This study presents a new beam-column model comprising material nonlinearity and joint flexibility to predict the nonlinear response of reinforced concrete structures. The nonlinear behavior of connections has an outstanding role on the nonlinear response of reinforced concrete structures. In presented research, the joint flexibility is considered applying a rotational spring at each end of the member. To derive the moment-rotation behavior of beam-column connections, the relative rotations produced by the relative slip of flexural reinforcement in the joint and the flexural cracking of the beam end are taken into consideration. Furthermore, the considered spread plasticity model, unlike the previous models that have been developed based on the linear moment distribution subjected to lateral loads includes both lateral and gravity load effects, simultaneously. To confirm the accuracy of the proposed methodology, a simply-supported test beam and three reinforced concrete frames are considered. Pushover and nonlinear dynamic analysis of three numerical examples are performed. In these examples the nonlinear behavior of connections and the material nonlinearity using the proposed methodology and also linear flexibility model with different number of elements for each member and fiber based distributed plasticity model with different number of integration points are simulated. Comparing the results of the proposed methodology with those of the aforementioned models describes that suggested model that only uses one element for each member can appropriately estimate the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete structures.
The concern about hollow core PC slab has been increased to improve the workability during a construction of building by reducing self weight of structural members. In this manner, recently, TRS (Tripple Ribs Slab) was developed as a new type of half PC slab system. TRS member consists of the triple webs and the bottom flange prestressed by strands. The slab system is completed by casting of topping concrete on the TRS after filling styrofoam between the webs. This paper, presents a flexural experiment to investigate the flexural capacity of the TRS. Five full scale TRS members were made and tested under simple support condition to be failed by flexure and their strength was evaluated by code equations; the variables in the test are the depth and the presence of topping or raised spot formed when slip-forming. In addition, a nonlinear sectional analysis was performed for the specimens and the result was compared with the test results. From the study, it was found that the TRS has enough flexural strength and ductility to resist the design loads and its strength can be suitably predicted by using code equations. The raised spot did not affect the strength so that the spot need not to be removed by doing additional work. For the more accurate prediction of TRS's flexural behavior by using nonlinear sectional analysis, it is recommended to consider the concrete's brittle property due to slip-forming process in the modeling.

The moment-curvature envelope describes the changes in the flexural capacity with deformation during a nonlinear analysis. Therefore, the moment-curvature analysis for reinforced concrete columns, indicating the available flexural strength and ductility, can be conducted providing the stress-strain relation for the concrete and steel are known. The moments and curvatures associated with increasing flexural deformations of the column may be computed for various column axial loads by incrementing the curvature and satisfying the requirements of strain compatibility and equilibrium of forces. Clearly it is important to have accurate information concerning the complete stress-strain curve of confined high-strength concrete in order to conduct reliable moment-curvature analysis to assess the ductility available from high-strength columns. However, it is not easy to explicitly characterize the mechanical behavior of confined high-strength concrete because of various parameter values, such as the confinement type of rectilinear ties, the compressive strength of concrete, the volumetric ratio and strength of rectangular ties, etc. So a stress-strain confinement model is developed which can simulate a complete inelastic moment-curvature relations of a high-strength reinforced concrete column
In this research, the analysis of post-buckling behavior of tapered columns has been performed under a combined load of uniformly distributed axial load along the length and concentric axial load at free end by solving the nonlinear differential equation with the differential transformation technique. The buckling load at various slopes at free end of column is calculated and the results of the analysis using the differential transformation technique is verified with those of previous studies. It is also shown through the results that the buckling load of sinusoidal tapered columns is largest, the linear is second largest, and the parabolic is small in the all ranges of slopes at free end and the deflection of parabolic tapered columns in the x coordinates is largest, the sinusoidal is second largest, and the linear is smallest in the range of slope 0 to 140 degrees at free end. However, when the range of the slope is 160 to 176 degrees at the free end, the deflection of sinusoidal tapered columns in the x coordinates is largest, the linear is second largest, and the parabolic is smallest. In addition, for the linear tapered column, the buckling load increases along with the flexural stiffness ratio. Also, for the parabolic and the sinusoidal tapered column, the buckling loads increase and decrease as the flexural ratios increase in the range of flexural stiffness ratio n = 1.0 to n = 2.0. Through this research, it is verified that the differential transformation technique can be applied to solve the nonlinear differential equation problems, such as analysis of post-buckling behavior of tapered columns. It is also expected that the differential transformation technique apply to various more complicated problems in future.
The purpose of this paper is to provide an experimental and analytical study on the reinforced large diameter pretensioned high strength concrete (R-LDPHC) pile. R-LDPHC pile was reinforced with infilled concrete, longitudinal, and transverse rebar to increase the flexural and shear strength of conventional large diameter PHC (LDPHC) pile without changing dimension of the pile. To evaluate the shear and flexural strength enhancement effects of R-LDPHC piles compared with conventional LDPHC pile, a two-point loading tests were conducted under simple supported conditions. Nonlinear analysis on the basis of the conventional layered sectional approach was also performed to evaluate effects of infilled concrete and longitudinal rebar on the flexural strength of conventional LDPHC pile. Moreover, ultimate strength design method was adopted to estimate the effect of transverse rebar and infilled concrete on the shear strength of a pile. The analytical results were compared with the results of the bending and shear test. Test results showed that the flexural strength and shear strength of R-LDPHC pile were increased by 2.3 times and 3.3 times compared to those of the conventional LDPHC pile, respectively. From the analytical study, it was found that the flexural strength and shear strength of R-LDPHC pile can be predicted by the analytical method by considering rebar and infilled concrete effects, and the average difference of flexural strength between experimental results and calculated result was 10.5% at the ultimate state.
A new theory of weightless sagging planer elasto-flexible cables under point loads is developed earlier by the authors and used for predicting the nonlinear dynamic response of cable-suspended linear elastic beams. However, this theory is not valid for nonlinear elastic cracked concrete beams possessing different positive and negative flexural rigidity. In the present paper, the flexural response of simply supported cracked concrete beams suspended from cables by two hangers is presented. Following a procedure established earlier, rate-type constitutive equations and third order nonlinear differential equations of motion for the structures undergoing small elastic displacements are derived. Upon general quasi-static loading, negative nodal forces, moments and support reactions may be introduced in the cable-suspended concrete beams and linear modal frequencies may abruptly change. Subharmonic resonances are predicted under harmonic loading. Uncoupling of the nodal response is proposed as a more general criterion of crossover phenomenon. Significance of the bilinearity ratio of the concrete beam and elasto-configurational displacements of the cable for the structural response is brought out. The relevance of the proposed theory for the analysis and the design of the cable-suspended bridges is critically evaluated.
Ultimate flexural buckling strength of cylindrical steel shells for the wind turbine tower structure was investigated by applying the geometrically and materially nonlinear finite element method. The effects of initial imperfection, radius to thickness ratio, and type of steel on the ultimate flexural strength of cylindrical shell were analyzed. The flexural strengths of cylindrical shells obtained by FEA were compared with design flexural strengths specified in Eurocode 3 and AISI. The shell buckling modes recommended in DNV-RP-C202 and the out-of-roundness tolerance and welding induced imperfections specified in Eurocode 3 were used in the nonlinear FE analysis as initial geometrical imperfections. The radius to thickness ratios of cylindrical shell in the range of 60 to 210 were considered and shells are assumed to be made of SM520 or HSB800 steel.

The current analytical techniques for R/C elements under severe dynamic repeated loads, like earthquake or impact, has two major problems; one is that the effects of strain rate are not considered and the other one is the current model was developed based on flexural behavior only. Thus, this study develops a computer software that can idealize the flexural and shear behavior of R/C elements using several parameters and also can consider the effects of strain rate. The analytical results using the developed analytical technique were compared with several experimental results and were generally satisfied.
The stress-strain relationship of concrete in flexure is one of the essential parameters in assessing the flexural strength and ductility of reinforced concrete (RC) columns. An overview of previous research studies revealed that the presence of strain gradient would affect the maximum concrete stress developed in flexure. However, no quantitative model was available to evaluate the strain gradient effect on concrete under flexure. Previously, the authors have conducted experimental studies to investigate the strain gradient effect on maximum concrete stress and respective strain and developed two strain-gradient-dependent factors k3 and ko for modifying the flexural concrete stress-strain curve. As a continued study, the authors herein will extend the investigation of strain gradient effects on flexural strength and ductility of RC columns to concrete strength up to 100 MPa by employing the strain-gradient-dependent concrete stress-strain curve using nonlinear moment-curvature analysis. It was evident from the results that both the flexural strength and ductility of RC columns are improved under strain gradient effect. Lastly, for practical engineering design purpose, a new equivalent rectangular concrete stress block incorporating the combined effects of strain gradient and concrete strength was proposed and validated. Design formulas and charts have also been presented for flexural strength and ductility of RC columns.
The flexural strength of composite HSB I-girders under a positive moment was investigated using the moment-curvature analysis method to evaluate the applicability of the current AASHTO LRFD design specifications to such girders. A total of 2,391 composite I-girder sections that satisfied the section proportion limits of the AASHTO LRFD specifications was generated by the random sampling technique to consider a wide range of section properties. The flexural capacities of the sections were calculated inthe nonlinear moment-curvature analysis in which the HSB600 and HSB800 steels were modeled as an elasto-plastic strain-hardening material, and the concrete, as a CEB-FIP model. The effects of the ductility ratio and the compressive strength of the concrete slab on the flexural strength of the composite girders made of HSB and SM520-TMC steels were analyzed. The numerical results indicated that the current AASHTO LRFD equation can be used to calculate the flexural strength of composite girders made of HSB600 steel. In contrast, the current AASHTO LRFD equation was found to be non-conservative in its prediction of the flexural strength of composite HSB800 girders. Based on the numerical results of this study for 2,391 girders, a new design equation for the flexural strength of composite HSB800 girders in a positive moment was proposed.
