  • In order to meet stringent future emission regulations, especially to reduce Particulate Matter (PM) and NOX, stoichiometric diesel combustion technology with a piezo group-hole nozzle injector is being researched for reduction harmful emissions. A new nozzle layout, namely a group-hole nozzle, which has one group of small orifices with a wide spray included angle was investigated to improve the efficiency of stoichiometric diesel combustion. From this point of view, the group-hole nozzle suggested by Dense Co. is an attractive candidate method applicable to stoichiometric diesel combustion. The group-hole nozzle concept is to reduce the injector nozzle hole diameters without sacrificing spray penetration by closely locating two holes. Experimental studies have proven that the spray from group-hole nozzles have similar spray penetration to that of a single hole with equivalent overall nozzle hole area, but the spray drop sizes (SMD) are reduced, aiding vaporization and mixing.

  • DME spray characteristics were investigated about varied ambient pressure and fuel injection pressure using the DME common rail fuel injection system when the nozzle holes diameter is varied. The common rail fuel injection system with DME cooling system was used since DME has properties of compressibility and vaporization in atmospheric temperature. The fuel injection quantity and spray characteristics were measured. The spray analysis parameters were spray shape, penetration length, and spray angle at six nozzle holes. Three types of injector were used, the nozzle holes diameter were 0.166 mm (Injector 1), 0.250 mm (Injector 2), and 0.250 mm with enlargement of orifice hole from 0.6 mm to 1.0 mm (Injector 3). The fuel injection pressure was varied by 5MPa from 35 to 70MPa when the ambient pressure was varied 0, 2.5, and 5MPa. When using Injector 3 in comparison to the others, the DME injection quantity was increased 1.69 ~ 2.02 times. Through this, it had the similar low heat value with diesel which was injected Injector 1. Among three types of injector, Injector 3 had the fastest development velocity of penetration length. In case of spray angle, Injector 2 had the largest spray angle. Through these results, only the way enlargement the nozzle holes diameter is not the solution of DME low heat value problem.

  • An object of this study is to understand the correlation of injection characteristics and injector dimensions according to biodiesel mixture. The Injection characteristics of different types of common-rail injectors are the number of nozzle holes (5~8), jet cone angle ($146^{\circ}{\sim}153^{\circ}$), hydraulic flow rate (830~900 ml/min) injection quantity and response time. Prior to characteristic experiment, the reference injector has been selected in 6 candidates injectors under the investigation of injected quantity according to the biodiesel mixture so that injector type can be determined. The injector is used for the characteristic experiment which varied the various operating conditions including pressure 23 MPa, 80 MPa, 160 MPa, changing in injection duration 0.16 ms~1.2 ms and even mixture ratio. The result shows that the nozzle hole number and cone angle influence the injection quantity much more than nozzle hole diameter at low injection pressure and the nozzle hole diameter at high injection pressure, post injection duration.

  • Macroscopic visualization of non-evaporating sprays was experimentally conducted to investigate spray tip penetration and spray angle under low-density conditions, corresponding to an early injection strategy. Furthermore, injectors with varying injection angles (146° and 70°) and numbers of holes (8 and 14) were employed to examine the impact of injector configuration. Compared to the baseline injector, 8H146, which has 8 holes and a 146° injection angle, the spray tip penetration of the 8H70 injector was found to be longer. This can be attributed to higher momentum due to a smooth flow field between the sac volume and the nozzle inlet, which is located closer to the injector tip centerline. The increase in velocity led to intense turbulence generation, resulting in a wider spray angle. Conversely, the spray tip penetration of the 14H70 injector was shorter than that of the 8H70 injector. The competition between increased velocity and decreased nozzle diameter influenced the spray tip penetration for the 14H70 injector; the increase in momentum, previously observed for the 8H70 injector, contributed to an increase in spray tip penetration, but a decrease in nozzle diameter could lead to a reduction in spray tip penetration. The spray angle for the 14H70 injector was similar to that of the 8H146 injector. Moreover, injection rate measurements revealed that the slope for a narrow injection angle (70°) was steeper than that for a wider injection angle during the injection event.

  • The injection nozzle of an electro-hydraulic injector is being opened and closed by movement of a injector's needle which is balanced by pressure at the nozzle seat and at the needle control chamber, at the opposite end of the needle. In this study, the effects of needle movement in a piezo-driven injector on unsteady cavitating flows behavior inside nozzle were investigated by cavitation numerical model based on the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. Aimed at simulating the 3-D two-phase flow behavior, the three dimensional geometry model along the central cross-section regarding of one injection hole with real design data of a piezo-driven diesel injector has been used to simulate the cavitating flows for injection time by at fully transient simulation with cavitation model. The cavitation model incorporates many of the fundamental physical processes assumed to take place in cavitating flows. The simulations performed were both fully transient and 'pseudo' steady state, even if under steady state boundary conditions. As this research results, we found that it could analyze the effect the pressure drop to the sudden acceleration of fuel, which is due to the fastest response of needle, on the degree of cavitation existed in piezo-driven injector nozzle.

  • The governing equations for high-speed lateral atomizing injector nozzle flow based on the LES-VOF model in conjunction with the CSF model are presented, and then an integrated parallel computation are performed to clarify the detailed atomization process of a high speed nozzle flow and to acquire data which is difficult to confirm by experiment such as atomization length, liquid core shapes, droplets size distributions, spray angle and droplets velocity profiles. According to the present analysis, it is found that the atomization rate and the droplets-gas two-phase flow characteristics are controlled by the turbulence perturbation upstream of the injector nozzle, hydrodynamic instabilities at the gas-liquid interface, shear stresses between liquid core and periphery of the jet. Furthermore, stable and a high-resolution computation can be attained in the high density ratio (pl/ pg = 554) conditions conditions by using our numerical method.

  • The liquid phase LPG injection (LPLI) system (the third generation technology) has been considered as one of the next generation fuel supply systems for LPG vehicles, since it has a very strong potential to accomplish the higher power, higher efficiency, and lower emission characteristics than the mixer type(the second generation technology) fuel supply system However. when a liquid LPG fuel is injected into the inlet duct of an engine, a large quantity of heat is extracted due to evaporation of fuel. This leads to freezing of the moisture in the air around the outlet of a nozzle, which is called icing phenomenon. It may cause damage to the outlet nozzle of an injector or inlet valve seat. In this work, the experimental investigation of the icing phenomenon was carried out The results showed that the icing phenomenon and process were mainly affected by humidity of inlet air instead of air temperature in the inlet duel. Also, it was observed that the total ice formed around the nozzle weighs at about $150mg{\sim}260mg$ after injection for ten minutes. And some fuel species were found in the ice attached at the front side of a nozzle, while frozen ice attached at the back of a nozzle was mostly' consisted of moisture of inlet air. Therefore, some frozen ice deposit. detached from front nozzle of an injector, may cause a problem of unfavorable air fuel ratio control in the small LPLI engine.

  • A single spray plume is the basic unit of the entire spray plume and is an important factor in understanding the spray characteristics. However, since the multi-hole GDI injector has a narrow spray angle, the superposition of the spray plumes occurs severely. Therefore, the spray uniformity and the spray atomization characteristics of a single spray plume were analyzed in this study using a single-hole GDI injector. Five single-hole GDI injectors with different nozzle hole diameters were used in the experiment. The uniformity of the spray was evaluated through the analysis of the spray pattern images. In addition, the atomization characteristics were compared using the diameter distribution of the spray droplets obtained using PDPA. As a result, the larger diameter of the nozzle hole, the less uniformity of the spray, and the injection pressure did not have a significant effect on the spray uniformity. It is judged that the surface roughness of the injector has a greater effect on spray uniformity than the diameter of the nozzle hole. Also, the size of the spray droplets increased sharply when the diameter of the nozzle hole was 230 ㎛.
