The distribution of organic nitrogen and its decomposition rate were studied in the Youngsan River and the Sumjin River system in Korea. Samples were conducted seasonally in June, August, December of 2006, and February of 2007. Collected samples were incubated for 20 days in a dark chamber ($20{\pm}1^{\circ}C$) and analyzed the changes of nitrogen form (particulate organic nitrogen, dissolved organic nitrogen, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate). The mean total nitrogen (TN) concentration in the Youngsan River and the Sumjin River were $2.62mgN{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and $1.53mgN{\cdot}L^{-1}$, respectively. TN comprised of 65% DIN and 35% ON. The decomposition coefficients of organic nitrogen were also determined by two different fitting models. The decomposition rates of nitrogen species (TON, LPON, LDON, ${NH_4}^+$ and ${NO_2}^-$) ranged from 0.024 to $1.043day^{-1}$ in the Youngsan River and 0.008 to $0.693day^{-1}$ in the Sumjin River, respectively. The result of this study can give a guide to the selection of parameters in the calibration processes of water quality models.

In this paper, analytical studies were conducted to obtain optimal design factors and analysis parameters of liquid nitrogen cooling exchanger applied in cryogenic refrigerator. The target value of heat transfer rate was more than 1 kW and pressure drop was less than 40 kPa. Design factors of cryogenic heat exchanger included width of channel and configuration of paths. Analytical factors of liquid nitrogen cooling exchanger included temperatures of coolant header surface and inlet liquid nitrogen. The width and number of channels in the design parameters were 0.0050~0.0150 m and 4~8, respectively. The configuration of channel path was 4 ways. Temperatures of coolant header surface and inlet liquid nitrogen in analytical parameters were 74 to 78K and 82 to 86K, respectively. As result, the design factor and analysis parameter satisfying the target values were obtained. The biggest heat transfer rate was 1.36 kW with pressure drop of 32.26 kPa.
The effluent discharge standards of industrial wastewater has become more stringent since 2003. Many industrial wastewater treatment plants has been upgraded to advanced treatment facilities. There are high concentrations of nitrate(>200 mg/L) and ammonium(>50 mg/L) nitrogen in the acrylic fiber wastewater of H textile Co. Wastewater from acrylic fiber industry containing acrylonitrile, which may affect the subsequent biological treatment process. Manufacturing of acrylic fiber also produces shock loadings. Excessive acrylonitrile and polymer debris produced in the polymerization process was screened, coagulated with CaO and settled down. A preaeration system was added to treat this high pH effluent to remove volatile organic compound and ammonia nitrogen by the air stripping effect. it was found that nitrification rate was not sufficient in the Anoxic/Oxic(AO) process. One denitrification tank was converted to nitrification reactor to extend HRT of nitrification. Nitrification rate of ammonia nitrogen was promoted from 32% to 67% by this modification and effluent nitrogen concentration was well satisfied with the effluent standards since then.
A sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR) operated with a cycle of anaerobic - aerobic - anoxic - aerobic has been evaluated for the nutrient removal characteristics. The sponge-like moving media was filled to about 10% of reactor volume. The sewage was the major substrate while external synthetic carbon substrate was added to the anoxic stage to enhance the nitrogen removal. The operational results indicated that maximum T-N and T-P removal efficiencies were 97% and 94%, respectively were achieved, while COD removal of 92%. The observations of significant nitrogen removal in the first aerobic stage indicated that nitrogen removal behaviour in this SBBR was different to conventional SBR. Although the reasons for aerobic nitrogen removal has speculated to either simultaneous nitrification and denitrification or anoxic denitrification inside of the media, further researches are required to confirm the observation. The specific oxygen uptake rate (SOUR) test with biofilm and suspended growth sludge indicated that biofilm in SBBR played a major role to remove substrates.
Chrysanthemum boreale M. (hereafter, C. boreale M.), a perennial flower, has been historically used as a natural medicine in Korea. With increasing concerns for health-improving foods, the demand for C. boreale M. has become higher than ever. Howevr, the amount of wild C. boreale M. collected from mountainous areas is not enough to cover all demands. The cultivation system and fertilization strategy are required to meet increasing demand on C. boreale M. with a good quality. We investigated the effects of nitrogen application on plant growth and effective components of C. boreale M. to suggest optimum rate of nitrogen fertilization. C. boreale M. was cultivated in a pot scale (1/2000a scale), and nitrogen applied with rate of 0(N0), 50(N50), 100(N100), 150(N150), 200(N200), and $250(N250)kg\;ha^{-1}$. Phosphate and potassium were applied at the same level ($P_2O_5-K_2O=80-80kg\;ha^{-1}$) in all treatments. Maximum yield achieved in 246 and $226kg\;ha^{-1}$ N treatment on the whole plant and the flower part, a valuable part as a herbal medicine, respectively. Proline was the most abundant amino acid in the flower of C boreal M. and the contents of amino acids increased with increasing nitrogen application rate in flower. Nitrogen recovery efficiency was high more than 41% in all nitrogen treatments and increased to 61.8% in nitrogen N100 treatment. From the nitrogen content, the high nitrogen uptake, the low residue of mineral N and the reasonably good apparent fertilizer recovery, it can be inferred that C. boreale M. made efficient use of the available nitrogen. In flower, contents of Cumambrin A. which is a sesquiterpene compound and has the effect of blood-pressure reduction, decreased with increasing nitrogen application. However, the amount of Cumambrin A in flower increased as nitrogen rate increased, because of increasing flower yield. Conclusively, nitrogen fertilization could increase yields and enhance quality. The optimum nitrogen application rate might be on the range of $225{\sim}250kg\;ha^{-1}$ in a mountainous soil.
Milking center wastewater (MCW) has a relatively low ratio of carbon to nitrogen (C/N ratio), which should be separately managed from livestock manure due to the negative impacts of manure nutrients and harmful effects on down-stream in the livestock manure process with respect to the microbial growth. Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) is linked to inhibition of the second nitrification and reduces around 40% of the carbonaceous energy available for denitrification. Thus, this study was conducted to find the optimal operational conditions for the treatment of MCW using an attached-growth biofilm reactor; i.e., nitrogen loading rate (NLR) of 0.14, 0.28, 0.43, and $0.58kg\;m^{-3}\;d^{-1}$ and aeration rate of 0.06, 0.12, and $0.24\;m^3\;h^{-1}$ were evaluated and the comparison of air-diffuser position between one-third and bottom of the reactor was conducted. Four sand packed-bed reactors with the effective volume of 2.5 L were prepared and initially an air-diffuser was placed at one third from the bottom of the reactor. After the adaptation period of 2 weeks, SND was observed at all four reactors and the optimal NLR of $0.45kg\;m^{-3}\;d^{-1}$ was found as a threshold value to obtain higher nitrogen removal efficiency. Dissolved oxygen (DO) as one of key operational conditions was measured during the experiment and the reactor with an aeration rate of $0.12\;m^3\;h^{-1}$ showed the best performance of $NH_4-N$ removal and the higher total nitrogen removal efficiency through SND with appropriate DO level of ${\sim}0.5\;mg\;DO\;L^{-1}$. The air-diffuser position at one third from the bottom of the reactor resulted in better nitrogen removal than at the bottom position. Consequently, nitrogen in MCW with a low C/N ratio of 2.15 was successfully removed without the addition of external carbon sources.
This study was conducted to find out the optimum nitrogen fertilization for production of good quality and high yield zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.), the changes in chemical properties of soil in pot and field experiments treated with different levels of nitrogen fertilizer. In pot experiment, the fresh and dry weights of shoots and stolons and the number of shoots increased as nitrogen levels increased, and showed no significant between 24 and $48kg\;N\;10\;a^{-1}$. In field experiment, the shoot length, fresh and dry weights of shoots, roots and stolons, the number of shoots and total stolons length linearly increased as affected by increased nitrogen application, and were not significantly different between 24 and $32kg\;N\;10\;a^{-1}$. In both experiments, pH and exchangeable cations ($Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$) in soil decreased as the rate of nitrogen application increased. As a results, chemical properties of soil were more deteriorated in the plots of higher nitrogen fertilizer rate. Thus, these results demonstrated that the nitrogen fertilizer rate for maximum growth of zoysiagrass was $24kg\;N\;10\;a^{-1}$ in consideration of growth and soil condition.
This study was done with mouse embryos to determine effects of the freezing media with or without 10% sucrose, and seeding methods (pincette, no seeding, liquid nitrogen gas phase and copper wire coiled straw) on embryo survival were determined using the FDA test. The summarized results are the following. 1. The FDA score found with copper wire coiled straw, no seeding, pincette and liquid nitrogen gas phase was 3.6, 3.6, 3.3 and 3.0, respectively. There were no significant differences. 2. The embryo score shows higher (P<0.05) survival rate using a freezing medium with sucrose than the one without it. Among the seeding procedure, better resutls are copper wire coiled straw and no seeded. 3. The results suggest that copper wire coiled seeding no seeding be as good as seeding when the mouse embryos were frozen in a liquid nitrogen container using both the freezing and dilution media containing 10% sucrose.

The ion implantation technology is generally used in order to improve surface mechanical properties, especially tribological properties, of engineering metals. In this study, experimental works were carried out to investigate the surface properties, such as hardness, wear quantity, wear rate and friction force, of a nitrogen ion implanted tool steel STD11 under dry condition. Specimens for the wear test were made to investigate the influences of the initial ion implantation temperature and the total ion radiation. Wear properties, such as the wear quantity and the wear rate, of the nitrogen ion implanted tool steel were considerably improved, especially under the low sliding speed and the low applied load.
Biological nutrient removal(BNR) from wastewater was performed by adopting various process configurations. The simultaneous biological organics, phosphorus and nitrogen removal of synthetic wastewater was investigated in a sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR). The other reactor was operating as a reference, without biofilm being added. The cycling time in SBR and SBBR was adjusted at 12 hours and then certainly included anaerobic and aerobic conditions. Both systems has been operated with a stable total organic carbon(TOC), nitrogen and phosphorus removal performance for over 90 days. Average removal efficiencies of TOC and total nitrogen were 83% and 95%, respectively. The nitrification rate in SBR was higher than that in SBBR. On the contrary, the denitrification rate in SBBR was higher than that in SBR. The phosphorus release was occurred in SBBR, however, not in SBR because of the inhibition effect of NO$_3$$^{[-10]}$ .
