In this paper, we propose an improved MPR selection method considering mobility and density of nodes for ad-hoc networks. In Optimized Link State Routing(OLSR), a node selects 1-hop Multi-Point Relay(MPR) nodes to cover all 2-hop neighbor nodes. In a high population area, many nodes are likely to be selected as MPR nodes by their neighbors. This leads to increase in contention among MPR nodes and may decrease overall performance of the network. In addition, when an MPR node leaves the communication range of its MPR selector node, it can no longer perform as the MPR node and the performance of the network may also decrease. In this paper, we propose an MPR selection method which measures the mobility and density of nodes by exchanging the hello messages and gives the priorities to the nodes for MPR selection. Performance evaluation results using OPNET show that the proposed method is superior to OLSR or the MPR candidate method in terms of connectivity and throughput.

Routing in mobile ad hoc networks is performed in a distributed fashion where each node acts as host and router, such that it forwards incoming packets for others without relying on a dedicated router. Nodes are mostly resource constraint and the users are usually inclined to conserve their resources and exhibit selfish behaviour by not contributing in the routing process. The trust and reputation models have been proposed to motivate selfish nodes for cooperation in the packet forwarding process. Nodes having bad trust or reputation are detected and secluded from the network, eventually. However, due to the lack of proper identity management and use of non-persistent identities in ad hoc networks, malicious nodes can pose various threats to these methods. For example, a malicious node can discard the bad reputed identity and enter into the system with another identity afresh, called whitewashing. Similarly, a malicious node may create more than one identity, called Sybil attack, for self-promotion, defame other nodes, and broadcast fake recommendations in the network. These identity-based attacks disrupt the overall detection of the reputation systems. In this paper, we propose a reputation-based scheme that detects selfish nodes and deters identity attacks. We address the issue in such a way that, for normal selfish nodes, it will become no longer advantageous to carry out a whitewash. Sybil attackers are also discouraged (i.e., on a single battery, they may create fewer identities). We design and analyse our rationale via game theory and evaluate our proposed reputation system using NS-2 simulator. The results obtained from the simulation demonstrate that our proposed technique considerably diminishes the throughput and utility of selfish nodes with a single identity and selfish nodes with multiple identities when compared to the benchmark scheme.

In this paper, we propose an efficient multichannel MAC protocol with idle nodes assistance to avoid the multi-channel hidden terminal problem in cognitive radio ad hoc network and further to improve the performance of the network. The proposed MAC protocol can be applied to the cognitive radio adhoc network where every node is equipped with the single transceiver and one common control channel exists for control message negotiation. In the proposed protocol, the idle nodes available in the neighbour of communication nodes are utilized because the idle nodes have the information about the channels being utilized in their transmission range. Whenever the nodes are negotiating for the channel, idle nodes can help the transmitting and receiving nodes to select the free data channel for data transfer. With the proposed scheme, we can minimize the hidden terminal problem and decrease the collision between the secondary users when selecting the channel for data transfer. As a result, the performance of the network is increased.
MANET is a network composed itself because mobile nodes are connected wirelessly. It has been applied to various fields for group communication. However, the dynamic topology by the movement of the nodes causes routing failure frequently because it is difficult to maintain the position information of the nodes participating in the group communication. Also, it has a problem that network performance is decreased due to high overhead for managing information of member nodes. In this paper, we propose a multicast technique using location-based 2-tier virtual group that is flexible and reliable in management of member nodes. The network is composed of cellular zones and the virtual group is constructed using the location information of the nodes in the proposed technique. The virtual group management node is selected to minimize the overhead of location information management for member nodes in the virtual group. In order to improve the reliability for management of member nodes and multicast data transmission, it excludes the gateway node with low transfer rate when setting the route after the packet transmission rate of the member nodes is measured. The excellent performance of the proposed technique can be confirmed through comparative experiments with AMroute method and PAST-DM method.

In this paper, we propose an optimal placement of sensor nodes with 2.4GHz wireless channel characteristics. The proposed method determines optimal transmission range based on log-normal path loss model, and optimal number of sensor nodes calculating the density of sensor nodes. For the lossless data transmission, we search the optimal locations with self-organizing feature maps(SOM) using transmission range, and number of sensor nodes. We demonstrate that optimal transmission range is 20m, and optimal number of sensor nodes is 8. We performed simulations on the searching for optimal locations and confirmed the link condition of sensor nodes.

Location information of sensor nodes plays a critical role in many wireless sensor network (WSN) applications and protocols. Although many localization algorithms have been proposed in recent years, they usually target at dense networks and perform poorly in sparse networks. In this paper, we propose two component-based localization algorithms that can localize many more nodes in sparse networks than the state-of-the-art solution. We first develop the Basic Common nodes-based Localization Algorithm, namely BCLA, which uses both common nodes and measured distances between adjacent components to merge components. BCLA outperforms CALL, the state-of-the-art component-based localization algorithm that uses only distance measurements to merge components. In order to further improve the performance of BCLA, we further exploit the angular information among nodes to merge components, and propose the Component-based Localization with Angle and Distance information algorithm, namely CLAD. We prove the merging conditions for BCLA and CLAD, and evaluate their performance through extensive simulations. Simulations results show that, CLAD can locate more than 90 percent of nodes in a sparse network with average node degree 7.5, while CALL can locate only 78 percent of nodes in the same scenario.

Localization of nodes is a key technology for application of wireless sensor network. Having a GPS receiver on every sensor node is costly. In the past, several approaches, including range-based and range-free, have been proposed to calculate positions for randomly deployed sensor nodes. Most of them use some special nodes, called anchor nodes, which are assumed to know their own locations. Other sensors compute their locations based on the information provided by these anchor nodes. This paper uses a single mobile anchor node to move in the sensing field and broadcast its current position periodically. We provide a weighted centroid localization algorithm that uses coefficients, which are decided by the influence of mobile anchor node to unknown nodes, to prompt localization accuracy. We also suggest a criterion which is used to select mobile anchor node which involve in computing the position of nodes for improving localization accuracy. Weighted centroid localization algorithm is simple, and no communication is needed while locating. The localization accuracy of weighted centroid localization algorithm is better than maximum likelihood estimation which is used very often. It can be applied to many applications.
In the h-type adaptive analysis, when an element is refined or subdivided, new nodes are added. Among them are the transition nodes which are the corner nodes of the new elements formed by subdivision and, simultaneously, the mid-side nodes of the adjacent non-subdivided elements. To secure displacement compatibility, the slave-node approach in which the DOFs of a transition node are constrained by those of the adjacent nodes had been used. Alternatively, transition elements which possess the transition nodes as active mid-side/-face nodes can be used. For C0 plate analyses, the conventional slave-node constraints and the previously derived ANS transition elements are implemented. In both implementations, the four-node element is the ANS element. With reference to the predictions of the transition elements, the slave-node approach not only delivers erroneous results but also fails the patch test. In this paper, the patch test failure is resolved by developing a set of new constraints with which the slave-node approach surpasses the transition-element approach. The accuracy of the slave-node approach is further improved by developing a hybrid four-node element in which the assumed moment and shear force modes are in strict equilibrium.

Overlay routing has emerged as a promising approach to improve reliability and efficiency of the Internet. The key to overlay routing is the placement and maintenance of the overlay infrastructure, especially, the selection and placement of key relay nodes. Spurred by the observation that a few relay nodes with high betweenness centrality can provide more optimal routes for a large number of node pairs, we propose a resilient routing overlay network construction method by introducing Super-Relay nodes. In detail, we present the K-Minimum Spanning Tree with Super-Relay nodes algorithm (SR-KMST), in which we focus on the selection and connection of Super-Relay nodes to optimize the routing quality in a resilient and scalable manner. For the simultaneous path failures between the default physical path and the overlay backup path, we also address the selection of recovery path. The objective is to select a proper one-hop recovery path with minimum cost in path probing and measurement. Simulations based on a real ISP network and a synthetic Internet topology show that our approach can provide high-quality overlay routing service, while achieving good robustness.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are composed of a large number of sensor nodes. Battery-powered sensor nodes have limited coverage; therefore, it is more efficient to transmit data via multi-hop communication. The network lifetime is a crucial issue in WSNs and the multi-hop routing protocol should be designed to prolong the network lifetime. Prolonging the network lifetime can be achieved by minimizing the power consumed by the nodes, as well as by balancing the power consumption among the nodes. A power imbalance can reduce the network lifetime even if several nodes have sufficient (battery) power. In this paper, we propose a routing protocol that prolongs the network lifetime by balancing the power consumption among the nodes. To improve the balance of power consumption and improve the network lifetime, the proposed routing scheme adaptively controls the transmission range using a power control according to the residual power in the nodes. We developed a routing simulator to evaluate the performance of the proposed routing protocol. The simulation results show that the proposed routing scheme increases power balancing and improves the network lifetime.
