  • Computer is used to analyze nonlinear networks. Integrated circuits and new nonlinear elements have generated much interest in nonlinear circuit theory. A key to the understanding and analysis of nonlinear circuits is the study of characteristics for nonlinear elements and nonlinear resistive networks both in theory and in computation. In this apper, an iteration method using cut set analysis for nonlinear dc analysis based on Branin's method is described. Application of this algorithm to solve two nonlinear problems, is presented and a possible method of improving the basic algorithm by means of a sparse matrix technique is described.

  • This paper presents He's Energy Balance Method (EBM) for solving nonlinear oscillatory differential equations. Three strong nonlinear cases have been studied analytically. Analytical results of the EBM are compared with numerical solutions using Runge-Kutta's algorithm. The effects of different important parameters on the nonlinear response of the systems are studied. The results show the presented method is potentially to solve high nonlinear vibration equations.

  • An analytical method is presented for evaluation of the steady state periodic behavior of nonlinear structural systems. This method is based on the substructure synthesis formulation and a harmonic balance procedure, which is applied to the analysis of nonlinear responses. A complex nonlinear system is divided into substructures, of which equations are approximately transformed to modal coordinates including nonlinear term under the reasonable procedure. Then, the equations are synthesized into the overall system and the nonlinear solution for the system is obtained. Based on the harmonic balance method, the proposed procedure reduces the size of large degrees-of-freedom problem in the solving nonlinear equations. Feasibility and advantages of the proposed method are illustrated using the study of the nonlinear rotating machine system as a large mechanical structure system. Results obtained are reported to be an efficient approach with respect to nonlinear response prediction when compared with other conventional methods.

  • Many classes of nonlinear systems can be represented by Volterra kernel expansion. Therefore, identification of Volterra kernels of nonlinear system is an important task for obtaining the nonlinear characteristics of the nonlinear system. Although one of the authors has recently proposed a new method for obtaining the Volterra kernels of a nonlinear system by use of M-sequence and correlation technique, our mettled of nonlinear system identification is limited to Wiener-type nonlinear system and we can not apply this method to the identification of Hammerstein-type nonlinear system. This paper describes a new mettled for obtaining Volterra kernels of Hammerstein nonlinear system by adding a linear element in front of tile Hammerstein system. First we calculate the linear element of Hammerstein system by use of conventional correlation method. Secondly, we put a linear element in front of Hammerstein system. Then the total system becomes Wiener-type nonlinear system. Therefore we can use our method on Volterra kernel identification by use of M-sequence. Thus we get the coefficients of the approximation polynomial of nonlinear element of Hammerstein system. From the results of simulation, a good agreement with theoretical considerations is obtained, showing a wide applicability of our method.

  • Based on Banach fixed point theorem, a method to calculate nonlinear superposition for three interacting Stokes' waves is proposed in this paper. A mathematical formulation for the nonlinear superposition in deep water and some numerical solutions were investigated. The authors carried out the numerical study with three progressive linear potentials of different wave numbers and succeeded in solving the nonlinear wave profiles of their three wave-interaction, that is, using only linear wave potentials, it was possible to realize the corresponding nonlinear interacting wave profiles through iteration of the method. The stability of the method for the three interacting Stokes' waves was analyzed. The calculation results, together with Fourier transform, revealed that the iteration made it possible to predict higher-order nonlinear frequencies for three Stokes' waves' interaction. The proposed method has a very fast convergence rate.

  • The empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method is well-known for its ability to decompose a multi-component signal into a set of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). The method uses a sifting process in which local extrema of a signal are identified and followed by a spline fitting approximation for decomposition. This method provides an effective and robust approach for decomposing nonlinear and non-stationary signals. On the other hand, the IMF components do not automatically guarantee a well-defined physical meaning hence it is necessary to validate the IMF components carefully prior to any further processing and interpretation. In this paper, an attempt to use the EMD method to identify properties of nonlinear elastic multi-degree-of-freedom structures is explored. It is first shown that the IMF components of the displacement and velocity responses of a nonlinear elastic structure are numerically close to the nonlinear normal mode (NNM) responses obtained from two-dimensional invariant manifolds. The IMF components can then be used in the context of the NNM method to estimate the properties of the nonlinear elastic structure. A two-degree-of-freedom shear-beam building model is used as an example to illustrate the proposed technique. Numerical results show that combining the EMD and the NNM method provides a possible means for obtaining nonlinear properties in a structure.

  • Nonlinear dynamic response of a sandwich beam considering porous core and nano-composite face sheet on nonlinear viscoelastic foundation with temperature-variable material properties is investigated in this research. The Hamilton's principle and beam theory are used to drive the equations of motion. The nonlinear differential equations of sandwich beam respect to time are obtained to solve nonlinear differential equations by Homotopy perturbation method (HPM). The effects of various parameters such as linear and nonlinear damping coefficient, linear and nonlinear spring constant, shear constant of Pasternak type for elastic foundation, temperature variation, volume fraction of carbon nanotube, porosity distribution and porosity coefficient on nonlinear dynamic response of sandwich beam are presented. The results of this paper could be used to analysis of dynamic modeling for a flexible structure in many industries such as automobiles, Shipbuilding, aircrafts and spacecraft with solar easured at current time step and the velocity and displacement were estimated through linear integration.

  • A method based on frequency domain approaches is presented for the nonlinear parameters identification of structure having nonlinear joints. The finite element model of linear substructure is us ed to calculating its frequency response functions needed in parameter identification process. This method is easily applicable to a complex real structure having nonlinear elements since it uses the frequency response function of finite element model. Since this method is performed in frequency domain, the number of equations required to identify the unknown parameters can be easily increased as many as it needed, just by not only varying excitation amplitude but also selecting excitation frequencies. The validity of this method is tested numerically and experimentally with a cantilever beam having the nonlinear element. It was verified through examples that the method is useful to identify the nonlinear parameters of a structure having arbitary nonlinear boundaries.

  • This paper presents a fuzzy set method to enforce complementarity constraints (CCs) in a nonlinear interior point method (NIPM)-based optimization. NIPM is a Newton-type approach to nonlinear programming problems, but it adopts log-barrier functions to deal with the obstacle of managing inequality constraints. The fuzzy-enforcement method has been implemented for CCs, which can be incorporated in optimization problems for real-world applications. In this paper, numerical simulations that apply this method to power system optimal power flow problems are included.

  • Mammography is the most common technique for the early detection of breast cancer. To diagnose correctly and treat of breast cancer efficiently, many image enhancement methods have been developed. This paper presents a nonlinear image enhancement method for the enhancement of digital mammogram. The proposed method is composed of a nonlinear function for brightness improvement and a nonlinear filter for contrast enhancement. The nonlinear function improves the brightness of dark area and extends the dynamic range of bright area, and the nonlinear filter efficiently enhances the specific regions and objects of the mammogram. The final enhanced image was obtained by combining the processed image with the nonlinear function and the filtered image with the nonlinear filter. The proposed nonlinear image enhancement method was confirmed the enhanced performance comparing with other existing methods.
