The purpose of this study was to find the extent of lipid peroxidation of erythrocytes in cigarette smokers, and to determine the relative effectiveness of $\beta$-carotene, canthaxanthin , and $\alpha$-tocopherol as antioxidants. Thirty smokers and 30 nonsmokers participated in this study . No significant differences according to age, sex, and height were shown. Cigarette smokers in this study had higher hemoglobin concentrations and more oxidation of hemoglobin than non-smokers. In addition, the erythrocytes of cigarette smokers had significantly higher MDA concentrations than crythrocytes of nonsmokers, which suggests that smokers may have tocopherol were studied in vitro by measuring the concentration of malondialdehyde(MDA) and precent hemolysis of erythrocytes. The addition of any antioxidant to erythrocytes significantly decreased MDA concentrations(p<0.05) while antioxidants showed nonsignificant inhibition of hemolysis. Among the antioxidant used in this study, canthaxanthin showed the greatest inhibition of both lipid peroxidationand hemolysis. Meanwhile, $\alpha$-tocopherol showed potent inhibition of lipid peroxidation, but not of hemolysis.

Background: The smoking prevalence in asthma patients are similar to those in the general population. Asthma and active cigarette smoking can interact to create more severe symptoms, an accelerated decline in lung function and impaired therapeutic responses. Accordingly, asthmatics with a history of smoking were examined to define the clinical characteristics and lung function of smoking asthmatics. Methods: The medical records of 142 asthmatics with a known smoking history were reviewed. The patients were divided into three groups according to their smoking history - current smokers, former smokers and non-smokers. The clinical characteristics, lung function, and annual declines of the forced expiratory volume in one second ($FEV_1$) were compared. Results: Fifty-three of the 142 patients (37%) were current smokers, 24 were former smokers (17%) and 65 were non-smokers (45%). The patients with a hospital admission history during the previous year included 16 current smokers (30%), 4 former smokers (17%) and 7 non-smokers (11%) (p=0.02). The mean $FEV_1$ (% predicted) was 76.8${\pm}$19.8%, 71.6${\pm}$21.1% and 87.9${\pm}$18.7% for current smokers, former smokers and non-smokers, respectively (p< 0.001). The $FEV_1$/forced vital capacity (FVC) (ratio, %) values were 63.6${\pm}$12.6%, 59.3${\pm}$14.9% and 72.1${\pm}$11.8% in current smokers, former smokers and non-smokers, respectively (p<0.001). The corresponding mean values for the individual $FEV_1$ slopes were not significant (p=0.33). Conclusion: Asthmatic smokers demonstrated higher hospital admission rates and lower lung function. These findings suggest that the smoking history is an important predictor of a poor clinical outcome in asthma patients.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of smoking on adult periodontitis after non-surgical periodontal therapy. The study population consisted of 40 patients with moderate to advanced periodontitis. Smokers(n=20) were defined as individuals smoking at least twenty cigarettes per day at the time of the initial examination. The non-smoking group(n=20) consisted of individuals who were not smoking at the initial examination. The average age was 42.4 years for the smoking and non-smoking group. Examination regarding plaque index, gingival index, pocket depth and contrast phase microscope were performed. Evaluation were made at the first, the second and the fourth weeks after periodontal non-surgical therapy. The results were as follows: 1. Clinical indices including plaque index, gingival index, and pocket depth were decreased in both smoking and non-smoking group at the first, the second, and the fourth weeks. Especially, clinical indices of non-smokers were more significantly decreased than those of smokers. 2. Non-motile rods were increased and motile rods were reduced at the fourth week. spirochetes were reduced significantly in the non-smoking group at the fourth week. These results suggest that smoking play a minor role in adult periodontitis after non-surgical periodontal therapy.
We examine the metabolites(DCB and acetyl DCB) extracted from exfoliated urothelial cells of 33 workers who employed DCB-handling industries. The characteristics of workers submitted urine, whose age, working years and smoking persons were 41.9$\pm$11.1, 8.7$\pm$5.5 and 25(32.0%), respectively. DNA adduct was isolated from the exfoliated urothelial cells by applying $^{32}$ p-postlabeling procedure. Metabolites(DCB and acetyl DCB) were extracted from DNA adducts by hydrolyzing and N-glycosylase. Concentrations of DCB and acetyl DCB were 28.6$\pm$5.25 ng/g DNA, and 17.0$\pm$3.73 ng/g DNA, respectively. The regression between DCB level and exposure years of workers is y = 1.668 + 2.588x(p = 0.005, $r^2$= 0.394). The regression between acetyl DCB level and exposure years of workers is y = 8.071 + 1.325x(p = 0.076, $r^2$= 0.222). Smoking workers are significantly higher than non-smoking workers on DCB and acetyl DCB level(p = 0.065 and 0.021, respectively). DCB level was 33.9$\pm$7.14 ng/g DNA on smokers, and 23.1$\pm$9.97 ng/g DNA on non-smokers. Acetyl DCB was 25.1$\pm$5.27 ng/g DNA on smokers, and 8.92$\pm$7.22 ng/g DNA on non-smokers.

PURPOSE: The purpose of present study was to investigate effects of obesity, blood pressure and life style on lipid indices and blood pressure in men of age 40s. METHODS: One hundred forty five subjects in men of age 40s were participated in this study. All participants were taken physical examination, lifestyle survey and laboratory test. According to examination, participants were divided into two group in four categories ; obesity and normal group, hypertension and normal group, smokers and non-smokers, and drinkers and non-drinkers. The low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were analyzed by independent t-test for comparison between two groups. RESULTS: The values of LDL, TC, SBP, DBP were higher and HDL was lower in obesity than in normal group (p<.05). The values of LDL, TC, SBP, DBP were higher in hypertension group than in normal group (p<.05). The values of TG was higher and HDL was lower in smokers than in non-smokers (p<.05). There's no significant differences between drinkers and non-drinkers (p>.05). CONCLUSION: It can be seen that obesity and blood pressure were more relative risk factors than smoking and alcohol indices in cardiovascular diseases.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the smoking behavior and to provide the basic data required to develop a smoking cessation program. The study subjects were 407 industrial workers in Jecheon. The data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed by the SPSS 10.0 system using descriptive statistics, t-test, and Chi-square test. The study results were as follows 1. Current smokers were $64.0\%$, ex-smokers were $19.1\%$. and non-smokers were $16.9\%$. 2. The most common motives of smoking were anger. anxiety, depression. and stress in the workplace. 3. In smoking habits, about $65.1\%$ of the current smokers smoked 11-20 cigarettes/day, and $91.0\%$ had smoked for more than 5 years. The smoking areas of the workplace were outdoor $37.9\%,\;rest\;room\;34.2\%,\; lobby\;23.0\%,\;corridor\;21.4\%,\;and\;office\;8.6\%$. 4. Regarding smoking cessation, $78.2\%$ of current smokers had attempted. The frequency of smoking cessation attempts was 1-3 or less in $67.2\%$ of smokers. The duration of smoking cessation was 1-3 month or less in $61.6\%$ of the smokers. 5. The mean score for smoking knowledge was 17.62, smoking attitude 75.74. and perceived health state 12.27. 6. There were significant differences between smokers and non-smokers 10 smoking attitude (t=5.29, p=0.00), and perceived health state(t=6.47, p=0.00). 7. As a result of the homogeneity test, both types of smoking and perceived health state proved to have significant differences in the change of health state compared with 4 weeks ago'$(x^2=20.26,\;p=0.00)$ and the level of satisfaction of health state in activities of daily living'$(x^2=15.47,\; p=0.05)$. The important findings of this study showed that a smoking cessation program needs to be developed to enhance the negative smoking attitude. to promote the perceived health state through smoking cessation, to encourage the intention of smoking cessation, and to develop strategies of stress management.
Few changes were found in the mouths of 52 smokers were examined as a part of program to evaluate the oral health of Korean smokers. 52 smokers and 30 non-smokers were performed careful oral examination. In many of smokers, heavy, black deposits are found on the buccal and lingual surfaces of the teeth and leukoplakia were obsreved in 2 subjects and varied merely in the severity of the involvement. Cytologic studies were carried out on 60 oral smears from the hard palate, buccal mucosa, and gingiva. Smears were taken wit a wood spatula scraped over the mucosal surface. After fixation the slides were stained using the papanicolau cells without nuclei. The cornified cells were smaller than the noncornified cells and stained a deep brown or orange as compared with the blue or red of the large, round or polygonal cells in nonkeratinized regions of oral mucosa. Abnormal cell forms, suggestive of malignancy were not found in smears from the mucosa of smokers. Cells with large hyperchromatic nuclei and elongated, spindle-type cells with large nuclei were not observed.
Aiming at reducing smoking population, Taiwan government adopted a successful smoking cessation quitline model from California Smokers' Helpline, commissioned a private non-profit organization-Teacher Chang Foundation, which was well-known for its quality telephone counseling service-to set up Asia's first quitline, Taiwan Smokers' Helpline (TSH) in 2003. The establishment of the quitline is a significant progress for tobacco control in Taiwan, as it built up a cooperative model with smoking cessation clinics to increase the quit rate through assisting smokers to overcome their psychological obstacles while quitting smoking.

The purpose of this study was to measure serum lipids concentrations by gender and age, and to investigated the relation of serum lipids levels to cigarette smoking alcohol intake exercise and menopausal status in Korean adults. The subjects consisted of 463 healthy adult(29- men and 173 women) volunteers who were visiting the health Promotion Center in the Asan Medical Center from July 1, 1994 to July 22, 1994 Subjects were ambulatory free-living people and aged 20- 80 years, Anthropometric measurement was performed and serum triglyceride(TG), HDL-cholesterol and total cholesterol(TChol) concentrations were measure by automatic system(Hitachi 736-40). Data on life styles were obtained using structured questionnaires issued by a trained interviewer, All data were statistically analyzed by PC-SAS(Version 6.04) Serum concentrations of triglyceride and total cholesterol was higher(p<0.05) in men than in women, and serum HDL-cholesterol was lower(p<0.05) in men than in women. The prevalence of hyperlipidemia(TG>170 mg/dL and TChol>220 mg /dL) was 12.5% in men and 4.1% in women. The levels of serum triglyceride, total cholesterol and BMI increased with age in women. The distribution curves of serum triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol of women were located in lower increased more rapidly with aging than in men, The distribution curves of BMI of women increased with aging after the thirties, The BMI of women was located in higher levels than of men in their sixties. The serum concentration of triglyceride and total cholesterol of male current-smokers and non- smokers were significantly(p<0.05) higher than those of ex-smokers. The concentrations triglyceride the male current0drinkers were higher(p<0.05) than those of male non-drinkers. In non-smokers and non- drinkers, serum TG concentration were lower (p<0.05) than those of current-smokers and current-drinkers. In exercisers, the serum triglyceride concentration was significantly(p<0.05) lower than in non- exercisers. In postmenopausal woman BMI and serum concentrations of TChol, TG and LDL-Chol were significantly by age and gender and smoking alcohol drinking, exercise and menopausal staus might be a better indicator to predict serum lipids in both genders.
