  • It is very important to predict and analyze the change of voltage and current distribution of current strap, abnormal voltage distribution of transmission line and resonance phenomenon by coupling between current straps for more stable operation of ICRF system. In this study, to understand those phenomena by coupling, 8-port coupled transmission line model is completed by appling S-parameter measured in the prototype KSTAR ICRF antenna to the model. The determined self-inductance, mutual-inductance and capacitance of antenna straps are shown to be lower than that calculated from 2D approximate model due to finite length of strap. The coupled transmission line model of current strap will be utilized to the operation of ICRF system of KSTAR in the future.

  • In order to meet the energy demand, energy production must be done continuously. Hydrogen seems to be the best alternative for this energy production, because it is both an environmentally friendly and renewable energy source. In this study, the hydrogen fuel production of the peaceful nuclear explosives (PACER) fusion blanket as the energy source integrated with Fe-Cl thermochemical water splitting cycle have been investigated. Firstly, neutronic analyzes of the PACER fusion blanket were performed. Necessary neutronic studies were performed in the Monte Carlo calculation method. Molten salt fuel has been considered mole-fractions of heavy metal salt (ThF4, UF4 and ThF4+UF4) by 2, 6 and 12 mol. % with Flibe as the main constituent. Secondly, potential of the hydrogen fuel production as a result of the neutronic evaluations of the PACER fusion blanket integrated with Fe-Cl thermochemical cycle have been performed. In these calculations, tritium breeding (TBR), energy multiplication factor (M), thermal power ratio (1 - 𝜓), total thermal power (Phpf) and mass flow rate of hydrogen (ṁH2) have been computed. As a results, the amount of the hydrogen production (ṁH2) have been obtained in the range of 232.24x106 kg/year and 345.79 x106 kg/year for the all mole-fractions of heavy metal salts using in the blanket.

  • Receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand (RANKL) is a critical factor in osteoclastogenesis. It makes osteoclasts differentiate and multinucleate in bone remodeling. In the present study, RANKL was expressed as a soluble maltose binding protein (MBP)-fusion protein using the Escherichia coli maltose binding domain tag system (pMAL) expression vector system. The host cell E. coli DH5α was cultured and induced by isopropyl β-D-1-thiogalactopyranoside for rRANKL expression. Cells were disrupted by sonication to collect soluble MBP-fused rRANKL. The MBP-fusion rRANKL was purified with MBP Trap affinity chromatography and treated with Tobacco Etch Virus nuclear inclusion endopeptidase (TEV protease) to remove the MBP fusion protein. Dialysis was then carried out to remove binding maltose from the cleaved rRANKL solution. The cleaved rRANKL was purified with a second MBP Trap affinity chromatography to separate unsevered MBP-fusion rRANKL and cleaved MBP fusion protein. The purified rRANKL was shown to have biological activity by performing in vitro cell tests. In conclusion, biologically active rRANKL was successfully purified by a simple two-step chromatography purification process with one column.

  • We have now constructed a novel recombinant baculovirus producing fusion protein with Autogrqha c.uliforrzica nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcNPV) polyhedrin and green fluorescent protein (GFP). The fusion protein expressed by the recombinant baculovirus in insect cells was characterized. The GFP gene was introduced under the control of polyhedrin gene promoter of AcNPV, by fusion in the front or back of intact polyhedrin gene. The recombinant baculoviruses were named as Ac-GFPPOL or Ac-POLGFP. respectively. As expected, the 56 kDa fusion protein was expressed in the recombinant virus-infected cells. Interestingly. however, the fluorescence of GFP in the cells infected with Ac- POLGFP was only detected within the nuclei. and that was observed as polyhedra-like granular particles. In the microscopy of cells infected with Ac-GFPPOL, furthermore, GFP was detected in both cytoplasm and nuclei although most of GFP were present within the nuclei. However, fusion protein produced by recombinant virus did not form polyhedra although the fusion protein was fused with polyhedrin and GFP. It is suggested that difference of GFP location in the infected cells appear to be involved in the region of polyhedrin in the fusion protein, and the polyhedrin in the fusion protein might be responsible for the polyhedra-like granular particles present within nuclei.

  • This paper reviews cooling aspects of the diverter system in Tokamak fusion devices with primary emphasis on the critical heat flux (CHF) issues for oater-cooled designs. General characteristics of four (4) coolant options for diverter cooling gases, oater, liquid metal, and organic liquid - are discussed first, focusing on the comparison of advantages and disadvantages of those options. Then results of recent studies on the high-heat-flux CHF of water at subcooled high-velocity conditions are reviewed to provide a general idea on the feasibility of the water-cooled diverter concept for future Tokamak fusion reactors. Water is assessed to be the most viable and practical coolant option for diverters of future experimental Tokamaks.

  • The ion sources for induction linac driven heavy ion fusion were fabricated and their omittance characteristics were investigated. For to kinds of ion sources, i. e. a carbon vacuum arc ion source and a cusp field rf ion source, the emittance was measured with a double slit beam scanner. The required normalized omittance of an ion source for heavy ion fusion is 10$^{-7}$ - 5$\times$10$^{-7}$ $\pi$ m-rod, and the measured emittances of the ion beams from carbon vacuum arc ion source and cusp field rf ion source (Ne$^{+}$) were 2$\times$10$^{-6}$ $\pi$ m-rad and 4$\times$10$^{-7}$ $\pi$ m-rad, respectively.y.

  • With the use of the significant structure theory of liquid, the fusion criteria has been successfully explained. To test the theory of fusion, the excess volume upon melting has been calculated for some liquids such as simple liquids and fused salts. The results obtained show good agreements between theory and experiment. The theoretical study on the fused salt may be useful to understand the properties and structure of high temperature liquids in the atomic reactor.

  • The laser transport system of the high power laser facility is mainly composed of large-aperture laser transport mirrors (TMs). Obtaining the high-resolution online damage images during the operation, which is of great significance for operating safely of the mirrors and the facility. Based on wavefront coding, pan-tilt scanning and image stitching technologies, an online laser-damage images detection system is designed, and it can achieve high-precision detection of surface characteristics of large-aperture laser transport mirrors. The preliminary simulation proves that the system can solve the depth of field matching problem caused by pan-tilt tilt imaging and achieve higher resolution.

  • Laminated glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) composites were applied to an insulating structure of a magnet system for a nuclear fusion device. Decreased inter-laminar strength by a strong repulsive force between coils which is induced a problem of structural integrity in laminated GFRPs. Therefore, it is important to investigate the inter-laminar characteristics of laminated GFRP composites in order to assure more reliable design and better structural integrity. Three types of the laminated GFRP composites using a high voltage insulating materials were fabricated according to each molding process. To evaluate the grade of the fabricated composites, mechanical tests, such as hardness, tensile and compressive tests, were carried out. The autoclave molding composites satisfied almost of the mechanical properties reguested at the G10 class standard, but the vacuum impregnation (VPI) and Prepreg composites did not.
