Seasonal species composition and biomass of microphytobenthos were examined at the intertidal flats of Jinsanri, Taean, Korea, from April to December 2011. In total, 121 species were identified, including 109 diatoms, 5 blue-green algae, and 5 dinoflagellates. Seasonal variation in species number ranged from 49 to 56 species (minimum in October and maximal in April), while vertical variation across three different shore levels ranged from 64 to 77 species with maximum at high and minimum at low shore. Species diversity ranged from 3.22 to 3.42 seasonally and from 3.50 to 3.17 across vertical shore levels. Seasonal average values of the normalized difference vegetation index and the vegetation index were 0.06 and 1.14, respectively. Chlorophyll a concentrations were $66.00-120.73mg/m^2$, with a seasonal minimum and maximum in July and October, respectively, and a vertical shore maximum of $137.35mg/m^2$ at mid shore. Phaeopigment concentrations peaked in October ($50.78mg/m^2$) and at high shore ($61.58mg/m^2$) and were lowest in December ($22.53mg/m^2$) and at low shore ($15.28mg/m^2$). The number of microphytobenthos ranged from 78,556 to 287,898 cells/$cm^2$, reaching a maximum in April and a minimum in July. The diatoms Paralia sulcata, Navicula sp., and Delphines surirella were dominant at all tidal levels over the study period. Dinoflagellates were dominant in July at low shore, and blue-green algae were abundant between July and October at mid shore. In conclusion, species composition and primary production of microphytobenthos exhibited clear seasonal and vertical patterns.

A research on extracting croplands located nearby coastal areas using the spatial information data sets is the important task for managing the agricultural products in coastal areas. This research aims to extract the various croplands(croplands on mountains and croplands on plain areas) located nearby coastal areas using the KOMPSAT-2 imagery, the high-resolution satellite imagery, and the airborne topographic LiDAR(Light Detection And Ranging) data acquired in coastal areas of Uljin, Korea. Firstly, the NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) imagery is generated from the KOMPSAT-2 imagery, and the vegetation areas are extracted from the NDVI imagery by using the appropriate threshold. Then, the DSM(Digital Surface Model) and DEM(Digital Elevation Model) are generated from the LiDAR data by using interpolation method, and the CHM(Canopy Height Model) is generated using the differences of the pixel values of the DSM and DEM. Then the plain areas are extracted from the CHM by using the appropriate threshold. The low slope areas are also extracted from the slope map generated using the pixel values of the DEM. Finally, the areas of intersection of the vegetation areas, the plain areas and the low slope areas are extracted with the areas higher than the threshold and they are defined as the croplands located nearby coastal areas. The statistical results show that 85% of the croplands on plain areas and 15% of the croplands on mountains located nearby coastal areas are extracted by using the proposed methodology.
Using multi-temporal KOMPSAT-3/3A high-resolution satellite images, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for the area around the Fukushima daiichi nuclear power plant was determined, and the pattern of vegetation changes was analyzed. To calculate the NDVI, surface reflectance from the KOMPSAT-3/3A satellite image was used. Satellite images from four years were used, and the zones where the images overlap was designated as the area of interest (AOI) for the study, and by setting a profile passing through highly vegetated area as a data analysis method, the changes by year were examined. In addition, random points were extracted within the AOI and displayed as a box plot to quantitatively indicate change of NDVI distribution pattern. The main results of this study showed that the NDVI in 2014 was low within AOI in the vicinity of the nuclear power plant, but vegetated area continued to expand until 2021. These results were also confirmed in the change monitoring results shown in a profile or box plot. In disaster areas where access is restricted, such as the Fukushima nuclear power plant area, where it is difficult to collect field data, obtaining land cover classification products with high accuracy using satellite images is challenging, so it is appropriate to analyze them using primary outputs such as vegetation indices obtained from high-resolution satellite imagery. It is necessary to establish an international cooperation system for jointly utilizing satellite images. Meanwhile, to periodically monitor environmental changes in neighboring countries that may affect the Korean peninsula, it is necessary to establish utilization models and systems using high-resolution satellite images.
The objectives of this study are to analyze the changes of geo-surface topography in the Siwha embankment and the Ahsan city area by the image processing of Landsat Thematic Mapper data, and to estimate the reclaimed amount of the exposed tidal flat in the Siwha area using the GIS. False color composite, Tasseled cap, NVDI(normalized difference vegetation index), and supervised classification techniques were used to analyze the distribution of sediments and the aspect of topographical variations caused by artificial human actions. The total amount of the exposed tidal flat was estimated on the basis of the database snch as aerial photography, hydrographic chart, geological map, and scheme drawing in the Siwha area. The possible excavation regions for a seawall were predicted analyzing the supervised classification image of Landsat TM data. Tasseled cap images were used to observe the distribution of sediments. The difference of the NDVI images between spring and summer seasons indicates that deciduous and coniferous forests were distributed over the whole areas. The total fill-volume of the exposed Siwha tidal flat and the fill-volume of the construction planning seawall were calculated as $581,485,354\textrm{m}^3{\;}and{\;}3,387,360\textrm{m}^3$, respectively, from the digital terrain analysis. Daebu Island, Sunkam Island, and the part of Songsan-myeon were chosen as the cut area to make the seawall, and their cut-volumes were estimated as $5,229,576\textrm{m}^3,{\;}79,227,072\textrm{m}^3,{\;}and{\;}47,026,008\textrm{m}^3$, respectively. Therefore, the cut-volume of Daebu Island alone among three areas was sufficient to make the seawall.
This study was performed to investigate the effect of foliar feeding as the fertilization on creeping benrgrass green. Research results have showed that the visual quality of bentgrass as well as shoot density and chlorophyll index dramatically improved after foliar feeding. Shoot density of bent grass in foliar based fertilization was 2.8 ea/$cm^2$ higher than that of the liquid based fertilization during the experiment period, moreover that the foliar feeding is more effective to alleviate shoot density during the rainy season in summer. Results showed that foliar feeding was key role to achieve the stable visual quality, chlorophyll index and maintained Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) throughout the year in addition to get fast recovery after aeration and dry spot. These were consistent with the previous research of foliar feeding which directly provided nutrient to the turfgrass leaf thus increased turfgrass growth within a short time. It is projected to be a especially adequate management program during the hot summer season in which the nutrition feeding is low. However, root growth was no significant difference between foliar based fertilization and liquid based fertilization. Golf Course managers also should consider about the number of frequent fertilizing. Lastly, it was no big change in chemical property by soil foliar based fertilization which is meaning of preventing the soil salinization, meanwhile, it is prone to reach the nutrient deficiency. It hopes to be settled as the general fertilization in golf course of Korea, since there are many advantages of foliar based fertilization program. It is suggested to study more practical process of foliar feeding through the further research.
A comparison of the three land cover data sets (United States Geological Survey: USGS, International Geosphere Biosphere Programme: IGBP, and University of Maryland: UMd), derived from 1992-1993 Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer(AVHRR) data sets, was performed over the Asian continent. Preprocesses such as the unification of map projection and land cover definition, were applied for the comparison of the three different land cover data sets. Overall, the agreement among the three land cover data sets was relatively high for the land covers which have a distinct phenology, such as urban, open shrubland, mixed forest, and bare ground (>45%). The ratios of triple agreement (TA), couple agreement (CA) and total disagreement (TD) among the three land cover data sets are 30.99%, 57.89% and 8.91%, respectively. The agreement ratio between USGS and IGBP is much greater (about 80%) than that (about 32%) between USGS and UMd (or IGBP and UMd). The main reasons for the relatively low agreement among the three land cover data sets are differences in 1) the number of land cover categories, 2) the basic input data sets used for the classification, 3) classification (or clustering) methodologies, and 4) level of preprocessing. The number of categories for the USGS, IGBP and UMd are 24, 17 and 14, respectively. USGS and IGBP used only the 12 monthly normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), whereas UMd used the 12 monthly NDVI and other 29 auxiliary data derived from AVHRR 5 channels. USGS and IGBP used unsupervised clustering method, whereas UMd used the supervised technique, decision tree using the ground truth data derived from the high resolution Landsat data. The insufficient preprocessing in USGS and IGBP compared to the UMd resulted in the spatial discontinuity and misclassification.

A crop information system can provide information regarding crop distribution, crop growth conditions, crop yield in various forms such as monitoring, forecasting, estimation or analysis. This paper presents the design and construction of a crop information system based on data collected in Korea, USA, and China. Therein, climate data including temperature, precipitation, solar radiation are used to evaluate the impact on crop growth, NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) data is used in crop monitoring, and crop map data is utilized for the management of crop distribution. The system has achieved three prominent results: 1) Providing information with high frequency, 2) Automatically creating the report through the analysis of the data, 3) The users to easily approach the system and retrieve the information.
In this paper, we propose the use of hierarchical classification for winter crop mapping based on satellite imagery. A hierarchical classification is a classifier that maps input data into defined subsumptive output categories. This classification method can reduce mixed pixel effects and improve classification performance. The methodology are illustrated focus on winter cropsin Gimje city, Jeonbuk with Landsat-8 imagery. First, agriculture fields were extracted from Landsat-8 imagery using Smart Farm Map. And then winter crop fields were extracted from agriculture fields using temporal Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Finally, winter crop fields were then classified into wheat, barley, IRG, whole crop barley and mixed crop fields using signature from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The results indicate that hierarchical classifier could effectively identify winter crop fields with an overall classification accuracy of 98.99%. Thus, it is expected that the proposed classification method would be effectively used for crop mapping.

The problem of the population number of honeybees that is decreasing not only domestically but also globally, has a great influence on human beings and the entire ecosystem. The habitat of honeybees is recognized to be superior in urban environment rather than rural environment, and predicting for habitat assessment and conservation is necessary. Based on this, we targeted Cheonan City and neighboring administrative areas where the distribution of agricultural areas, urban areas, and forest areas is displayed equally. In order to predict the habitat preferred by honeybees, we apply the Maxent model what based on the presence information of the species. We also selected 10 environmental variables expected to influence honeybees habitat environment through literature survey. As a result of constructing the species distribution model using the Maxent model, 71.7% of the training data were shown on the AUC(Area Under Cover) basis, and it was be confirmed with an area of 20.73% in the whole target area, based on the 50% probability of presence of honeybees. It was confirmed that the contribution of the variable has influence on land covering, distance from the forest, altitude, aspect. Based on this, the possibility of honeybee's habitat characteristics were confirmed to be higher in wetland environment, in agricultural land, close to forest and lower elevation, southeast and west. The prediction of these habitat environments has significance as a lead research that presents the habitat of honeybees with high conservation value of ecosystems in terms of urban space, and it will be useful for future urban park planning and conservation area selection.
A Land cover map over East Asian region (Kongju national university Land Cover map: KLC) is classified by using support vector machine (SVM) and evaluated with ground truth data. The basic input data are the recent three years (2006-2008) of MODIS (MODerate Imaging Spectriradiometer) NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) data. The spatial resolution and temporal frequency of MODIS NDVI are 1km and 16 days, respectively. To minimize the number of cloud contaminated pixels in the MODIS NDVI data, the maximum value composite is applied to the 16 days data. And correction of cloud contaminated pixels based on the spatiotemporal continuity assumption are applied to the monthly NDVI data. To reduce the dataset and improve the classification quality, 9 phenological data, such as, NDVI maximum, amplitude, average, and others, derived from the corrected monthly NDVI data. The 3 types of land cover maps (International Geosphere Biosphere Programme: IGBP, University of Maryland: UMd, and MODIS) were used to build up a "quasi" ground truth data set, which were composed of pixels where the three land cover maps classified as the same land cover type. The classification results show that the fractions of broadleaf trees and grasslands are greater, but those of the croplands and needleleaf trees are smaller compared to those of the IGBP or UMd. The validation results using in-situ observation database show that the percentages of pixels in agreement with the observations are 80%, 77%, 63%, 57% in MODIS, KLC, IGBP, UMd land cover data, respectively. The significant differences in land cover types among the MODIS, IGBP, UMd and KLC are mainly occurred at the southern China and Manchuria, where most of pixels are contaminated by cloud and snow during summer and winter, respectively. It shows that the quality of raw data is one of the most important factors in land cover classification.
