  • The cells obtained from diesel contaminated site were tested for diesel degradation by culturing them on the culture medium that contained diesel as the only carbon source. Two strains that grew well in the culture media were separated: one formed white colony and another strain formed yellow colony. When they were cultured together, much higher diesel degradation was obtained compares to that of individual cell culture. Mixed culture of white and yellow colony forming strains grew well with 1%(v/v) diesel and the addition of growth nutrients increased the diesel degradation. Additional nitrogen source was efficient for higher diesel degradation (over 90%) when it was compared with that without nitrogen source. When mixed culture of white and yellow colony forming cells were applied to the soil column system contaminated by diesel, 30 mL/min of air flow rate was found to be sufficient to degrade diesel oil. The diesel degradation did not increase noticeably at higher flow rate. The addition of nitrogen source resulted in the increase in diesel degradability.

  • Three dimensional numerical study was carried out to investigate the effect of aspect ratio on microchannel flow. We considered five straight rectangular channels with aspect ratios (height/width) 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0. Nitrogen gas flow was investigated for both slip and noslip wall boundary conditions. Isothermal wall condition was assumed. We used control volume method for this simulation. The slip velocity increases with the increase of aspect ratio. Friction coefficient decreases with the increase of aspect ratio. Slip friction coefficient is lower than noslip friction coefficient. Mass flow rate of slip model is higher than that of noslip model. We compared our results with the experimental result reported in the literature. The agreement was good.

  • A two-phase numerical model for plate-fin heat exchangers with plain fins and wave fins is studied incorporating the thermodynamic properties and the characteristics of fluid flow. The numerical simulations for the two fins in cryogenic conditions are earned out by employing a homogenous two-phase flow model with the CFD code ANSYS CFX. The heat transfer coefficients and the friction factor for nitrogen saturated vapor condensation process inside two types of plate fin heat exchanger are evaluated including the effects of saturation temperature (pressure), mass flow rate and inlet vapor quantity. The convective heat transfer coefficients and friction factors will be used for design of plate-fin type heat exchangers operating under cryogenic conditions.

  • Stress behavior was studied to investigate the internal behaviors of boron, carbon, and nitrogen in the 1000${\AA}$-thick tungsten boron carbon nitride (W-B-C-N) thin films. The impurities in the W-B-C-N thin films provide stuffing effects that were very effective for preventing the interdiffusion between interconnection metal and silicon substrate during the subsequent high temperature annealing process. The resistivity of W-B-C-N thin film decreases as an annealing temperature increase. The W-B-C-N thin films have compressive stress, and the stress value decreased up to $4.11\times10^{10}dyne/cm^2$ as an $N_2$ flow rate increases up to 3 sccm.

  • The evolution of radioiodine 131I from a sodium peroxide system as a function of time, temperature, and carrier gas (nitrogen) flow rate was studied. Virtually no iodine was volatilized at 25$0^{\circ}C$ and a very small amount, of the order of 10$^{-3}$ % per flour, at 63$0^{\circ}C$. Substantially greater amounts of iodine were volatilized at 7$25^{\circ}C$ and 83$0^{\circ}C$. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that the mechanism of transfer is distillation of sodium iodide, and that elemental iodine is not produced in this system.

  • A gas chromatographic method using nitrogen phosphorous selective detection was developed for simultaneous determination of haloperidol and its metabolite, reduced haloperidol, in human plasma. Combelen was used as internal standard, The method involved extraction and trimethylsilylation followed by the injection of $2-4\;{\mu}l$ of benzene layer, which was used to dissolve the trimethylsilylated derivatives of haloperidol and reduced haloperidol, onto SE-54 column [5% phenyl methyl silica fused capillary column, $16m{\times}0.22\;mm$ $(I.D.){\times}0.33\;{\mu}m$ (coated thickness)]. The temperature of column oven was programmed from $200^{\circ}C\;to\;300^{\circ}C$ at the increase rate of $10^{\circ}C/min and also the temperatures of injector and detector were set at $300^{\circ}C$. Helium was used as carrier gas and its flow rate was maintained at 30 ml/min. The detection was conducted with nitrogen phosphorous selective detector. The retention times for combelen, reduced haloperidol and haloperidol were found to be 9.14, 9.75 and 9.99 min, respectively. The detection limits for haloperidol and reduced haloperidol in human plasma were both 0.2 ng/ml. The coefficients of variation of the intra-assay were generally low (below 9.8%). The mean absolute recoveries of added haloperidol and reduced haloperidol from plasma were 72% and 84%, respectively. No interferences from endogenous substances were found.

  • The concentration breakthrough curves were examined to predict mass transfer coefficients of nitrogen and oxygen in adsorption column for design data of PSA process. Experimental breakthrough curves for bulk gas flow were compared with theoretical simulation results. For quantitative analysis of the adsorption, coupled Langmuir isotherm was considered and LDF model was used to describe the mass transfer effect. In the experimental and theoretical results, it was found that mass transfer coefficient was not affected by flow rate but strongly affected by pressure. As a result of this tendency, mass transfer resistance in this system was proved to belong to the macropore diffusion controlling region and the mass transfer coefficients could be expressed by exponential functions of pressure change. The mass transfer coefficients for one component, nitrogen or oxygen, were successfully applied to breakthrough curves for bulk mixed gases. The experimental curves were reasonably in consistent with the theoretical curves and the error time was less than 5 percent.

  • In the RH process, it is possible to obtain quicker processing times by enhancing the decarburization rates at a low carbon range of steel melt through Ar gas injection into the vacuum vessel. The RH decarburization reaction was simulated through a dissolved oxygen removal reaction by injecting nitrogen into a 1/8 scale RH water model system. The gas nozzles for the N$_{2}$ injection into the vacuum vessel were located at the lowest level of the vessel's outer wall. The nitrogen bubbling in the vacuum vessel resulted in an increase in the reaction rate constant, which rose in accordance with an increase in the bubbling flow rate and number of nozzles used. However, there was almost no variation in the reaction rate constant, which depended on the horizontal positions of the bubbling nozzles.

  • A new wastewater treatment system was developed to remove nitrate nitrogen and phosphorus in synthetic wastewater through electrochemical treatment. Higher removal efficiencies of nitrate nitrogen were obtained as the current density increased. Higher nitrate removal efficiencies were obtained when the switching interval was 1 min. The total phosphorus removal rate according to the current density was found to be over 90% without being greatly affected by the change in current density and interval, and the total removal rate increased with increasing switching time (1 min interval). On the other hand, COD was not treated by electrochemical treatment, but rather increased as the electrode eluted. Also, the consumption rate of the electrode was smaller as the switching interval was shorter. Finally, removal efficiencies of 98.1% of nitrate and 90% of phosphorus were obtained through electrochemical treatment (current density $50mA/cm^2$, switching interval 1 min, flow rate 540 mL/min).

  • Because of the limitation of controllable operation variables for the wastewater treatment process with variable hydrodynamic flow patterns, it may preclude the use of this type of nutrient removal activated sludge process. As the operation variables, only temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) have been used to operate the process. This study made an effort to improve treatment efficiency and operability of the process by the following methodologies: 1) process and operation data analysis using process simulation, 2) determination of optimal control logic or algorithm using a pilot-scaled experimental apparatus and its operations, and 3) application of experimental and simulation results to find the optimal process operation modes. In this study, it was found that the optimal operation mode named 'save mode' in the basis of process variables, such as the ammonia-nitrogen concentration of inlet flow, temperature and flow rate, can reduce the operation cost comparing with the present normal operation mode. And the stable conditions in nitrification were also shown by the proportional control of DO with the inlet air flow rate of blower and the mixing rate of mechanical aeration.
