In this paper, we present the equations of motion by which the natural vibration of a rotating annular disk can be accurately analyzed. These equations are derived from the theory of finite deformation and the principle of virtual work. The radial displacements of annular disk which is rotating at constant angular velocity are determined by non-linear equations formulated using 1-dimensional finite elements in radial direction. The equations of the in-plane vibrations at disturbed state are also formulated using 1-dimensional finite elements in radial direction along the number of nodal diameters. They are expressed as in functions of the radial displacements at the steady state and the disturbed displacements about the steady state. In-plane static deformation modes of the annular disk are used as the interpolation functions of 1-dimensional finite elements in radial direction. The natural vibrations of an annular disk with different boundary conditions are analyzed by using the presented model and the 3-dimensional finite element model to verify accuracy of the presented equations of motion. Its results are compared and discussed.

According to The Concrete Centre, in the UK shear walls have become an inseparable part of almost every reinforced concrete frame building. Recently, the construction industry has questioned the need for shear walls in low to mid-rise RC frame buildings. This study tried to address the issue in two stages: The first stage, the feasibility of removing shear walls in an existing design for a residential building where ETABS and CONCEPT software were used to investigate the structural performance and cost-effectiveness respectively. The second stage, the same structure was examined in various locations in the UK to investigate regional effects. This study demonstrated that the building without shear wall could provide adequate serviceability and strength within the safe range defined by Eurocodes. As a result, construction time, overall cost and required concrete volume are reduced which in turn enhance the sustainability of concrete construction.

In this study, we proposed the wire parallel mechanism that can be used to measure a full pose of a robot. It is composed of six parallel links using wire. The position and orientation of the end effectorf of a robot are calculated using the length of wires which is measured by the encoder. The complex non- linear equations of the forward kinematics are solved by using a numerical method, and the unique solution is obtained from the geometric configuration of the device. The length error of the wire which occurs in static condition is compensated by the relational equation that considered longitudinal extension and defoection of the wire. Through this work, we known that the proposed device has a good accuracy( .+-. 0.01mm) in a large measuring region, so it can be used effectively in a callibration of a robot which required a low cost.
The ground-structure interaction of the bridge foundation has been pointed out as a major factor influencing the behavior of the bridge during earthquakes. In this study, the effect of characteristics of ground and bridge foundation on the earthquake vulnerability is investigated. From the pseudo-static analysis, it is confirmed that non-linearity becomes lesser and horizontal load becomes greater when surcharge is considered. It is also found that as the ground worsens and the size of foundation decreases, horizontal load reduces. To derive reasonable structural model for bridge foundation, fragility curve is obtained considering four conditions (fixed condition, equivalent linear condition, non-linear without surchage condition, non-linear with surcharge condition) and compared. Seismic analysis is performed on single pier with Opensees. From the earthquake vulnerability analysis, it is found that shallow foundation can be assumed as fixed condition. In conservative approach, stiffness of spring can be obtained based on Korean highway bridge design code for pile foundation which can consider the ground condition.
This paper presents a theoretic model of a smart structure, a transversely isotropic piezoelectric thick square plate constructed with three laminas, piezoelectric-elastic-piezoelectric layer, by adopting the first order shear deformation plate theory and piezoelectric theory. This model assumes that the transverse displacements through thickness are linear, and the in-plane displacements in the mid-plane of the plate are not taken to be account. By using Fourier's series expansion, an exact Navier typed analytical solution for deflection and electric potential of the simply supported smart plate is obtained. The electric boundary conditions are being grounded along four vertical edges. The external voltage and non-external voltage applied on the surfaces of piezoelectric layers are all considered. The convergence of the present approach is carefully studied. Comparison studies are also made for verifying the accuracy and the applicability of the present method. Then some new results of the electric potentials and displacements are provided. Numerical results show that the electrostatic voltage is approximately linear in the thickness direction, while parabolic in the plate in-plane directions, for both the deflection and the electric voltage. These results are very useful for distributed sensing and finite element verification.

As the number of aging railway bridges in Korea increases, maintenance costs due to aging are increasing and continuous management is becoming more important. However, while the number of old facilities to be managed increases, there is a shortage of professional personnel capable of inspecting and diagnosing these old facilities. To solve these problems, this study presents an improved model that can detect Local damage to structures using machine learning techniques of AI technology. To construct a damage detection machine learning model, an analysis model of the bridge was set by referring to the design drawing of a non-ballasted plate-girder railroad bridge. Static strain data according to the damage scenario was extracted with the analysis model, and the Local damage index based on the reliability of the bridge was presented using statistical techniques. Damage was performed in a three-step process of identifying the damage existence, the damage location, and the damage severity. In the estimation of the damage severity, a linear regression model was additionally considered to detect random damage. Finally, the random damage location was estimated and verified using a machine learning-based damage detection classification learning model and a regression model.

This study was performed to evaluate the effect of Response modification factors (R-factor) in 3-, 9- and 20- story steel Moment Resisting Frame (MRF) buildings. Each structure was designed using a R-factor of 8, as tabulated in the 2000 International Building Code provision (IBC 2000) and Korea Building Code (KBC) 2008. In order to evaluate the maximum and minimum performance expected for such structures, an upper bound and lower bound design were adopted for each model. Next, each analytical model was designed using different R-factors (8, 9, 10, 11, 12) and four different structural periods with the original fundamental period. For a detailed case study, a total of 150 analytical models were subjected to 20 ground motions representing a hazard level with a 2% probability of being exceeded in 50 years. In order to evaluate the performance of the structures, static push-over and non-linear time history analysis (NTHA) were performed, and displacement ductility demand was investigated to consider the ductility capacity of the structures. The results show that the dynamic behaviors for the 3- and 9-story buildings are relatively stable and conservative, while the 20-story buildings show a large displacement ductility demand due to dynamic instability factors. (e.g. P-delta effect and high mode effect)
Long-span structures, such as bridges, can experience different seismic excitations at the supports due to spatially variability of ground motion. Regarding current bridge designing codes, it is just EC 2008 that suggested some regulations to consider it and in the other codes almost ignored while based on some previous studies it is found that the effect of mentioned issue could not be neglected. The current study aimed to perform a comprehensive study about the effect of spatially varying ground motions on the dynamic response of a reinforced concrete bridge under asynchronous input motions considering soil-structure interactions. The correlated ground motions were generated by an introduced method that contains all spatially varying components, and imposed on the supports of the finite element model under different load scenarios. Then the obtained results from uniform and non-uniform excitations were compared to each other. In addition, the effect of soil-structure interactions involved and the corresponding results compared to the previous results. Also, to better understand the seismic response of the bridge, the responses caused by pseudo-static components decompose from the total response. Finally, an incremental dynamic analysis was performed to survey the non-linear behavior of the bridge under assumed load scenarios. The outcomes revealed that the local site condition plays an important role and strongly amplifies the responses. Furthermore, it was found that a combination of wave-passage and strong incoherency severely affected the responses of the structure. Moreover, it has been found that the pseudo-static component's contribution increase with increasing incoherent parameters. In addition, regarding the soil condition was considered for the studied bridge, it was found that a combination of spatially varying ground motions and soil-structure interactions effects could make a very destructive scenarios like, pounding and unseating.
The goal of this paper is to apply the multi-step Taylor method to a space truss, a non-linear discrete dynamic system, and analyze the non-linear dynamic response and unstable behavior of the structures. The accurate solution based on an analytical approach is needed to deal with the inverse problem, or the dynamic instability of a space truss, because the governing equation has geometrical non-linearity. Therefore, the governing motion equations of the space truss were formulated by considering non-linearity, where an accurate analytical solution could be obtained using the Taylor method. To verify the accuracy of the applied method, an SDOF model was adopted, and the analysis using the Taylor method was compared with the result of the 4th order Runge-Kutta method. Moreover, the dynamic instability and buckling characteristics of the adopted model under step excitation was investigated. The result of the comparison between the two methods of analysis was well matched, and the investigation shows that the dynamic response and the attractors in the phase space can also delineate dynamic snapping under step excitation, and damping affects the displacement of the truss. The analysis shows that dynamic buckling occurs at approximately 77% and 83% of the static buckling in the undamped and damped systems, respectively.

Thickness profiled blank is designed using optimization techniques for maximizing the bulged heights during the free bulging of Inconel 718. The thickness of the blank was described by the Bezier curve and the locations of the control points were used as the design variables for optimization. The maximization of the bulged heights within the limited strain range served as the objective function and constraints for optimization. The equivalent static loads method for non-linear static response structural optimization (ESLSO) was used and the result of the optimization revealed 22 increased bulged heights. A free bulging test using a blank with an optimized profile was conducted to verify the optimization process. The results were compared with those of numerical analysis in terms of bulged height and deformed shape.
