  • Based on the linear model of electromagnetic suspension (EMS) system, it is able to be further simplified into a standard second-order model with a modified PD control. In this paper static and dynamic characteristics of EMS with modified PD control are investigated when suspended weight of steel plate change. A experimental system has been built to verify static and dynamic characteristics of EMS system. Simulation and experiment are both given.

  • Identification method is formulated to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of air bearings under NFR (Near Field Recording) sliders. Using dynamic analysis, impulse responses and frequency response functions of NFR sliders are obtained on numerical non-linear models including rigid motion of slider and fluid motion of air bearing under the slider. System parameters are identified by modal analysis method and instrumental variable method. The identified system parameters of sliders are utilized to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of air bearings.

  • The increasing application of power electronic equipment in industrial field has led to a growing concern for harmonic distortion and the resulting impacts on system equipment and operations. Harmonic currents are generated by the operation of nonlinear loads and equipment on the power system. These are more increased by unbalance voltage of electrical distribution power systems. This paper describes harmonics characteristics generated by varying of nonlinear load at the PCC under the voltage unbalance.

  • This paper deals with design and analysis of thrust magnetic bearing. Using the solutions obtained from equivalent magnetic circuit, we predict the electromagnetic characteristics such as thrust, time constant and power loss according to design parameters. And then, using non-linear finite element analysis, a detailed design is performed considering saturation in order to meet requirements.

  • The Hoek-Brown failure criterion for rock masses developed first in 1980 is widely accepted and has been applied in a variety of rock engineering problems including slope analyses. The failure criterion was modified over the years because rock mass strength by the original failure criterion in 1980 was overestimated. The modified failure criterion, named Generalized Hoek-Brown Failure Criterion, was proposed with a new classification called the Geological Strength Index(GSI) in 1994. Generally, Hoek-Brown failure criterion is applied in numerical analyses of rock mass behaviors using equivalent Mohr-Coulomb parameters estimated by linear regression method. But these parameters estimated by this method have some inaccuracies to be applied and to be incorporated into numerical models and limit equilibrium programs. The most important issue is that this method cannot take account of non-linear characteristics of Hoek-Brown criterion, therefore, equivalent Mohr-Coulomb parameters is used as constant values regardless of field stress distribution in rock masses. In this study, the numerical analysis on rock slope stability considering non-linear characteristics of Hoek-Brown failure criterion was carried out. Futhermore, by the latest Hoek-Brown failure criterion in 2002, the revised estimating method of equivalent Mohr-Coulomb parameters was applied and rock mass damage criterion is introduced to account for the strength reduction due to stress relaxation and blast damge in slope stability.

  • In general, seismic isolators which are made of laminated rubber and shim plate have characteristics of complex hysteretic behavior. When shear deformation of the seismic isolator is small, the isolator hassimple hysteretic almost bi-linear behabior. But on large shear deformation hardening effects may occur. This paper proposes a moldeling method of the seimic isolator with modified hysteretic bi-linear model which can consider the hardening effects. From the results of the seismic analyses of the isolated system it is shown that the responses are singificantly reduced compared with those of the non-isolated system. The modified hysteretic bi-linear model of the isolator gives larger ZPA(zero period acceleration) than those of the simple hysteretic bi-linear model and the equivalunt spring-damper model.

  • The implicit assumption of port selection studies based on survey and respondents' perceptions is that the preference of the port selection attributes is proportional to the selection behavior. Further, the straight lines of the port selection attributes could also have non-linear properties. This study confirms nonlinear characteristics of selection attributes by using Kano model. The findings of this study showed that several properties of carriers were evaluated as nonlinear characteristics, such as the intermodal links and network accessibility, and size of port and terminal. Hence, port service providers such as port authorities and terminal operating companiesl, should construct a port operation strategy that reflects the non-linear port selection characteristics of shipping companies. Since this study aimed at exploring the forms of port selection characteristics, long-term additional verification studies on ports and stakeholders at domestics and abroad were needed. The Kano model and importance-selection analysis method used for analysis and strategy establishment also need to be improved to capture evident characteristics and to present strategic guidelines.

  • The lateral bearing characteristics are important factors in the case of large diameter drilled shafts and the measures to increase this are to improve the adjacent ground of the pile to increase the rigidity and to increase the rigidity of the pile itself. There are many suggestions for increasing rigidity by reinforcing casing on the pile, but few studies have been done related to this. Therefore, in this study, the lateral bearing characteristics according to casing reinforcement length were studied for each ground condition using non-linear analysis to evaluate the appropriate casing reinforcement length of the large diameter drilled shafts depending on the ground conditions. As a result, the lateral bearing characteristics of the large diameter drilled shafts are most effective if the casing reinforcement length ratio is 1.2, and depending on the ground conditions, the more loose the ground, the greater the reinforcement effect.

  • The characteristics of $I_{\lambda}$-optimality, one of the linear criteria suggested by Fedorov (1972) are investigated with respect to the D-and heteroscedastic G-optimality in case of non-constant variance function. Though having limited results obtained from simple models, we may conclude that $I_{\lambda}$-optimality is sometimes preferred to the heteroscedastic G-optimality suggested newly bv Wong and Cook (1992) in the sense that the experimenter's belief in weighting function exists in $I_{\lambda}$-optimality criterion, not to mention its computational simplicity.
