Second, the regression analysis showed that the factors affecting personality was different between multicultural and non-multicultural household adolescent in rural area. The scholastic performance(${\beta}=.23$), namely, affected most significantly the personality perceived by adolescent of multicultural household, and the immersing time in internet game per one day(${\beta}=-.27$), on the other hand, affected most significantly the personality perceived by adolescent of non-muticultural household. In conclusion, based on results of this study, several plans improving the personality of the rural multicultural and non-multicultural household adolescent were suggested.
The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of family support and participation in activities on the improvement in interpersonal relationships perceived by rural multicultural and non-multicultural household adolescents and compare the results with the perspective of Sullivan and Bowlby. For this purpose, the data of 403 persons from multicultural households and 348 persons from non-multicultural households were analyzed and several conclusions were drawn. Firstly, the family support variable had the greatest effect on the improvement in interpersonal relationships in both the rural multicultural and non-multicultural household adolescents. Secondly, the number of activities experienced at home significantly affected the improvement in interpersonal relationships in both types of adolescent. The effects of age, number of friends, and number of traditional activities on the improvement in interpersonal relationships differed for each type of household adolescent. And to conclude, the significant factors affecting the interpersonal relationships of the rural adolescents were their family and parents. Therefore, this study supports Bowlby's perspective on adolescents' interpersonal relationships. Based on the results, this study proposed plans to improve the interpersonal relationships of rural adolescents through family support and activity participation. Also, a plan for follow-up studies was suggested.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the factors related to depression between non-multicultural and multicultural middle school students. Methods: In this study, data were collected using structured questionnaires targeting students of 9 middle schools in G Province, Korea. Finally, the data of 304 students were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analyses using SPSS 24.0. Results: The multicultural students showed a higher depression score ($47.14{\pm}8.33$) than the counterpart ($44.22{\pm}8.11$) (p<.001). The results of the multiple regression analysis revealed that academic stress (${\beta}=.33$, p<.001), peer attachment (${\beta}=-.13$, p<.02), and body image (${\beta}=.25$, p<.001) were the influencing factors on depression in non-multicultural students. However, in multicultural students, depression was related to peer attachment (${\beta}=-.16$, p=.03) and self-esteem (${\beta}=-.42$, p<.001). Conclusion: To prevent and manage depression in non-multicultural middle school students, it is essential to help them relieve academic stress and build peer relationships and positive body image. For multicultural middle school students, helping them to have high self-esteem and peer attachment would be the first measure to prevent and manage depression.
Purpose: Growing evidence indicates that adolescents from multicultural families are more vulnerable to drug use than those from non-multicultural families. This study aimed to compare the factors associated with the habitual drug use among adolescents from multicultural and non-multicultural families. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed. Data were obtained from the 14~15th (2018~2019) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. Overall, 91,443 multicultural (n=1,725) and non-multicultural adolescents (n=89,718) were included. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, univariate analysis, and logistic regression analysis. Results: The multicultural adolescents engaged in more habitual drug use than did non-multicultural adolescents. In both groups, those who currently drank, experienced violent victimization, had sexual experiences, and did not live with their family were at greater risk of engaging in habitual drug use. The odds ratios of these factors were higher in multicultural adolescents than in non-multicultural adolescents. In non-multicultural adolescents, those who were boys, had experienced depression and suicidal ideation, perceived their body image as normal, overweight, or obese, and had poor subjective health status were at greater risk of engaging in habitual drug use. Conclusion: These results highlight the need to develop customized strategies for adolescents from both multicultural and non-multicultural families to reduce and prevent their habitual drug use.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare unsafe sex experiences of multicultural and non-multicultural adolescents. Methods: The study analyzed the data of 3,029 respondents who responded that they had sex in the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey of 2018. Weighted percentages and simple and multiple logistic regression were conducted using SAS 9.2. Results: As a result of univariate analysis, the odds ratio of unsafe sex was significantly higher in multicultural adolescents, but the difference between the two groups was not significant after controlling for the related variables. Among the covariates, the odds of unsafe sex were significantly higher in boys (AOR: 1.34; 95% CI: 1.08~1.66), those who did not live with their family (AOR: 1.68; 95% CI: 1.17~2.39), those with low academic achievement (AOR: 1.33; 95% CI: 1.02~1.73), binge drinkers (AOR: 1.61; 95% CI: 1.29~2.02), smokers (AOR: 1.37; 95% CI: 1.06~1.78), and those who did not receive sex education (AOR: 1.59; 95% CI: 1.20~2.11). Conclusion: There was no significant difference in unsafe sex experience between multicultural and non-multicultural adolescents. This study also shows the positive effect of school sex education on safe sex in teenagers. It is necessary to strengthen sex education for male students, students not living with their family, students with low academic achievement, binge drinkers, and smokers.
Objectives: To investigate factors related to scaling between Korean and multicultural families using data from the 18th Youth Health Behavior Survey (KYRBS), 38,320 Korean adolescents were selected as subjects. Methods: A complex sample cross-analysis was conducted on general characteristics and oral health characteristics using the IBM SPSS program. Factors related to adolescent scaling were analyzed using complex sample logistic regression analysis. Results: Compared to Korean families, adolescents from multicultural families had 0.50 times less scaling experience within 12 months. Learning achievement was 1.30 times higher in high compared to low, indicating that scaling experience was high. In terms of economic status, scaling experience was found to be high at 1.50 times in high compared to low. Non-smoking adolescents had 1.26 times higher scaling experience. It was found that adolescents who do not use dental floss and interdental brushes have 0.71 and 0.55 times less scaling experience, respectively. Conclusions: Based on the above results, there is a need to increase adolescents awareness of oral health and motivate them to manage their own oral care. There is a need to provide opportunities to participate in various oral health education programs and to deepen continuous oral health education on oral disease prevention.
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the oral symptoms experiences of Korean adolescents among multicultural families. Methods: Data on 985 participants from the 16th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey were collected and analyzed using complex sample descriptive statistics. Results: The foreign-born mother, foreign-born parents, and foreign-born father rates were 77.2%, 17.3%, and 5.4%, respectively. The toothache, gingival bleeding, tooth fracture, and tooth sensitivity experience rates were 21.3%, 18.8%, 13.3%, and 30.4%, respectively. The tooth fracture rate was highest in the foreign-born parents group (24.6%). The toothache odds ratio (OR) was 1.71 (95% CI: 1.24-2.37) times higher in girls. The foreign-born mother group was 2.47 (95% CI: 1.09-5.60) times higher than that of the foreign-born father or both parents foreign-born groups. The smoking group was 2.03 (95% CI: 1.20-3.43) times higher than that of the non-smoking group. The gingival bleeding OR was 5.11 (95% CI: 1.80-14.53) times higher in the lowest economic status group. The tooth fracture OR was 3.44 (95% CI: 1.01-11.70) times higher in the lowest economic status group. The tooth sensitivity OR was 1.53 (95% CI: 1.14-2.04) times higher in girls. Conclusions: It is necessary to establish a program to promote oral health of adolescents from multicultural families.
