  • We made a study on real-time determination method for relative position using the laser-measured distance data between satellites. We numerically performed the determination of relative position in accordance with extended Kalman filter algorithm using the vectors obtained through nonlinear equation of relative motion, laser simulator for distance measurement, and attitude determination of chief satellite. Because the spherical parameters of relative distance and direction are used, there occur some changes in precision depending on changes in relative distance when determining the relative position. As a result of simulation, it was possible to determine the relative position with several millimeter-level errors at a distance of 10 km, and sub-millimeter level errors at a distance of 1 km. In addition, we performed the determination of relative position assuming the case that global positioning system data was not received for long hours to see the impact of determination of chief satellite orbit on the determination of relative position. The determination of precise relative position at a long distance carried out in this study can be used for scientific mission using the satellite formation flying.

  • Using the cross-gain modulation (XGM) characteristics of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), multi-functional all-optical logic gates, including XOR, AND, and OR gates are successfully simulated and demonstrated at 10Gbit/s. A VPI component maker^TM simulation tool is used for the simulation of multi-functional all-optical logic gates and the10 Cbit/s input signal is made by a mode-locked fiber ring laser. A multi-quantum well (MQW) SOA is used for the simulation and demonstration of the all-optical logic system. Our suggested system is composed of three MQW SOAs, SOA-1 and SOA-2 for XOR logic operation and SOA-2 and SOA-3 for AND logic operation. By the addition of two output signals XOR and AND, all-optical OR logic can be obtained.

  • A mathematical model is proposed to analyze the force; acting on the hard contact lens fitted on the cornea. The model incorporates the nonlinear equations and their numerical solution program, based on the formulations of surface tension force arising from the capillary action in the tear-film layer between the lens and cornea. The model simulates how the adhesion between lens and cornea varies according to the base curves and diameters of the lenses. When the spherical lens is fitted on the spherical cornea it is to rotate downward due to the weight of lens itself until it reaches an equilibrium position along the cornea where the counter(upward) moment caused by net force between the upper and lower portion of the periphery of lens. It is found that both the adhesion and displacement of lens along the cornea, where the gravity of lens balances the capillary-induced upward force, increases rapidly as the base curve of lens increases, i.e., as the lens gets flatter, while the increase in the diameter of lenses has resulted in the less increase in the rotation and adhesion. With the base curve and diameters of lenses being remained constant the increase in surface tension of tear film yields the increase in the adhesion between the cornea and lens while the initial rotation of lens is inversely proportional to the surface tension of the tear film.

  • We report on the measurements of absorption spectra from acetylene ($^{12}C_2H_2$) and hydrogen cyanide ($H^{13}C^{14}N$) for wavelength reference in the C-band (conventional band) region using a supercontinuum optical source generated from a mode-locked $Cr^{4+}$:YAG laser. The center wavelength of the mode-locked $Cr^{4+}$:YAG laser was 1510 nm and the pulse duration was 75 fs at 100 MHz repetition rate. The supercontinuum source achieved a flatness of ${\pm}5dB$ over a wavelength range of more than 400 nm, using a 20 m long photonic crystal fiber. The measured absorption spectra from acetylene ($^{12}C_2H_2$) and hydrogen cyanide ($H^{13}C^{14}N$) had more than 50 lines and were analyzed for wavelength standardization.

  • Filter colorimeters have a set of spectral bands for which spectral responsivity is the same as the color matching function defined by CIE (Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage). We have designed a set of color matching function filters denoted by $\bar{x}-filter,\;\bar{y}-filter,\;and\;\bar{z}-filter$. Because the $\bar{x}-function$ has two transmission bands, two $\bar{x}-filters$ are designed to cover the $\bar{x}-function$. To design the filters, we developed a nonlinear least square fit program which determines the thickness of the color glasses by minimizing its spectral mismatch value ($f{_1}'$) to below 3 %. The design has been validated by fabrication of the $\bar{y}-bar$ filter, of which $f{_1}'$ was measured to be 2.8 %. Considering a LCD flat panel display as a device under test, we have calculated the systematic error of the colorimetric measurement using the designed filters.

  • In this paper, we propose easily tooling method for Seidel third order aberration, which are not well utilized in actual design process due to the complication of mathematical operation and the difficulty of understanding Seidel third order aberration theory, even though most insightful and systematic means in pre-designing for the initial data of optimization. First, using paraxial ray tracing and Seidel third order aberration theory, spherical aberration coefficient is derived for a two-mirror system with a finite object distance. The coefficient, which is expressed as a higher-order nonlinear equation, consists of design parameters(object distance, two curvatures, and inter-mirror distance) and effective focal length(EFL). Then, the expressed analytical equation is solved by using a computer with numerical analysis method. From the obtained numerical solutions satisfying the nearly zero coefficient condition($<10^{-6}$), linear fitting process offers a linear relationship called the curvature linear equation between two mirrors. Consequently, this linear equation has two worthy meanings: the equation gives a possibility to obtain initial design data for optimization easily. And the equation shows linear relationship to a two-mirror system with a finite object distance under the condition of corrected third order spherical aberration.

  • The molecular orientational dynamics of the nonlinear optical(NLO) side-chain polymer N-(4-nitrophenyl)-(L)-prolinol-poly (pphenylene terephthalates) have been studied using nonlinear optical responses as measured by second harmonic generation (SHG). A new pulsed corona poling is used to orient the NLO chromophores and the polymer segments into the noncentrosymmetric structure required to obtain the SHG signal. By corona poling of negative high voltage pulses with variable repetition rates (between 0.5 and 10 ㎑) at temperature between 25$^{\circ}C$ and 80$^{\circ}C$, well below and about the glass transition temperature 70$^{\circ}C$, the side-chain chromophores and the polymer chain contour rearrange themselves and create the domain structure observed by atomic force microscopy(AFM). The pulsed corona voltage enhances the orientational ordering of the NLO chromophores and also significantly influences the growth of SHG signal and the improved relaxation behavior after the poling field is removed, reducing the visible damage to the polymer film dramatically. This new pulsed corona poling experiment gave direct in situ evidence that the NLO chromophore and the polymer backbone undergo anisotropic rearrangement during the poling process.

  • Potassium lithium niobate(KLN) single crystal for a nonlinear-optic material, which changes the wavelength of lasers, has a ferroelectric tetragonal tungsten bronze structure at room temperature. It has been very hard to get single crystals of good quality due to the cracks during cooling process. In order to investigate the composition change due to the evaporation of solution during the growth, the thermogravimetric analysis was carried out. In atmospheric condition at $1000^{\circ}C$ which is about $10^{\circ}C$ higher than the crystal growing temperature, the weight change was negligible amount of $1.46{\times}10^{-5}$g/($\textrm{cm}^2$hr). By using both the Pt plate as the nucleation site and the slow cooling method with temperature fluctuation, KLN single crystal of good quality of size 1 cm could be obtained. The phase transition temperature was $490^{\circ}C$, which was higher than that reported by other researchers of the other composition. The optical anisotropy due to the absorption of OH-band exists in the range of IR.

  • We propose a novel metal-waveguide structure for sustaining long-range surface-plasmon-polaritons (LRSPP). The LRSPP waveguides are composed basically of two asymmetric metal layers: a very thin, finite-width metal strip on top of a metal slab with a dielectric gap in between them. Mode cut-off of LRSPPs excited on the double-metal waveguides is characterized by consistently investigating their dispersion relations and mode profiles. We also confirm experimentally the existence of low-loss, well-confined LRSPP modes by measuring far-field outputs emerging from an edge of the asymmetric double-metal waveguides. In the experiment, we have fabricated several types of SPP waveguide devices including straight lines, S-bend, and Y-branch consisting of gold strips (20 nm-thick, $5{\mu}m$-wide). Overall propagation loss of the proposed double-metal waveguides is quite comparable to that of single metal-strip waveguides, in addition the mode sizes can be tuned by increasing the core-insulator gap between the metal layers to get a higher coupling efficiency with a single-mode fiber in telecom wavelength. The proposed LRSPP waveguides may open up realization of SPP-waveguide sensors or nonlinear SPP-devices by replacing the core-insulator with a bio-fluid or a nonlinear medium.

  • We synthesized the nonlinear optical (NLO) PI-SOT(polyimide system, 4-[N,N-bis(hydroxyethyl)amino-4,-($\beta$-cyano-$\beta$-methylsulfonyl)vinyl]azobenzene) polymer with high electro-optic coefficients as well as good thermal and temporal stabilities of the elector-optic coefficient ${\gamma}_33$ by the simple Mitsunobu reaction. By using the simple reflection method of C. C. Teng, we measured the thermal and temporal stabilities of the electro-optic coefficient ${\gamma}_33$ of corona-poled PI-SOT polymer at the wavelength of 632.8 nm and 852 nm, respectively. At the temperature of $20^{\circ}C$, the electro-optic coefficient ${\gamma}_33$ of corona-poled PI-SOT polymer were 25.12 pm/V at the wavelength of 632.8 nm and 5.40 pm/V at the wavelength of 852 nm. These values were highly stabilized for more than 60 days at 2$0^{\circ}C$ and stabilized within 6% for more than 10 hours at $100^{\circ}C$.
