The effects of noble gas (such as helium, neon, argon, krypton, and xenon) on the sonolytic decomposition of water and 2-methyl-2-propanol(t-butanol) with 200 KHz high power ultrasound were investigated. The physical properties of the noble gas have an effect on the formation rate of products $(H_2O_2,\;H_2,\;O_2)$ and the decomposition rate on the sonolytic decomposition of water. The pyrolysis products, such as methane, ethane, ethylene, and acetylene are formed during the sonolytic decomposition of t-butanol. From the estimation of the ratio $[C_2H_4+C_2H_2] / [C_2H_6]$, the cavitation temperature would be varied by the used noble gas. In all cases for the sonolytic decomposition of water, t-butanol, and diethyl phthalate, the decomposition rates were xenon > krypton > argon > neon > helium with a significant difference and were closely correlated with the formation rate of OH radical and high temperature inside the cavitation bubble under each noble gas.
Water gas shift(WGS) is an important step in fuel process for fuel cells, and improperness of commercial WGS catalysts for use in fuel cell systems has prompted numerous researches on noble metal catalysts. A selected noble metal catalyst for water gas shift reaction(WGS) was prepared with various metal loadings. The prepared catalysts were tested under two feeding conditions. At moderate residence time, carbon monoxide conversion was much higher on the noble metal catalysts as compared to commercial high-temperature shift catalyst. Effects of metal loading were examined by activity tests at short residence time. Higher metal loading effected higher reaction rate. The kinetic data was fitted to simple reaction equations and effectiveness factor was estimated. The results suggest the necessity of a structural design for the highly active noble metal catalysts.

As a green and abundant source of energy, H2 has attracted the attention of researchers for use in different applications. Nevertheless, it is highly flammable, and because of its significantly small size, extreme attention is needed to detect its leakage. In this review, we discuss different effects of noble metals on the H2 gas response and performance of metal oxide-based gas sensors. In this regard, we discuss the effects of noble metals, in combination with metal oxides, on H2 gas detection. The catalytic activity towards H2 gas and the formation of heterojunctions with metal oxides are the main contributions of noble metals to the sensing improvement of H2 gas sensors. Furthermore, in the special case of Pd and somewhat Pt, the formation of PdHx and PtHx also affects the H2 sensing performance. This review paper provides useful information for researchers working in the field of H2 gas detection.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the noble gas isotope and the hydrochemical characteristics of hot springs in the Chungcheong area in Korea. This study was carried. out by the financial support of Korea-Japan joint research program of KOSEF, Noble gases are very useful tracers to investigate volatile elements circulation, because of their unique isotopic compositions in various reservoirs of the Earth. Isotopic ratios of noble gases has been carried out for If hot-spring samples from Daejon and its near areas in Korea last January 2004. Helium isotope ratio gave the evidence that helium gas of different origins(air-crust mixing origin, crust-origin and mantle-origin) is supplied into hot-spring waters in Korea. We found the distinct relationship between temperature of hot springs and helium gas origin.
Water gas shift reactor in fuel processing is an important part that converts carbon monoxide into hydrogen. Fuel processing system for PEMFC usually has two stages of WGS reactors, which are high temperature and low temperature shifter. In this study we prepared noble metal catalysts and compared their performances with that of a commercial iron chromium oxide catalyst. Noble metal catalysts and the commercial catalyst showed quite different temperature dependence of carbon monoxide conversion. The conversion of carbon monoxide at the commercial catalyst was very low at medium temperature(${\sim}300^{\circ}C$) and increased rapidly as temperature increased while the conversion at noble metal catalysts was high in the medium temperature range and decreased as temperature increased, which is thermodynamically expected. Their characteristics agreed well with the literature published, and we are accomplishing further study for improvement of the noble metal catalysts.
Hydrogen (H2) is considered as a new clean energy resource for replacing petroleum because it produces only H2O after the combustion process. However, owing to its explosive nature, it is extremely important to detect H2 gas in the ambient atmosphere. This has triggered the development of H2 gas sensors. 2-dimensional (2D) graphene has emerged as one of the most promising candidates for chemical sensors in various industries. In particular, graphene exhibits outstanding potential in chemoresistive gas sensors for the detection of diverse harmful gases and the control of indoor air quality. Graphene-based chemoresistive gas sensors have attracted tremendous attention owing to their promising properties such as room temperature operation, effective gas adsorption, and high flexibility and transparency. Pristine graphene exhibits good sensitivity to NO2 gas at room temperature and relatively low sensitivity to H2 gas. Thus, research to control the selectivity of graphene gas sensors and improve the sensitivity to H2 gas has been performed. Noble metal decoration and metal oxide decoration on the surface of graphene are the most favored approaches for effectively controlling the selectivity of graphene gas sensors. Herein, we introduce several strategies that enhance the sensitivity of graphene gas sensors to H2 gas.

A model for calculation of fuel temperature profile using binary gas mixture of Helium and Xenon for gap gas conductance is proposed here. In this model, the temperature profile of a fuel pencil from fuel centreline to fuel surface has been calculated by taking into account the dilution of Helium gas filled during fuel manufacturing due to accumulation of fission gas Xenon. In this model an explicit calculation of gap gas conductance of binary gas mixture of Helium and Xenon has been carried out. A computer code Fuel Characteristics Calculator (FCCAL) is developed for the model. The phenomena modelled by FCCAL takes into account heat conduction through the fuel pellet, heat transfer from pellet surface to the cladding through the gap gas and heat transfer from cladding to coolant. The binary noble gas mixture model used in FCCAL is an improvement over the parametric model of Lassmann and Pazdera. The results obtained from the code FCCAL is used for fuel temperature calculation in 3-D neutron diffusion solver for the coolant outlet temperature of the core at steady operation at full power. It is found that there is an improvement in calculation time without compromising accuracy with FCCAL.

Noble gases, which are chemically inert and behave conservatively in marine environments, have been used as tracers of physical processes such as air-sea gas exchange, mixing of water masses, and distribution of glacial meltwater in the ocean. For precise measurements of Ne, Ar, and Kr, we developed a mass spectrometric system consisting of a quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS), a high vacuum preparation line, an activated charcoal cryogenic trap (ACC), and a set of isotope standard gases. The high vacuum line consists of three sections: (1) a sample extraction section that extracts the dissolved gases in the sample and mixes them with the standard gases, (2) a gas preparation section that removes reactive gases using getters and separates the noble gases according to their evaporation points with the ACC, and (3) a gas analysis section that measures concentrations of each noble gas. The ACC attached to the gas preparation section markedly lowered the partial pressures of Ar and CO2 in the QMS, which resulted in a reduced uncertainty of Ne isotope analysis. The isotope standard gases were prepared by mixing 22Ne, 36Ar, and 86Kr. The amounts of each element in the mixed standard gases were determined by the reverse isotope dilution method with repeated measurements of the atmosphere. The analytical system achieved precisions for Ne, Ar, and Kr concentrations of 0.7%, 0.7%, and 0.4%, respectively. The accuracies confirmed by the analyses of air-equilibrated water were 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.7% for Ne, Ar, and Kr, respectively.

In this paper, the ionization characteristics of noble gases are studied numerically behind strong shock waves. As a first step, the equilibrium ionization mechanism of noble gases is modeled in wide ranges of temperature and pressure. As a next step the equilibrium ionization model is coupled with fluid dynamic equations to analyze the local thermodynamic equilibrium(LTE) ionization process at high temperature and pressure conditions behind the strong imploding shock waves. The ionization characteristics of xenon gas is studied in a wide range of test conditions with thermal radiation effects. Hence, the results give optimal conditions of maximum ionization and radiation behind the imploding shock waves.
