine. In this study, several results were obtained by the simultaneous measurements of LIS and LII technique. The diameter and number density of soot in combustion chamber of the test engine were obtained from ATDC 20 degree to 110 degree. The soot diameter increased about 37% between ATDC 20 degree and 110 degree. The number density of soot, however, decreased significantly between ATDC 40 degree and 70 degree.

  • In this work, we address the so-called sensor reachback problem for Wireless Sensor Networks, which consists in collecting the measurements acquired by a large number of sensor nodes into a sink node which has major computational and power capabilities. Focused on applications such as Structural Health Monitoring, we propose a cooperative communication protocol that exploits the spatio-temporal correlations of the sensor measurements in order to save energy when transmitting the information to the sink node in a non-stationary environment. In addition to cooperative communications, the protocol is based on two well-studied adaptive filtering techniques, Least Mean Squares and Recursive Least Squares, which trade off computational complexity and reduction in the number of transmissions to the sink node. Finally, experiments with real acceleration measurements, obtained from the Canton Tower in China, are included to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
