  • There have been several problems in treating shipboard sewage due to special environmental conditions of ship, such as limited space, rolling and pitching, change of temperature and so on. It was suggested that Sequence Batch Reactor (SBR) might be suitable process for overcome these problems in terms of small size, high capacity of treating wastewater and full automation. In this study a SBR process was employed for biological treatment of organic wastes in the shipboard sewage. This process was able to remove nitrogen and phosphorus as well as organic matter efficiently. More than 95% of chemical oxygen demand(COD) were removed. In addition, about 97% of total nitrogen (T-N) was reduced. The total phosphorus(T-P) reduction averaged 93%. A disturbance operation caused by the treatment of Methylene Blue Active Substances(MBAS) was not observed.

  • The main purpose of this study was to estimate the role of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) released from sediment and denitrification process in sediment on the nitrogen budget of Hiroshima Bay by means of collecting data on distributions and budgets of nitrogen and phosphorus in the bay, DIN fluxes across sediment-water interface and denitrification rates in the sediments of the same area. The TN : TP and DIN:DIP atomic ratios of the discharged freshwater were about 26 and 21, respectively. The standing stocks in the seawater of the TN : TP atomic ratio varied from 8 to 14 with an annual mean value of 11, while the DIN : DIP atomic ratio varied from 10 to 15 with an annual mean value of 12 in the bay. The residence time of nitrogen and phosphorus were estimated to be about 109 days and 200 days in the bay, respectively. The proportion of DIN released from sediment and denitrification rate to the loading of total nitrogen into Hiroshima Bay were $45\%\;(37\~82\%)\;and\;13\%(0.0\~37\%)$, respectively, and the amount of nitrogen through denitrification process was 6.5 times larger than the outflow of nitrogen from the bay. The results show that DIN released from sediment and denitrification process in sediment play important roles on the nitrogen budget in Hiroshima Bay.

  • A study on the metabolism of the chemical companents of endosperm and enbryonic othans of ginseng seeds during their germination were inverstigated and the results of the changes in the contents of nitrogen conponds, carbohydrates, lipids and phosphorus conpounds are summarized as follow; 1. When a seeding grows to 5cm the fresh weight of the embryonic organ incerases 13 times compared with that of its ripened embryo veore germination and its dry weight increases 4.5 times. On the other hand, about 65% of the dry weight of the endosperm is lost. 2. During germinarion the total nitrogen content of a sedding (endosperm+embryonic organ) decreases and when the seeding grows to 5cm there is a loss of 10% of total nitrogen content. At this time, soluble nitrogen content amounts to 40~50% of the total nitrogen, a comparatively high content. 3. When theseeding grows to 5cm, the total phosphorus content decreases by 15%. During the germination period 70~75% of the total phosphorus is distributed in the embryonic orang and 25% of it is in endosperm. In the embryonic organ 35~50% of the acid soluble phosphorus is inorganic phosphorus and in the endisperm, 20~25% of the acid soluble phosphorus is inorganic phosphorus,75~80% of the organic phosphorus is contained in the endosperm. 4.One the seedling grew to 2~3cm, carbohydrates such as soluble sugars, reducong sugars, nonreducong sugars, and crude starch interconverted remarkably. 5.After stratification (just before germination) the lipid content of the endosperm is about 54% of the total weight and lipid content of the embryo is about 61%. During germination 6.81mg of the fat contained in the endosperm per seed decreases to 4.13mg while the change of fat content in the embryonic organ is not so great.

  • Simultaneous removal of phosphorus and nitrogen from wastewater was studied by the anaerobic-aerobic system of activated sludge. In the anaerobic stage, most of the influent glucose was removed and orthophosphate was released, when the nitrate and/or nitrite concentration in the wastewater was almost zero. The amount of the released phosphorus was found to be directly proportional to the amount of the removed glucose. When the ratio of phosphorus to glucose in the influent was less than 0.04, the phosphorus in the wastewater was almost completely removed during the aerobic state. Under the anaerobic condition, activated sludge released phosphate and excess removal of phosphate occurred during the aerobic condition. Namely, the stress received in anaerobic period stimulated the uptake of phosphorus in aerobic period. The amounts of phosphorus release in the anaerobic and uptake in the aerobic stage were less in proportional to the concentration of $NO_x-N$. Further, if the initial ratio of $NO_2-N$/glucose was less than 0.37, the inorganic nitrogen in the influent could be completely removed.

  • In this research, single-, two- and four-stage intermittently aerated activated sludge system were investigated for simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus with swine wastewater. For the comparison of removal efficiency, conventional activated sludge system was operated. Operational conditions of intermittently aerated activated sludge system were SRT 20day, HRT 24hr and aeration/nonaeration time 1hr/1hr, respectively. Nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency in Intermittently aerated activated sludge system was upgraded compare with conventional activated sludge system. In single-stage intermittently aerated activated sludge system, release-uptake of $PO_4^{3-}-P$ was observed very well but, phosphosrus removal in effluent was not effective. In single-stage intermittently aerated activated sludge system, release-uptake of $PO_4^{3-}-P$ in first reactor, was observed very well but, in following reactor, $PO_4^{3-}-P$ concentation showed almost no change. T-N removal efficiency in conventional activated sludge system, single-, two-, and four-stage intermittently aerated activated sludge system were 48, 87, 90.9 and 95.5%, respectively, and phosphorus removal efficiency were 48, 75, 97 and 95%, respectively. Intermittently aerated activated sludge system as a alternative processes of conventional system leads to meet satisfactory effleunt with only on/off aeration regulation and save energy for aeration.

  • Two successive in vitro experiments were carried out to examine the effect of MPS bacterial inoculation on growth, and nitrogen and phosphorus accumulation of maize plants under greenhouse condition in the same soil. There were four treatments, uninoculated control and three phosphate solubilizing bacterial inoculations, viz., Pseudomonas striata, Burkholderia cepacia and Serratia marcescens. The inoculated plants showed the higher plant height, total dry mass, nitrogen and phosphorus accumulation when compared to uninoculated control plants in both experiments. In the combined data analysis from two experiments, the plants inoculated with P. striata and B. cepacia showed significantly higher plant height, total dry mass and P accumulation when compared to S. marcescens inoculated plant and uninoculated control plants. The P. striata and B. cepacia inoculation enhanced total dry matter accumulation by 14% and phosphorus accumulation by 25% over the uninoculated control plants. The nitrogen and phosphorus concentration of maize plants were also increased due to MPS bacterial inoculation, however, the effect was not significant.

  • This study was performed to increase the removal efficiency of the biofilter packed with granular sulfur in municipal wastewater reclamation facility. Constituent units were influent water tank, denitrification tank, BOD reduction tank and outlet. And, the major operation factor is a biofilter packed with submerged granular sulfur. Actual wastewater and synthetic wastewater were used as influent wastewater. Experimental condition was divided into two phases according to the amount of a phosphorus coagulant. Total phosphorus removal efficiency was insignificant at mode I that phosphorus coagulant was not injected. The average influent and effluent total phosphorus concentrations at mode II were 0.5 ~ 1.0 mg/L and 0.27 mg/L, respectively. As for COD and BOD effluent concentrations, COD was 3.0 mg/L and BOD was 1.0 mg/L. Additionally, nitrogen removal rates were high at low influent DO concentration. In conclusion, a new process, biofilter packed with granular sulfur is expected to treat high-rate nitrogen wastewater and expected to be utilized as an alternative of technological innovation for the nitrogen treatment.

  • This study was carried out to develop INSUB(Indirected Aerated Submerged Biofilter) which can remove organics, nitrogen and phosphorus with an advanced treatment system. The results were as followed in laboratory model experiment. As for treatment of sewage, when economical efficiency was considered in practice, the highest removal efficiency was at 18hr of HRT, 1.017m/hr of superficial velocity and 40% of media packing ratio. Each removal efficiency for $COD_{cr}$, $COD_{Mn}$, $BOD_5$, T-N, and T-P was 90.6, 85.3, 95.0, 52.3 and 56.8%. To remove the nitrogen and phosphorus With high efficiency, first of all, denitrification have to be completed, then uptake of phosphorus have to completed. Therefor, mixture of anoxic and aerobic reactor was necessary for the high removal efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus in INSUB.
