The behaviour of beam-to-column connections plays an important role in the analysis and design of steel structures. A computer-based method is presented for nonlinear steel frames with semi-rigid connections accounting for shear deformations. The analytical procedure employs transcendental stability functions to model the effect of axial force on the stiffness of members. The member stiffness matrix, and the fixed end forces for various loads were found. The nonlinear analysis method is applied for three planar steel structures. The method is readily implemented on a computer using matrix structural analysis techniques and is applicable for the efficient nonlinear analysis of frameworks.
Cooling tower is analyzed as an assembly of layered nonlinear shell elements. Geometric representation of the shell is enabled through layered nonlinear shell elements to define the different layers of reinforcements and concrete by considering the material nonlinearity of each layer for the cooling tower shell. Modal analysis using Ritz vector analysis and nonlinear time history analysis by direct integration method have been carried out to study the effects of the inclination of the supporting columns of the cooling tower shell on its dynamic characteristics. The cooling tower is supported by I-type columns and ${\Lambda}$-type columns supports having the different inclination angles. Relevant comparisons of the dynamic response of the structural system at the base level (at the junction of the column and shell), throat level and at the top of the tower have been made. Dynamic response of the cooling tower is found to be significantly sensitive to the change of the inclination of the supporting columns. It is also found that the stiffness of the structure system increases with increase in inclination angle of the supporting columns, resulting in decrease of the period of the structural system. The participation of the stiffness of the tower in structural response of the cooling tower is fund to be dependent of the change in the inclination angle and even in the types of the supporting columns.
This paper deals with the formulation and solution of a wide class of structures, in the presence of both geometric and material nonlinearities, as a particular mathematical programming problem. We first present key ideas for the nonholonomic (path dependent) rate formulation for a suitably discretized structural model before we develop its computationally advantageous stepwise holonomic (path independent) counterpart. A feature of the final mathematical programming problem, known as a nonlinear complementarity problem, is that the governing relations exhibit symmetry as a result of the introduction of so-called nonlinear "residuals". One advantage of this form is that it facilitates application of a particular iterative algorithm, in essence a predictor-corrector method, for the solution process. As an illustrative example, we specifically consider the simplest case of plane trusses and detail in particular the general methodology for establishing the static-kinematic relations in a dual format. Extension to other skeletal structures is conceptually transparent. Some numerical examples are presented to illustrate applicability of the procedure.
Capacity spectrum method(CSM) of ATC-40(1996) and displacement coefficient method(DCM) of FEMA-273(1997) are applied to evaluate the seismic performance of bridges. In this study, equivalent response is obtained from nonlinear static analysis for the 3spans continues bridge and nonlinear maximum displacement response is calculated using CSM and DCM. Nonlinear maximum displacement response of DCM is larger than this of CSM. It is method that DCM can evaluate target displacement and ductility of structural to be easy and simple, but tend to overestimate the maximum displacement response. Therefore, this method is mainly used at preparation design level to evaluate the structural response. It is not desirable to evaluate the seismic performance using DCM.
Reinforced concrete bearing walls (RCBWs) are one of the most applicable structural systems. Therefore, vulnerability analysis and rehabilitation of the RCBW system are of great importance. In the present study, in order to the more precise investigation of the performance of this structural resistant system, pushover and nonlinear time history analyses based on several assumptions drawing upon experimental research were performed on several models with different stories. To validate the nonlinear analysis method, the analytical and experimental results are compared. Vulnerability evaluation was carried out on two seismic hazard levels and three performance levels. Eventually, the need for seismic rehabilitation with the basic safety objective (BSO) was investigated. The obtained results showed that the studied structures satisfied the BSO of the seismic rehabilitation guidelines. Consequently, according to the results of analyses and the desired performance, this structural system, despite its high structural weight and rigid connections and low flexibility, has integrated performance, and it can be a good option for earthquake-resistant constructions.
Elastic failures of cantilevered cylindrical shells subject to lateral load are caused mainly by geometrical nonlinearlity. Geometerally nonlinear analysis is call for so as to investigate failure mechanisms. In this paper the geometericlly nonlinear analysis of cantilevered cylindrical shells under transverse load by the Rayleigh-Ritz Method is presented to examine the collapse loads and the process of cross-sectional deformations. The critical stress for relatively long cylinders have a tendency to show low level in comparison with the classical buckling stress for compression.
In this study, the accuracy and reliability of fully nonlinear method against equivalent linear method for dynamic analysis of soil-structure interaction is investigated comparing the predicted results of both numerical procedures with the results of experimental shaking table tests. An enhanced numerical soil-structure model has been developed which treats the behaviour of the soil and the structure with equal rigour. The soil-structural model comprises a 15 storey structural model resting on a soft soil inside a laminar soil container. The structural model was analysed under three different conditions: (i) fixed base model performing conventional time history dynamic analysis, (ii) flexible base model (considering full soil-structure interaction) conducting equivalent linear dynamic analysis, and (iii) flexible base model performing fully nonlinear dynamic analysis. The results of the above mentioned three cases in terms of lateral storey deflections and inter-storey drifts are determined and compared with the experimental results of shaking table tests. Comparing the experimental results with the numerical analysis predictions, it is noted that equivalent linear method of dynamic analysis underestimates the inelastic seismic response of mid-rise moment resisting building frames resting on soft soils in comparison to the fully nonlinear dynamic analysis method. Thus, inelastic design procedure, using equivalent linear method, cannot adequately guarantee the structural safety for mid-rise building frames resting on soft soils. However, results obtained from the fully nonlinear method of analysis fit the experimental results reasonably well. Therefore, this method is recommended to be used by practicing engineers.
This paper presents a formulation to include the prestressing effects in available numerical models for the nonlinear material, instantaneous and long-term analysis of prestressed concrete shell structures, based on the displacement formulation of the finite element method. A four-node flat shell element is adopted for nonlinear analysis of prestressed concrete shells. This element was incorporated into an existing general-purpose finite element analysis program. A distinctive characteristic of the element is its capability to simulate the behavior of shells subjected to a variety of types of loading and drilling rotational stiffness. Consequently, the response of prestressed concrete shell structures can be predicted accurately using the proposed nonlinear finite element procedure.
This research article reported the nonlinear finite solutions of the nonlinear flexural strength and stress behaviour of nano sandwich graded structural shell panel under the combined thermomechanical loading. The nanotube sandwich structural model is derived mathematically using the higher-order displacement polynomial including the full geometrical nonlinear strain-displacement equations via Green-Lagrange relations. The face sheets of the sandwich panel are assumed to be carbon nanotube-reinforced polymer composite with temperature dependent material properties. Additionally, the numerical model included different types of nanotube distribution patterns for the sandwich face sheets for the sake of variable strength. The required equilibrium equation of the graded carbon nanotube sandwich structural panel is derived by minimizing the total potential energy expression. The energy expression is further solved to obtain the deflection values (linear and nonlinear) via the direct iterative method in conjunction with finite element steps. A computer code is prepared (MATLAB environment) based on the current higher-order nonlinear model for the numerical analysis purpose. The stability of the numerical solution and the validity are verified by comparing the published deflection and stress values. Finally, the nonlinear model is utilized to explore the deflection and the stresses of the nanotube-reinforced (volume fraction and distribution patterns of carbon nanotube) sandwich structure (different core to face thickness ratios) for the variable type of structural parameter (thickness ratio, aspect ratio, geometrical configurations, constraints at the edges and curvature ratio) and unlike temperature loading.
