  • This paper addresses the systematic procedure using sequential approach for the analysis of the coupled thermo-mechanical behavior of a steady rolling tire. Not only the knowledge of mechanical stresses but also of the temperature loading in a rolling tire are very important because material damage and material properties are significantly affected by the temperature. In general, the thermo-mechanical behavior of a pneumatic tire is highly complex transient phenomenon that requires the solution of a dynamic nonlinear coupled themoviscoelasticity problem with heat source resulting from internal dissipation and friction. In this paper, a sequential approach, with effective calculation schemes, to modeling this system is presented in order to predict the temperature distribution with reasonable sccuracies in a steady state rolling tire. This approach has the three major analysis modules-deformation, dissipation, and thermal modules. In the dissipation module, an analytic method for the calculation of the heat source in a rolling tire is established using viscoelastic theory. For the verification of the calculated temperature profiles and rolling resistance at different velocities, they were compared with the measured ones.

  • Electricity is transmitted by transmission lines from the source of production to the distribution system and then to the end users. Failure of a transmission line can lead to devastating economic losses and to negative social consequences resulting from the interruption of electricity. A comprehensive in-house numerical model that combines the data of computational fluid dynamic simulations of tornado wind fields with three dimensional nonlinear structural analysis modelling of the transmission lines (conductors and ground-wire) is used in the current study. Many codes of practice recommend neglecting the tornado forces acting on the conductors and ground-wires because of the complexity in predicting the conductors' response to such loads. As such, real transmission line systems are numerically simulated and then analyzed with and without the inclusion of the lines to assess the effect of tornado loads acting on conductors on the overall response of transmission towers. In addition, the behaviour of the conductors under the most critical tornado configuration is described. The sensitivity of the lines' behaviour to the magnitude of tornado loading, the level of initial sag, the insulator's length, and lines self-weight is investigated. Based on the current study results, a recommendation is made to consider conductors and ground-wires in the analysis and design of transmission towers under the effect of tornado wind loads.

  • This study presents comparation of fixed and viscos boundary condition effects on three-dimensional earthquake response and performance of a RCC dam considering linear and non-linear response. For this purpose, Cine RCC dam constructed in Aydın, Turkey, is selected in applications. The Drucker-Prager material model is considered for concrete and foundation rock in the nonlinear time-history analyses. Besides, hydrodynamic effect was considered in linear and non-linear dynamic analyses for both conditions. The hydrodynamic pressure of the reservoir water is modeled with the fluid finite elements based on the Lagrangian approach. The contact-target element pairs were used to model the dam-foundation-reservoir interaction system. The interface between dam and foundation is modeled with welded contact for both fixed and viscos boundary conditions. The displacements and principle stress components obtained from the linear and non-linear analyses are compared each other for empty and full reservoir cases. Seismic performance analyses considering demand-capacity ratio criteria were also performed for each case. According to numerical analyses, the total displacements and besides seismic performance of the dam increase by the effect of the viscous boundary conditions. Besides, hydrodynamic pressure obviously decreases the performance of the dam.

  • New output voltage control technique based on the simple feedback linearization is proposed. The system states are first divided into fast states and slow states. Then, the control stage is composed of the fast inner current control loop and the slow outer voltage control loop. From the inner loop, the average control is derived by the sliding mode concept and it is inserted into the dynamic equations of the slow states in the outer loop. Applying the feedback linearization technique to the obtained large-signal models of the PWM dc-dc converters, linearized large-signal models are obtained for the slow states. With this technique, the output voltage controller of the PWM dc-dc converters can be designed easily in the global state space and its control performance can also be much improved.

  • This research presented a numerical and experimental study on the seismic performance of first-generation base-isolated and fixed-base nuclear power plants (NPP). Three types of the base isolation system were applied to rehabilitate the first-generation nuclear power plants: frictional pendulum (FP), high-damping rubber (HDR) and lead-rubber (LR) base isolation. Also, an Excel program was proposed for the design of the abovementioned base isolators in accordance with UBC 97 and the Japan Society of Base Isolation Regulation. The seismic assessment was performed using the pushover and nonlinear time history analysis methods in accordance with the FEMA 356 regulation. To validate the adequacy of the proposed design procedure, two small-scale NPPs were constructed at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia's structural laboratory and subjected to a pushover test for two different base conditions, fixed and HDR-isolated base. The results showed that base-isolated structures achieved adequate seismic performance compared with the fixed-base one, and all three isolators led to a significant reduction in the containment's tension, overturning moment and base shear.

  • Gait analysis is essential to identify accurate cause and knee condition from patients who display abnormal walking. Traditional linear tools can, however, mask the true structure of motor variability, since biomechanical data from a few strides during the gait have limitation to understanding the system. Therefore, it is necessary to propose a more precise dynamic method. The chaos analysis, a nonlinear technique, focuses on understand how variations in the gait pattern change over time. Eight healthy eight subjects walked on a treadmill for 100 seconds at 60 Hz. Three dimensional walking kinematic data were obtained using two cameras and KWON3D motion analyzer. The largest Lyapunov exponent from the measured knee angular displacement time series was calculated to quantify local stability. This study quantified the variability present in time series generated from gait parameter via chaos analysis. Knee flexion-extension patterns were found to be chaotic. The proposed Lyapunov exponent can be used in rehabilitation and diagnosis of recoverable patients.

  • One of the important factors is the infill walls in the change of the structural rigidity, ductility, dynamic and static characteristics of the structures. The infill walls are not generally included in numerical analysis of reinforced concrete (RC) structural system due to lack of suitable theory and the difficulty of calculating the recommended models. In seismic regions worldwide, the residential structures are generally RC buildings with infill wall. Therefore, understanding the contribution of the infill walls to seismic performance of buildings may have a vital importance. This paper investigates the effects of infill walls on seismic performance of the existing RC residential buildings by considering requirements of the Turkish Earthquake Code (TEC). Seismic performance levels of residential RC buildings with and without walls in high-hazard zones were determined according to the nonlinear procedure given in the code. Pushover curves were obtained by considering the effect of masonry infill walls on seismic performance of RC buildings. The analysis results showed that the infill walls beneficially effected to the rigidity, roof displacements and seismic performance of the building.

  • To improve control performance of a non-linear system, many other researches have used the sliding mode control algorithm. The sliding mode controller is known to be robust against nonlinear and unmodeled dynamic terms. However. this algorithm raises the inherent chattering caused by excessive switching inputs around the sliding surface. Therefore, in order to solve the chattering problem and improve control performance, this study has developed the sliding mode controller with a perturbation estimator using the observer-based fuzzy adaptive network generates the control input for compensating unmodeled dynamics terms and disturbance. And, the weighting parameters of the fuzzy adaptive network are updated on-line by adaptive law in order to force the estimation errors to converge to zero. Therefore, the combination of sliding mode control and fuzzy adaptive network gives rise to the robust and intelligent routine. For evaluating control performance of the proposed approach. tracking control simulation is carried out for the hydraulic motion simulator which is a 6-degree of freedom parallel manipulator.

  • Seismic control performance of MR dampers, which have severe nonlinearity, differs with respect to the dynamic characteristics of an earthquake such as magnitude, frequency and duration. In this study, the effects of excitation characteristics on the equivalent linear system of a building structure with the MR damper are investigated through numerical analysis for artificial ground motions generated from different response spectrums. The equivalent damping ratio of the structure with the MR damper is calculated using Newmark and Hall's equations for ground motion amplification factors. It is found that the equivalent damping ratio of the structure with the MR damper is dependent on the ratio of the maximum friction force of the MR damper over excitation magnitude. frequency contents of the earthquake ground motion affects the equivalent damping ratio of long-period structures considerably. Also, additional damping effect caused by interaction between the viscousity and friction of the MR damper is observed. Finally, response reduction factors for equivalent linear systems are proposed in order to improve accuracy in the prediction of the actual nonlinear response.

  • This study presents new scheme for various walking pattern of biped robot under the limitted enviroments. We show that the neural network is significantly more attractive intelligent controller design than previous traditional forms of control systems. A multilayer backpropagation neural network identification is simulated to obtain a learning control solution of biped robot. Once the neural network has learned, the other neural network control is designed for various trajectory tracking control with same learning-base. The main advantage of our scheme is that we do not require any knowledge about the system dynamic and nonlinear characteristic, and can therefore treat the robot as a black box. It is also shown that the neural network is a powerful control theory for various trajectory tracking control of biped robot with same learning-vase. That is, we do net change the control parameter for various trajectory tracking control. Simulation and experimental result show that the neural network is practically feasible and realizable for iterative learning control of biped robot.
