  • Self-injurious behavior is defined as deliberate harm to one's own body without suicidal intent. It usually occurs as head banging or hitting, skin cutting, or finger biting and includes ocular, genital and oral self-mutilation. Lesch-Nyhan syndrome is a rare X-linked recessively inherited disorder, caused by complete absence of hypoxanthin-guanine phosphoribosyl transferase(HPRT) activity. Clinical presentation is characterized by mental retardation, chorea, athetosis, hyperuricemia, uricosuria and self-mutilating behavior. In these patients, the most typical feature is loss of tissue from biting themselves, even though they are not insensitive to pain. The dental management of self-mutilation includes treatment with appliances such as soft mouthguard or lip bumper, extraction of all the teeth, and orthognathic surgery. We report a 25-month-old boy who was a known case of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome and presented with severe self-mutilation wound on his lower lip. Vital pulpectomy and coronal resection was done as a more conservative approach than extracting all primary anterior teeth. Due to maintaining the root portion of the teeth in the bone, it is expected that the normal growth of the alveolar bone will be achieved.

  • Dentigerous cyst is a cyst arising by tissue fluid accumulation between the enamel and the residual enamel epithelium. It includes the crown of the impacted tooth and excludes the root. The treatments of the dentigerous cyst are enucleation, marsupialization, decompression, surgical excision and etc. In these cases children were evaluated for the chief complaints of the remained mandibular primary second molar. Each cases showed swelling on the buccal side of the primary secondary premolar. In the radiologic evaluation a radiolucent lesion including the crown of the mandibular secondary premolar was found, and it was diagnosed as dentigerous cyst. And the histopathologic examination showed the same result. Marsupialization was operated through alveolar socket and the alveolar socket was protected with vaseline gauze, the obturator combined with space maintainer was followed by the operation. After the operation, the impacted permanent tooth was showing faster eruption speed than the other normal teeth.

  • The purpose of the current study was to investigate histologic changes in the alveolar bone of the lower molar region subsequent to the loss of their opposite molars, and to characterize chemical alterations by utilization of histochemical procedures. Twenty five rats(Sprague Dawley), approximately 150-200gm body weight, were used in this experiment. In the treated animals, upper molars were removed. The animals were decapitated by groups at the following intervals after teeth removals: 10th, 20th, 50th, 70th and 100th day. The normal, untreated rats were used as controls. The molar region of lower jaw, including the intact alvelar bone and teeth was dissected and specimens were decalcified in 3% formic acid. After the tissues were fully decalcified, the specimens were embedded in celloidin and sectioned in mesiodistal plane. These sections were stained in the following staining methods. Mallory azan stain and hematoxylin-eosin stain were utilized for structural evaluation. Polysaccharides were demonstrated by means of the PAS reaction. Acidmucopolysaccharides were studied by means of the colloidal iron stain. Alloxan-Schiff reaction was used for protein. The results were as follows: 1) In the control animals, bone resorption was noted in the distal alveolar bone proper and bone apposition was shown in the mesial alveolar bone proper. But in the treated animals, bone apposition was observed on the mesial and distal walls of the alveolus and osteoclastic activity was not noted in any walls. 2) Bone apposition was most prominent from the 10th to 20th day after treatment. 3) Appositional growth of cementum along the surface of root was prominent from the 50th to 70th day after treatment. 4) In the area where osteoblastic activity was apparent, osteoblasts were stained strongly in the PAS and alloxan-Schiff reaction. A plastic resorption line showed strong alloxan-Schiff reaction. 5) In the colloidal iron stain, the alveolar wall adjacent to the cementum apposition area was stained more strongly than the other areas.

  • American sycamore seedlings were grown in chambers with two different ozone concentrations ($O_3$-free air and air with additional $O_3$) for 45 days. Both the control and the $O_3$ chambers included non-fertilized and fertilized plants. After 18 days of $O_3$ fumigation, seedlings were placed in a clean chamber for 27 days. Seedlings under ozone fumigation showed a significant decrease in pigment contents and photosynthetic activity, and a significant increase in lipid peroxidation. Fertilization enhanced physiological damage such as the inhibition of photosynthetic activity and the increase of lipid peroxidation under ozone fumigation. During the recovery phase, the physiological damage level of seedlings increased with ozone fumigation. In addition, physiological damage was observed in the fertilized seedlings. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione reductase (GR) activities of $O_3$-treated seedlings increased up to 33.8% and 16.3% in the fertilized plants. The increase of SOD activity was higher in the fertilized plants than in the non-fertilized plants. Negative effects of ozone treatment were observed in the biomass of the leaves and the total dry weight of the fertilized sycamore seedlings. The $O_3$-treated seedlings decreased in stem, root and total dry weight, and the loss of biomass was statistically significant in the fertilized plants. In conclusion, physiological disturbance under normal nutrient conditions has an effect on growth response. In contrast, in conditions of energy shortage, although stress represents a physiological inhibition, it does not seem to affect the growth response.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to compare the adaptation of a straight wire between brackets positioned at the mid-lingual surface and those placed gingivally by using a three-dimensional simulation software. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed using OrthoAid, an in-house software. The subjects were 36 adolescents with normal Class I occlusion. For each dental cast, two bracket positioning approaches, namely the middle and gingival, were examined. In the middle group, the reference points were placed on the mid-lingual surface of each tooth, while in the gingival group, the reference points were positioned lingually on the anterior teeth. A 4th degree polynomial was adopted, and the in-plane and off-plane root mean squares (RMSs) of the distances between the reference points and the fitted polynomial curve were calculated using the software. Statistical analysis was performed using the paired-samples t-test (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: The mean in-plane RMS of the polynomial curve to the bracket distance in the gingival group was significantly lower than that in the middle group (p < 0.001). The off-plane RMS was higher in the gingivally positioned brackets in the maxilla than in the middle group (p < 0.001). However, the off-plane RMS in mandible was not statistically significantly different between the two groups (p = 0.274). Conclusions: The results demonstrated that the gingival placement of lingual brackets on the anterior teeth could decrease the distance between a tooth and the straight wire.

  • Background and Objectives: The proximal and distal nerve segments are preferentially involved in acquired demyelinating polyneuropathies (ADP). This study was undertaken in order to assess the usefulness of motor evoked potential (MEP) and somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) in the detection of the proximal nerve lesion in ADP. Methods: MEP, SSEP and conventional NCS were performed in 6 consecutive patients with ADP (3 AIDP, 3 CIDP). MEP was recorded from abductor pollicis brevis and abductor hallucis using magnetic stimulation of the cortex and the cervical/lumbar spinal roots. SSEP were elicited by stimulating the median and posterior tibial nerves. Latency from cortex and cervical/lumbar roots, central motor conduction time (CMCT), EN1-CN2 interpeak latency were measured for comparison. Results: MEP was recorded in 24 limbs (12 upper and 12 lower limbs) and SSEP in 24 limbs (12 median nerve, 12 posterior tibial nerve). F-wave latency was prolonged in 25 motor nerves (25/34, 73.5%). Prolonged CML and PML were found in 41.7% (10/24) and 45.8% (11/24), respectively. Interside difference (ISD) of CMCT was abnormally increased in the upper extremity, 66.7% (4/6 pairs) in case of CML-PML. EN1-CN2 interpeak latency was abnormally prolonged in one median nerve (1/10) and LN1-P1 interpeak latency was normal in all posterior tibial nerves. Conclusions: MEP and SSEP may provide useful information for the proximal nerve and root lesion in ADP. MEP and SSEP is supplemental examination as well as complementary to conventional NCS.

  • Purpose: This study investigated the effects of sex hormones across menstrual cycle phases on knee muscle activity during one-leg landing in non-athletic females. Methods: Twenty-six healthy females who reported normal menstrual cycles for the previous three months were tested when estrogen levels were highest (ovulation) and lowest (menstruation). Knee muscle activity was analyzed based on electromyography (EMG) data recorded during landing on a 30-cm box. Before data collection, each subject was trained in single-leg landing tasks ten times. Landing was analyzed by measuring the average of three landing tasks. EMG data were collected between the moment of ground contact and the point of knee maximum flexion. The maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) for normalization that was recorded as the EMG root-mean-square (RMS) during landing was tested, with paired t-tests used to assess differences in knee muscle activity according to menstrual cycle phases. Results: The results showed that the soleus, semitendinosus, and lateral gastrocnemius muscle activity during landing was differed significantly during ovulation compared to that during menstruation (p<0.05). No significant differences in vastus medialis activity were found between menstrual and ovulatory phases during landing (p>0.05). Conclusion: Changes in the menstrual cycle in response to sex hormones changed the activity of muscles around the knee during landing. Females utilize different muscle activity control strategies during different phases of the menstrual cycle, which may contribute to increased ACL injury risk.

  • PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate muscles activation relate to core stability during 5 therapeutic exercise in children with spastic diplegia. METHODS: The subjects of this study were 8 children with typical development and 12 children with spastic diplegia who have been treated in Bobath children's hospital, all of whom agreed to participate in the study. All subjects were measured to see their muscles activation of rectus abdominalis, external oblique abdominalis, elector spinae, gluteus maximus, rectus femoris, and semitendinosus with surface EMG. RESULTS: The results of this study were as follows : 1) There were statistically significant difference in the root mean square(RMS) of all muscles according to 5 therapeutic exercise in children with spastic diplegia. 2) There were statistically significant difference in the RMS of all muscles according to 5 therapeutic exercise in children with typical development. 3) Significant differences of the RMS between diplegic children and normal children were found in elector spinae and rectus femoris only curl-up exercise. CONCLUSION: As the above results, we suggest that 5 therapeutic exercises could be used for a core stability or core strengthening program. Depending on the individual needs of children with cerebral palsy, some of exercises may be more beneficial than others for achieving strength.

  • Echocardiography was performed to obtain the optimal planes for diagnosis of canine heartworm disease in 11 dogs. Imaging planes were taken the left ventricular outflow tract long-axis view, 4-chamber long-axis view, chordae tendineae level short-axis view and modified pulmonary arteries level short-axis view in the right parasternal window, and aptical 4-chamber long-axis view in hte left parasternal window. After echocaridography, the pulmonary artery valve pat was ligated with double 1-0 silk under the general anesthesia to prevent heartworm moving from pulmonary artery to right ventricle. The dogs were euthanized and examained for heartworms in heart and great vessels. Many adult heartworms were identified ultrasonographically within main pulmonary artery, bifurcation of pulmonary artery and right pulmonary artery, but not identified within right ventricle and atrium. At necropsy, adult heartworms were mainly found in pulmonary artery in 11 days, and also found in right ventricular outflow tract and right ventricle in 2 of 11 dogs. The modified pulmonary arteries level short-axis view was the best imaging plane for identifiying heartworms because the main pulmonary artery, branches of pulmonary artery and right pulmonary artery could be showed. The aortic root internal dimension (AOID) and right pulmonary atery internal dimension (RPAID) were measured from the modified pulmonary ateries level short-axis view and left ventricular outflow tract long-axis view. The RPAID and RPAID/AOID was higher in heartworm infected dogs than normal Korea Jin-do dogs in modified pulmonary arteries level short-axis view, and the AOID, RPAID and RPIAID/AOID was higher than in left ventricular outflow tract long-axis view, respectively. These results indicate that the pulmonary arteries were the major habitat of adult heartworm in canine heartworm disease and the modified pulmonary arteries level short-axis view was the best imaging planes for identifying heartworms because the main pulmonary arteries could be showed. Therefore the modified pulmonary arteries level short-axis view can be used for diagnosing heartworm disease and for monitoring dilation of pulmonary artery.
