As the concentration of ammonium nitrogen could be reached 2~3 mg/L in the winter in the river. It was clear that the excessive concentration of chlorinated organics could be produced with the increase of chlorine addition to remove ammonium nitrogen. In the innovative ammonium nitrogen removal process, zeolite adsorption is very efficient as substitute for rapid sand filtration without other adverse quality change in the water. This study is conducted to evaluate the feasibility of ammonium nitrogen removal and regeneration by zeolite adsorption in drinking water treatment. Also, the reuse possibility of zeolite is evaluated to change the removal efficiency of ammonium nitrogen through several times of regeneration. The ammonium nitrogen was not removed in sand filter, but it was almost removed in zeolite filter during 7 days. The sand and zeolite filters have a similar result of turbidity removal. Therefore, zeolite filtration was confirmed the removal of turbidity and ammonium nitrogen as a media. When compared KCl with NaCl as a chemical for zeolite regeneration, it is demonstrated that KCl was more efficient than NaCl in the ability of zeolite regeneration. The adsorption rate of ammonium nitrogen was almost not decreased in the results of several times of regeneration. It is indicated that both zeolite and regeneration solution were possible to reuse without variation of regeneration rate through this study.
Two in vivo experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of novel urease inhibitor hydroquinone (HQ) on ammonia release rate from urea hydrolysis, nitrogen balance, nutrient digestibility and efficiency of microbial protein synthesis. In Exp. 1, twelve crossbred cannulated lambs were randomly assigned within initial body weight block to one of four HQ treatments, which included 0 (control), 30, 60 or 80 mg HQ/kg DM intake. Ammonia concentration and pH of ruminal fluid were immediately measured at 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 h after feeding. Increasing the dose of HQ tended (p<0.15) to linearly decrease NH3 formation. The ammonia peak concentration (2 h post-feeding) in animals receiving HQ was approximately one-half of that in animals not receiving HQ (p<0.01), and a relatively sustained ammonia release could be obtained at the dose of 30 or 60 mg HQ/kg DM. In Exp. 2, sixteen intact crossbred lambs (weight $40{\pm}0.8kg$) were used in a $2{\times}2$ factorial design experiment. The four rations consisting of soybean meal-based (SBM) or urea-based (Urea) nitrogen source with or without HQ (S1, S0, U1 and U0) were fed in digestion and N balance trials. Apparent digestibility of major nutrients except that of ADF was not affected by either nitrogen source or addition of HQ. Regardless of nitrogen source, supplementation of HQ significantly improved ADF digestibility (p<0.05). The various ration had no effects on N metabolism in the presence of HQ. There was significant difference between total purine derivatives (PD), estimated efficiency of microbial N synthesis (p<0.05) and urea-N excretion (p<0.01) in the urine for the SBM ration and for the Urea ration. However, HQ had little influence on efficiency of microbial N synthesis as proportion of daily intake of total tract digestible OM (p>0.05). No interactions between main nitrogen source and HQ were measured throughout the trial. Results of this study suggest that addition of HQ to ration may improve ADF digestion with having no negative effect on N metabolism and microbial protein production.

There are differences in opinion as to whether nitrogen fertilizer should be used when establishing alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). Various reports show that under a hot environment, rhizobia (Rhizobium meliloti) are not as effective in fixing atmospheric nitrogen as they are under moderate temperatures. It is also believed that the addition of nitrogen fertilizer inhibits nodulation of alfalfa seedlings. A replicated experiment was conducted under controlled environmental conditions at the University of Nevada-Reno, Reno, Nevada, USA, to determine the effects of nitrogen application on seedling growth and nodulation of alfalfa grown in a hot environment. Sterile sand was used as the growing media to which a complete nutrient solution minus nitrogen was applied volumetrically to each pot daily. In addition, half of the pots received NH4-$NO_3$, at the rate of 11.2 kg per ha at seeding and at two and four weeks after planting giving a total nitrogen application rate of 33.6 kg per ha during the seven-week experimental period. Rhizobia inoculant (R-12) consisted of a mixture of strains 171-15a, 1682c and 80 PI 265 of (Rhizobium meliloti). Inoculant was applied to the seeds prior to planting and to the sand media at two and four weeks after seeding. Twenty seeds were planted in pots 14.0 cm in diameter and 11.5 cm deep. Plants were thinned to ten plants per pot after emergence and were grown in a controlled environment chamber with a 16-hour light period. Soil temperature at 6 cm depth ranged from 17.4^{\circ}C.$ to 31.1^{\circ}C.$ and had a daily mean of 26.5^{\circ}C.$. Plants were harvested at weekly intervals for seven weeks. Root, shoot and total length, dry weight, volume and number of nodules per plant were determined. Root, shoot, and total length were greater in seedlings grown in soil where nigrogen was applied than that grown in soil to which no nitrogen was applied. The average size of the seedlings as determined by volume and weight was more than two times greater where plants were fertilized with nitrogen. Nodule number per seedling was also greater when nitrogen was applied compared to those which received no nitrogen. The differences were greater as the plants became older. The rhizobia did not fix enough nitrogen for adequate growth of seedlings. This is probably due to high temperature growing conditions that caused the rhizobia to become relatively ineffective as compared to cooler growing conditions. Data suggests it would be desirable to apply nitrogen at seeding when alfalfa is established under hot conditions that occur in mid- or late summer.
In order to gain a better understanding of how forests participate in the cycling of carbon, effects of nitrogen addition on soil respiration were investigated on the oak forest in Kongju, Korea. Study site was divided into control, treatment f and treatment 2 plots, with 5 replication in each plot. In each replicate of treatment 1 and treatment 2 were fertilized with ammonium nitrate (NH$_4$NO$_3$), 30 g/$m^2$ and 60 g/$m^2$, respectively. Soil respiration, soil temperature, ammonium-N and nitrate-N were measured during the experimental period. Ammonium-N and nitrate-N in Ta were higher than those in control and T$_1$. Ammonium-N and nitrate-N in top-soil and sub-soil decreased sharply in August after bi9 rainfall in July in T$_1$ and T$_2$, however, those in control plot increased. Soil respiration in T$_2$ Plot showed consistently higher than those in control and T$_1$ until the end of July. However, soil respiration was similar among the control, T$_1$ and T$_2$ in mid-August and September The amount of Co$_2$ released from soil respiration in control, T$_1$ and T$_2$ in mid-August was 8.0$\pm$0.4, 9.3$\pm$0.6 and 10.2$\pm$0.5 $\mu$mol$^{-1}$ ㆍm$^{-2}$ ㆍs$^{-1}$ , respectively. However, those in control, T$_1$ and T$_2$in mid-August was 13.0$\pm$0.4, 13.5$\pm$0.5, 13.3$\pm$0.6 $\mu$mol$^{-1}$ ㆍm$^{-2}$ ㆍ$^{-1}$ , respectively. The results suggest that nitrogen addition in this oak forest has a positive effect on soil respiration.
Spirulina platensis NIES 39 was grown in effluents from a wastewater treatment plant utilizing activated sludge process at a pig farm to reduce pollutants and to produce feed resources. The addition of 2 g/l NaCl was required for the growth of S. platensis in the effluents with about 100 mg/l ammonia nitrogen concentration. The growth was stimulated by the addition of 2 g/l sodium bicarbonate and 4 mg/l ferrous sulfate. The microorganism grew well at pH 8~11, and the optimum pH for the growth was 10. The algal concentration of 1.1 g/l was attained after 8 days of growth at the optimum condition with the removal of 95% ammonia nitrogen and 34% phosphorus.
For the cost-effective biological nitrogen removal (BNR) process whose characteristics of influent have low COD/N ratios, the automatic control system for the addition of external carbon based on oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) data in an anoxic reactor has been developed. In this study, it was carried out with a pilot-scale Bardenpho process which was consisted of anoxic 1, aerobic 1, aerobic 2, anoxic 2, aerobic 3 tank and clarifier. Firstly, the correlation coefficient ($R^2$) of the dosage of external carbon source and ORP value was about 0.97. Consequently, the automatic control system using ORP showed that the dosage of external carbon source was decreased by about 20% compared with a stable dosage of 75 mg/L based on the COD/N ratio of the anoxic influent.
High nitrogen-bearing stainless steel (HNS) containing more than Imass% N was successfully created by means of pressurized electro-slag remelting (P-ESR) without the addition of manganese. Excellent localized corrosion resistant properties of the HNS were confirmed in terms of pitting and crevice corrosion in artificial seawater. The repassivation kinetics proved higher repassivation rate for HNS.
The rate constants for the nucleophilic addition of potassium cyanide to α,N-diphenylnitrone and its derivatives (p-OCH3, p-CH3, p-Cl, and p-NO2) were determined by ultraviolet spectrophotometer at 25℃, and the rate equations which can be applied over a wide pH range were obtained. On the basis of pH-rate profile, adduct analysis, general base catalysis and substituent effect, a plausible mechanism of this addition reaction was proposed: At high pH, the cyanide ion to carbon-nitrogen double bond was rate controlling, however, in acidic media, the reaction proceeded by the addition of hydrogen cyanide molecule to carbon-nitrogen double bond after protonation at oxygen of a,N-diphenylnitrone. In the range of neutral pH, these two reactions occured competitively.
A field experiment was conducted to find out the effects of nitrogen and potassium rates on the chemical constituents and physical properties of burley tobacco (1988; Burley 21. 1989; Burley 21 and KB 101) during successive two years. KB 101 was low in total nitrogen and total alkaloid contents and potassium/total nitrogen ratio of cured leaf. but high in the lightness, red and yellow color and filling power, comparing to Burley 21. The increasing rates of total nitrogen and total alkaloid contents were larger when nitrogen applied to 22.75kg/10a, but they were smaller when nitrogen applied above 22.75 kg/l0a. The potassium content, potassium/total nitrogen ratio, filling power and shatter resistance index of cured leaf were decreased by nitrogen fertilizer addition. The potassium content and shatter resistance index were increased by potassium fertilizer addition. The effect of nitrogen rate on the potassium/total nitrogen ratio of cured leaf was larger than the effect of potassium rate. When the nitrogen fertilizer being applied above 22.75 kg/l0a, there were no advantageous effects on the chemical and physical properties. It is considered to be sufficient that the potassium application is about 35.0 kg/l0a.
Autotrophic nitrogen removal and its microbial community from a laboratory scale upflow anaerobic sludge bed reactor were characterized with dynamic behavior of nitrogen removal and sequencing result of molecular technique (DNA extraction, PCR and amplification of 16S rDNA), respectively. In the experiment treating inorganic wastewater, the anaerobic granular sludge from a full-scale UASB reactor treating industrial wastewater was inoculated as seed biomass. The operating results revealed that an addition of hydroxylamine would result in lithoautotrophic ammonium oxidation to nitrite/nitrate, and also hydrazine would play an important role for the success of sustainable nitrogen removal process. Total N and ammonium removal of 48% and 92% was observed, corresponding to nitrogen conversion of 0.023 g N/L-d. The reddish brown-colored granular sludge with a diameter of $1{\sim}2\;mm$ was observed at the lower part of sludge bed. The microbial characterization suggests that an anoxic ammonium oxidizer and an anoxic denitrifying autotrophic nitrifier contribute mainly to the nitrogen removal in the reactor. The results revealed the feasibility on development of high performance lithoautotrophic nitrogen removal process with its microbial granulation.
