This paper designs a looper-tension controller for mass-flow stabilization in hot strip finishing mills. By Newton's 2nd law and Hooke's law, nonlinear dynamic equations on the looper-tension system are firstly derived, and linearized by a linearization algorithm using a Taylor's series expansion. Moreover, a tension calculation model is obtained from the nonlinear dynamic equations which is called as a soft sensor of strip tension between two neighboring stands. Next, a looper-tension servo controller is designed by an ILQ(Inverse Linear Quadratic optimal control) algorithm, and it is combined with a minimal disturbance observer which to attenuate speed disturbances by AGC and operator interventions, etc.. Finally, it is shown from by a computer simulation that the proposed ILQ controller with a disturbance observer is very effective in stabilizing the strip mass-flow under some disturbances, moreover it has a good command following performance.

Backlash in the actuator is one of the most important nonlinearities that limit the performance of speed and position control of mechanical systems. In this paper, we propose disturbance observers in order to estimate the effect of nonlinearities and cancel them subsequently. As a result the disturbance observers make the nonlinear system behave linearly. And finally we show that the disturbance observers guarantee the system robustness and the performance to reject the effect of backlash in the face of parameter uncertainties.

Design method of a robust impedance control is proposed for the kinematically redundant manipulators. To achieve this objective, we first use the momentum feedback disturbance observer(MFDOB) scheme which can handle the nonlinear dynamics of a manipulator in Joint space. An extended task space formulation to describe the behaviors of task and null spaces of redundant manipulator is employed. Using the extended task space formulation and disturbance observer scheme, a robust impedance control method is designed. The performance of the proposed extended impedance controller is verified through experiments with a planar three links direct-drive manipulator.

This paper presents a new sensorless vector control system for high performance induction motor drives fed by a matrix converter with non-linearity compensation and disturbance observer. The nonlinear voltage distortion that is caused by commutation delay and on-state voltage drop in switching device is corrected by a new matrix converter modeling. The lumped disturbances such as parameter variation and load disturbance of the system are estimated by the radial basis function network (RBFN). An adaptive observer is also employed to bring better responses at the low speed operation. Experimental results are shown to illustrate the performance of the proposed system.
This paper presents a disturbance observer based on an $H_{\infty}$ controller synthesis for the trajectory control of a hydraulic excavator. Compared to conventional robot manipulators driven by electrical motors, the hydraulic excavator has more nonlinear and coupled dynamics. In particular, the interactions between an excavation tool and the materials being excavated are unstructured and complex. In addition, its operating modes depend on working conditions, which make it difficult to not only derive the exact mathematical model but also design a controller systematically. In this study, the approximated linear model obtained through off-line system identification is used as nominal plant model for a disturbance observer. A disturbance observer based tracking controller which considers the effect of disturbance and model uncertainty is synthesized in $H_{\infty}$ frameworks. Simulation results are used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed control scheme.
A nonlinear speed control for a permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motor using a simple disturbance estimation technique is presented. By using a feedback linearization, scheme, the nonlinear motor model can be linearized. To compensate an undesirable output performance under the mismatch of the system parameters and load conditions the controller parameters will be estimated by using a disturbance observer theory. Since only the two reduced-order observers are used for the parameter estimation, the observer designs are considerably simple and the computational load of the controller for parameter estimation is negligibly small. The proposed control scheme is implemented on a PM synchronous motor using DSP TMS320C31 and the effectiveness is verified through the comparative experiments.

There exist two critical in application of the magnetic bearing system. One is the control axis interference caused by gyroscopic effect and the other is the vibration caused by the unbalance on the rotor. To solve both problems at the same time, first, a centralized full-state feedback controller based on the LQR control theory was designed to compensate for the gyroscopic effect. Second, disturbance rejection control input based on the observer was designed to avoid the vibration causer by the unbalanced rotor. Balancing input computer accroding to LQR and output of the observer were derived in term of rotational speed. Effectiveness of the on-line balancing was verified through numerical simulation. The developed observer-based controller was also applied to the linear and nonlinear magnetic bearing systems.
This paper deals with the development and application of control algorithms for series elastic relief robots for rescue operations in harsh environment like disasters or battlefield. The joint controller applied in this paper has a cascade structure combining inner loop for torque control and outer loop for position control. The torque loop contains feedforward and feedback controller and disturbance observer for independent, decentralized joint control. The effect of the elastic component and motor dynamics are treated as the nonlinear disturbance and compensated with the disturbance observer of torque controller. For the collision detection, Band Designed Disturbance Observer is configured to recognize/respond to external disturbance robustly in the continuously changing environment. The controller is applied to a 7-dof series elastic manipulator to evaluate the torque tracking and collision detection/response performance.
In this paper, a neural disturbance observer(NDO) is developed and its application to the control of a nonlinear system with the internal and/or external disturbances is presented. To construct the NDO, a parameter tuning method is proposed and shown to be useful in adjusting the parameters of the NDO. The tuning method employes the disturbance observation error to guarantee that the NDO monitors unknown disturbances. Each of the nodes of the hidden layer in the NDO network is a radial basis function(RBF). In addition, the relationships between the suggested NDO-based control and the conventional adaptive controls reported in the previous literatures are discussed. And it is shown in a rigorous manner that the disturbance observation error converges to a region of which size can be kept arbitrarily small. Finally, an example and some computer simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness and the applicability of the NDO.

A nonlinear speed control for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) using a simple disturbance estimation technique is presented. By using a feedback linearization scheme, the nonlinear motor model can be linearized in a controllable canonical form, and the desired speed dynamics can be obtained based on the linearized model. This technique, however, gives an undesirable output performance under the mismatch of the system parameters and load conditions. To cancel disturbance by parameter variation, the controller parameters will be estimated by using a disturbance observer theory where the disturbance torque and flux linkage are estimated. since only the two reduced order observers are used for the parameter estimations, the observer designs are considerably simple and the additional load for computation of the controller is negligibly small. The proposed control scheme is implemented on a PMSM using DSP TMS320C31 and the effectiveness is verified through the comparative simulations and experiments.
