  • In this paper, we propose optimal and suboptimal serial code acquisition schemes for chip-asynchronous direct-sequence spread-spectrum systems. The conventional serial code acquisition scheme is to compare each value of correlator outputs with a threshold individually. However, such a scheme is optimum only under the chip-synchronous assumption which is actually very difficult to be held prior to acquisition at the receiver because the signal-to-noise ratios before despreading are very low. In this paper, an optimal serial code acquisition scheme is derived based on the maximum-likelihood criterion under the more realistic and general chip-asynchronous environments. A suboptimal scheme, which is simpler but yields comparable performance to the optimal one, is also derived based on the criterion of local detection power Numerical results show that, under the chip-asynchronous environments, both the optimal and suboptimal serial code acquisition schemes outperform the conventional serial code acquisition scheme.

  • The 3-step cell search has been considered for fast acquisition of the scrambling code unique to a cell in the W -CDMA system. In this paper, the performance of the cell search scheme is analyzed in Rayleigh fading channels. And the system parameters for cell search scheme and the design parameters for the receivers are examined. The probabilities of detection, miss and false alarm for each step are derived in closed forms based on the statistics of CDMA noncoherent demodulator output. Through the analysis, the effect of threshold setting and post detection integration for each step is investigated, and the optimal values of the power allocation for the synchronization channels are also considered. The number of post-detection integrations for each step is a design parameter for the receiver, and the optimum values may depend on not only the power allocation for each channel related to the cell search, but the false alarm penalty time. It is shown that optimal values could be determined through the analysis. Also, the cumulative probability distribution of the average cell search time is obtained.

  • MultiCode-CDMA (MC-CDMA) system of chip level MPSK incorporating with clipper (MP-CDMA)[l] shows constant envelope signal which can mitigate the performance degradation due to nonlinear transmit amplifier. In this paper, modulation is modified to carry out differential encoded MPSK rather than MPSK. The modified system is called DMP-CDMA. DMP-CDMA using differential detection has advantages on receiver complexity and pilot overhead. However, it is inferior to coherent detection by about 4.0dB due to inherent power inefficiency of noncoherent detection and the error propagation. Multiple symbol differential detection is employed in order to improve DMP-CDMA using differential detection. As the result, the performance of DMP-CDMA system is improved about 3.6dB compared to differential detection.
