  • This study presents free vibration of beam made of porous material. The mechanical properties of the beam is variable in the thickness direction and the beam is investigated in three situations: poro/nonlinear nonsymmetric distribution, poro/nonlinear symmetric distribution, and poro/monotonous distribution. First, the governing equations of porous beam are derived using principle of virtual work based on Euler-Bernoulli theory. Then, the effect of pores compressibility on natural frequencies of the beam is studied by considering clamped-clamped, clamped-free and hinged-hinged boundary conditions. Moreover, the results are compared with homogeneous beam with the same boundary conditions. Finally, the effects of poroelastic parameters such as pores compressibility, coefficients of porosity and mass on natural frequencies has been considered separately and simultaneously.

  • A 3-dimensional analysis is desired for a magnet of magnetically levitated vehicle because the geometrical shape of the magnet is complicated and nonsymmetric. A FEM package of FLUX3D is used to analyze the characteristic of the magnet. Various quantities could be observed like levitation force, flux density distribution along the air gap, edge and fringing effect, leakage flux pattern, etc. The simulation results from FLUX3D are compared with those of 2-D analysis and test results. There are a little difference between results due to the boundary conditions and magnetized B-H curve of the core.

  • The merit function arises from the development of the solution methods for the complementarity problems defined over the cone of non negative real vectors and has been well extended to the complementarity problems defined over the symmetric cones. In this paper, we focus on the extension of the merit functions including the gap function, the regularized gap function, the implicit Lagrangian and others to the complementarity problems defined over the nonsymmetric matrix cone. These theoretical results of this paper suggest new solution methods based on unconstrained and/or simply constrained methods to solve the matrix cone complementarity problems (MCCP).

  • The structural performance of a shear wall subjected to lateral loads is influenced by many factors, such as sectional shape, aspect ratio, vertical and horizontal reinforcement, lateral confinement and axial compression, etc. This experimental research is focusing to investigate the structural performance of T-shaped walls with different confining reinforcement. Experimental results show that all specimens finally failed by the crushing of the concrete in the compression zone. Although the location and content of the lateral confinement is different, the results are very similar during the negative loading direction where the flange is compressed. However, when flange is subjected to tension, the location and content of the lateral confinement results in a large difference in the structural performance of T-shaped walls. Therefore, selection of location and content of the lateral confinement would be important aspect in the design of the nonsymmetric structural walls.

  • In this paper we study efficient parallel implementation for hybrid iterative methods BICGSTAB and BICGSTAB $(\ell)$ with ${Well}=2$ on the CRAY C90 and the efficiency of their parallel performance is evaluated. numerical experiments suggest that on the CRAY C90 a parallel inner product algorithm called PDOTB be used for the par-allelization of hybrid iterative methods containing sensitive values of inner products. Lastly it is shown that the number of iterations in which parallel hybrid iterative methods satisfy a certain convergence criterion depends on the number of processors to be used.

  • In this paper a new approach to obtain the solution of the linear-quadratic Gaussian control problem for singularly perturbed discrete-time stochastic systems is proposed. The alogorithm proposed is based on exploring the previous results that the exact solution of the global discrete algebraic Riccati equations is found in terms of the reduced-order pure-slow and pure-fast nonsymmetric continuous-time algebraic Riccati equations and, in addition, the optimal global Kalman filter is decomposed into pure-slow and pure-fast local optimal filters both driven by the system measurements and the system optimal control input. It is shown that the optimal linear-quadratic Gaussian control problem for singularly perturbed linear discrete systems takes the complete decomposition and parallelism between pure-slow and pure-fast filters and controllers.

  • For the general case of loading conditions and boundary conditions, it is very difficult to obtain closed form solutions for buckling loads and natural frequencies of thin-walled structures because its behaviour is very complex due to the coupling effect of bending and torsional behaviour. In consequence, most of previous finite element formulations are introduce approximate displacement fields to use shape functions as Hermitian polynomials, and so on. The Purpose of this study is to presents a consistent derivation of exact dynamic stiffness matrices of thin-walled straight beams, to be used ill tile free vibration analysis, in which almost types of boundary conditions are exist An exact dynamic element stiffness matrix is established from governing equations for a uniform beam element of nonsymmetric thin-walled cross section. This numerical technique is accomplished via a generalized linear eigenvalue problem by introducing 14 displacement parameters and a system of linear algebraic equations with complex matrices. The natural frequency is evaluated for the thin-walled straight beam structure, and the results are compared with analytic solutions in order to verify the accuracy of this study.

  • We discuss two possibilities of using femtosecond pulse lasers as a new interferometric light source for enhanced precision surface-profile metrology. First, a train of ultra-fast laser pulses yields repeated low temporal coherence, which allows unequal-path scanning interferometry, which is not feasible with white light. Second, the high spatial coherence of femtosecond pulse lasers enables large-sized optics to be tested in nonsymmetric configurations with relatively small-sized reference surfaces. These two advantages are verified experimentally using Fizeau and Twyman-Green type scanning interferometers.

  • Incomplete LU factorization preconditioning techniques often have difficulty on indefinite sparse matrices. We present hybrid reordering strategies to deal with such matrices, which include new diagonal reorderings that are in conjunction with a symmetric nondecreasing degree algorithm. We first use the diagonal reorderings to efficiently search for entries of single element rows and columns and/or the maximum absolute value to be placed on the diagonal for computing a nonsymmetric permutation. To augment the effectiveness of the diagonal reorderings, a nondecreasing degree algorithm is applied to reduce the amount of fill-in during the ILU factorization. With the reordered matrices, we achieve a noticeable improvement in enhancing the stability of incomplete LU factorizations. Consequently, we reduce the convergence cost of the preconditioned Krylov subspace methods on solving the reordered indefinite matrices.

  • Projection spectral analysis is investigated and refined in this paper, in order to unify principal component analysis and independent component analysis. Singular value decomposition and spectral theorems are applied to nonsymmetric correlation or covariance matrices with multiplicities or singularities, where projections and nilpotents are obtained. Therefore, the suggested approach not only utilizes a sum-product of orthogonal projection operators and real distinct eigenvalues for squared singular values, but also reduces the dimension of correlation or covariance if there are multiple zero eigenvalues. Moreover, incremental learning strategies of projection spectral analysis are also suggested to improve the performance.
