low grade leaves of flue-cured (N.C. 2326) and air-cured (Br 21) have been heated at $140^{\circ}C$ for 10 and 20 minutes, respectively. As heating duration increased, each contents of nicotine, total nitrogen, total sugar and free amino acid decreased in both leaves. The result obtained from this experiment are as following 1. Nicotine content decreased in both leaves. Heating for 10 and 20 minutes showed respectively nicotine decrease of 13.2% and 21.6% for Br 21 and 8.2% and 13.2% for N.C.2326. Decrease of total nitrogen and total sugar was inversely proportional to the heating duration. N.C. 2326 in the decrease out numbered Br.21 by the ratio 2: 1 for 10min.-heating, and 5:4 for 20 min.-heating. 3. Total free amino acid was decrease by 17.1% and 13.85 for N.C. 2326 and Br 21, respectively when heated for 10 min., and 25.6% and 26.5% respectively when heated for 20 min. When sucrose was added to Br 21, th decrease ratio of total free amino acid of Br.21 was increased. It is suggested that the addition of sucrose could promote the browning reaction in Br 21 leaves.
We describe plant biomass in the grasslands of the Mongolian steppe obtained using a quadrat sampling technique. Four sites were studied in the northeastern Mongolia located between $47^{\circ}12'N$ and $47^{\circ}40'N$ and $102^{\circ}22'E$ and $112^{\circ}24'E$, which were typical grasslands of the steppe. Biomass, carbon and nitrogen content were determined for the plants collected from the grazed and ungarazed stands. With the measurements above, we expect to obtain information on grazing effects on the grasslands and carbon sequestration of the grassland from the air. In order to estimate the biomass without destroying the stands, we derived an equation to describe the relationship between plant biomass and v-value using plant height and species coverage within the stand. Estimated plant biomass in the ungrazed and grazed stands ranged between $108.0\;g\;m^{-2}$ and $13.4\;g\;m^{-2}$ and between $97.5\;g\;m^{-2}$ and $14.1\;g\;m^{-2}$ in late June 2005, respectively. Litter in the ungrazed and grazed stands ranged from $330.3\;g\;m^{-2}$ to $78.4\;g\;m^{-2}$ and from $188.0\;g\;m^{-2}$ to $20.3\;g\;m^{-2}$, similarly. Average carbon and nitrogen contents in plants and in litter were 43.0% and 1.9% and 33.7% and 1.4%, respectively. In study sites at Baganuur, the carbon and nitrogen content of plant materials (plant plus litter) was $118.4\;g\;m^{-2}$ and $4.7\;g\;m^{-2}$ on 30 June 2005.

18 boreholes with nitrate contaminated were selected. Samples were collected 4 times between both 1995 and 1996. Stable nitrogen isotope ratio for them all was measured and the contribution to contamination from several sources like fertilizer, sewage, cropland. and landfill was analysed. Nitrogen source for 11 sampling sites of T-3, L-1. O-1∼O-4, F-2∼F-5, and G-2 considered to come from chemical fertilizer and its contribution was around 60% or more. T-4. T-5 were located downward the downtown, which were influenced bydomestic sewage and its contribution were 70.7% and 54.7%. Nitrate concentration of G-2 was 17.7 mg/L, among which 60.7% was estimated to come from landfill leachate. T-1 and T-2 were located in the small village, in which 42.2 and 43.4% of nitrogen was to come from domestic sewage but 52.8% and 56.0% were from fertilizer sprayed in the cropland. L-2 was near livestock by which it was estimated to be influenced, in which 59.9% of nitrogen was from cropland. F-1 was in the cropland, by which 50.0% was influenced and 49.5% was estimated from organic matter of animals.
The present study has numerically investigated the effects of the oxidizer-side nitrogen dilution on the precise structure and NOx formation characteristics of the turbulent syngas nonpremixed flames. Eulerian particle flamelet model was used to predicted the NOx formation characteristics in the turbulent syngas swirling nonpremixed flames. Current numerical simulation was conducted for the syngas gas turbine combustor. Numericla results indicate that as the H2O portion is increased in diluent, the formation of NOx decreased effectively in turbulent syngas swirl nonpremixed flames.
Some microorganisms including yeasts produce surface tension-decreasing biosurfactants. The strain G-1, the best producer of biosurfatants was isolated from the soil and identified as Rhodotorula sp., which was not discribed any report. The Rhodotorula sp. G-1 produced biosurfactant from vegetable oils, but failed to produce it from n-alkane or carbohydrate. Yeast extract was found to be more effective for the biosurfactant production as nitrogen source than any other inorganic nitrogen source. The composion of the optimal medium contained the following conponents: soybean oil 4%, glucose 2%, yeast extract 0.5%, KH$^{2}$PO$^{4}$ 0.1%, K$^{2}$HP0$^{4}$ 0.l%, MgSO$^{4}$ 5%, CaCl$^{2}$ 0.01%, NaCl 0.01%, pH 6.0. The surface tension activity was increased to 14% when, at first, the culture broth was fermented with only soybean oil as carbon sourse, and after 90 hours, feeded glucose, than that Of glucose and soybean oil added to it simultaneously. The maxium yield of the biosurfactant was about 15 g/l by after 90 hours, the feeding method of glucose.
This study was carried out to examine the nitrogen removal rate of a subsurface-flow treatment wetland system which was constructed on floodplain of the Kwangju River from May to June 2001. Its dimensions were 29m in length, 9m in width and 0.65m in depth. A bottom layer of 45cm in depth was filled with crushed granite with about $15{\sim}30\;mm$ in diameter and a middle layer of 10cm in depth had pea pebbles with about 10 mm in diameter. An upper layer of 5 cm in depth contained course sand. Reeds (Phragmites australis) were transplanted on the surface of the system. They were dug out of natural wetlands and stems were cut at about 40 cm height from their bottom ends. Water of the Kwangju River flowed into it via a pipe by gravity flow and its effluent was funneled back into the river. The height of reed stems was 44.2 cm in July 2001 and 75.3cm in September 2001. The number of stems was increased from $80\;stems/m^2$ in July 2001 to $136\;stems/m^2$ in September 2001. Volume and water quality of inflow and outflow were analyzed from July 2001 through December 2001. Inflow and outflow averaged 40.0 and $39.2\;m^3/day$, respectively. Hydraulic detention time was about 1.5 days. Average nitrogen uptake by reeds was $69.31\;N\;mg/m^2/day$. Removal rate of $NO_3-N$, $NH_3-N$, T-N averaged 195.58, 53.65, and $628.44\;mg/m^2/day$, respectively. Changes of $NO_3-N$ and $NH_3-N$ abatement rates were closely related to those of wetland temperatures. The lower removal rate of nitrogen species compared with that of subsurface-flow wetlands operating in North America could be attributed to the initial stage of the system and inclusion of two cold months into the six-month monitoring period. Increase of standing density of reeds within a few years will develop both root zones suitable for the nitrification of ammonia and surface layer substrates beneficial to the denitrification of nitrates into nitrogen gases, which may lead to increment in the nitrogen retention rate.
The growth characteristics of Spirulina platensis were investigated using four photo-bioreactors with $CO_2$-mixed air flows. Each reactor was operated under a specific condition: 3% $CO_2$ at 50 mL/min, 3% $CO_2$ at 150 mL/min, 6% $CO_2$ at 50 mL/min, and 6% CO2 at 150 mL/min. The 3% $CO_2$ at 150 mL/min condition produced the highest algal growth rate, while the 6% $CO_2$ at 150 mL/min conditioned produced the lowest. The algal growth performance was suitably assessed by the linear growth curve rather than the exponential growth. The medium pH decreased from 9.5 to 8.7-8.8 (3% $CO_2$) and 8.4-8.5 (6% $CO_2$), of which trends were predicted only by the pH-carbonate equilibrium and the reaction kinetics between dissolved $CO_2$ and $HCO_3{^-}$. Based on the stoichiometry between the nutrient amounts and cell elements, it was predicted that depleted nitrogen (N) at the early stage of the cultivation would reduce the algal growth rates due to nutrient starvation. In this study, use of the photobioreactors capable of good light energy distribution, proper ranges of $CO_2$ in bubbles and medium pH facilitated production of high amounts of algal biomass despite N limitation.
Yield response of tomato to nitrogen and potassium fertilizer and the balance of the two elements were determined in salt-accumulated greenhouse soil to improve the efficiency of fertilizer appiication. The response of tomato yield to nitrogen and potassium fertilizer application was not significant. The current parameters such as OM and $K/{\sqrt{Ca+Mg}}$ that were used to determine the level of nitrogen and potassium fertilizer in open field were not suitable in salt-accumulated greenhouse soil condition. The temporal and spatial distribution of $NO_3{^-}-N$showed the same pattern to those of $Cl^-$ ion that is non-reactive with soil, while the content of Ex. K was extraordinarily high in soil after harvesting of tomato, which had experienced relatively dry condition during harvesting time. The loss of $NO_3{^-}-N$ and Ex. K out of 28cm below the soil surface was 2~5 and 1.5~3.5 times greater than the amount of nitrogen and potassium uptake by the plant.

This study aims to assess the effectiveness of activated carbon (AC) and crushed concrete (CC) as capping material to block the release of nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic substance from reservoir sediments. The efficiency of AC and CC as capping material was evaluated in a reactor in which a 1 or 3 cm thick layer of capping materials was placed on the sediments collected from Mansu reservoir in Anseong-city. Dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, total nitrogen (T-N), total phosphorus (T-P), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration in reservoir water above the uncapped sediments and capping material were monitored for 45 days. The release rate of T-N was in the following increasing order: AC 3 cm ($1.18mg/m^2{\cdot}d$) < CC 1 cm ($2.66mg/m^2{\cdot}d$) < AC 1 cm ($2.94mg/m^2{\cdot}d$) < CC 3 cm ($3.42mg/m^2{\cdot}d$) < uncapped ($4.59mg/m^2{\cdot}d$). The release rate of T-P was in the following increasing order: AC 3 cm ($0mg/m^2{\cdot}d$) $${\approx_-}$$ CC 3 cm ($0mg/m^2{\cdot}d$) < CC 1 cm ($0.03mg/m^2{\cdot}d$) < AC 1 cm capped ($0.07mg/m^2{\cdot}d$) < uncapped ($0.24mg/m^2{\cdot}d$). The release of nitrogen and phosphorus were effectively blocked by AC capping of 3 cm thickness, and CC capping of 3 cm thickness effectively controlled the release of phosphorus. The order of increasing COD release rate was as follows: AC 3 cm ($0mg/m^2{\cdot}d$) $${\approx_-}$$ CC 3 cm ($0mg/m^2{\cdot}d$) < CC 1 cm ($5.03mg/m^2{\cdot}d$) < AC 1 cm ($7.28mg/m^2{\cdot}d$) < uncapped ($10.05mg/m^2{\cdot}d$), indicating that AC and CC capping effectively interrupted the release of organic contaminants from the sediments. It was concluded that AC and CC could effectively block the release of T-N, T-P and COD release from contaminated reservoir sediments.
This study examined the nitrate removal efficiency which uses an electrowinning, and also analyzed the nitrate removal efficiency under a variety of operating conditions such as nitrate concentrations, pH, current densities, electrodes, reducing agents in order to determine optimal conditions. In addition, the multi-step electro-chemical process test has been also analyzed. During the electrowinning, the identical Zn-Zn and Pt-Ti electrodes in the insoluble oxidation electrode(Pt) has shown the highest nitrate removal efficiency in the 100 mg $NO_3^{-}$ -N/L concentration. In the concentration of 150 mg $NO_3^{-}$ -N/L, the efficiency of the Zn-Zn electrode were 70~85%, and that of Pt-Ti electrode were 40~50% without any change of pH. In the high concentration of 500 and 1,000 mg $NO_3^{-}$ -N/L, the higher the concentration, the more decrease of its nitrate removal efficiency decreased. However, the energy consumed for nitrogen removal increased when the nitrate concentration was high. As a result of the multi-step electro-chemical process test, We chose the Test 4. Because the first, most of the zinc consumed from 1 step was recovered from over the 2 step. The second, amount of consumption anode decreased with insoluble anode Pt from over the 2 step. And the third, Zn cathode increased the possibility of reusing Zn deposited. In view of the results so far achieved, the multi-step electro-chemical process would be applied to treat nitrogen involved in metal finishing wastewater.
