  • A general solution to the field equations of homogeneous isotropic generalized thermoelastic diffusion with two relaxation times (Green and Lindsay theory) has been obtained using the Fourier transform. Assuming the disturbances to be harmonically time.dependent, the transformed solution is obtained in the frequency domain. The application of a time harmonic concentrated and distributed loads have been considered to show the utility of the solution obtained. The transformed components of displacement, stress, temperature distribution and chemical potential distribution are inverted numerically, using a numerical inversion technique. Effect of diffusion on the resulting expressions have been depicted graphically for Green and Lindsay (G-L) and coupled (C-T) theories of thermoelasticity.

  • Global value numbering (GVN) is a method for detecting equivalent expressions in programs. Most of the GVN algorithms concentrate on detecting equalities among variables and hence, are limited in their ability to identify value-based redundancies. In this paper, we suggest improvements by which the efficient GVN algorithm by Gulwani and Necula (2007) can be made to detect expression equivalences that are required for identifying value based redundancies. The basic idea for doing so is to use an anticipability-based Join algorithm to compute more precise equivalence information at join points. We provide a proof of correctness of the improved algorithm and show that its running time is a polynomial in the number of expressions in the program.

  • The present work focuses on the use of coconut fiber in self compacting concrete. Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) is a highly flowable, stable concrete which flows readily into place, filling formwork without any consolidation and without undergoing any significant segregation. Use of fibers in SCC bridge the cracks and enhance the performance of concrete by not allowing cracks to propagate. They contribute to an increased energy absorption compared to plain concrete. Coconut fiber has the highest toughness among all natural fibers. It is known that structures in the seismic prone areas are always under the influence of cyclic loading. To justify the importance of strengthening SCC beams with coir fiber, the present work has been undertaken. A comparison is made between cyclic and static loading of coconut fiber reinforced self compacting concrete (FRSCC) members. Using the test data obtained from the experiment, hysteresis loops were drawn and comparison of envelope curve, energy dissipation, stiffness degradation were made and important conclusions were draw to justify the use of coconut fiber in SCC.

  • A large number of chemical pollutants including phthalates, alkylphenolic compounds, organochlorine pesticides and bisphenol A have the ability to disrupt endocrine function in animals. and alter cognitive function. Because hormone mediated events playa important role in central nervous system development and functions. The speculations that the changes in cognitive function are mediated by the endocrine-like action of these chemicals. (omitted)

  • Pyrenophora graminea, the causal agent of leaf stripe disease, is an economically important pathogen of barley found worldwide. Forty-four isolates of diverse geographical origin within Syria were grouped into vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs) by demonstrating heterokaryosis by complementation tests using nitrate nonutilizing (nit) mutants. All isolates were grouped into three VCGs-1-A, 1-B and 1-C. No self-incompatibility was observed in any of the isolates tested. VCG 1-A was the most common group within growing regions in Syria and proved to be the most virulent of the VCGs identified. These data indicate that the level of virulence in P. graminea is related to VCG.

  • Cold Formed Steel members are widely used in today's construction industry. However the structural behavior of light gauge high strength cold formed steel sections characterized by various buckling modes are not yet fully understood. Because of their simple forming and easy connections, the commonly used cold formed sections for beams are C and Z. However both these sections suffer from certain buckling modes. To achieve much improved structural performance of cold formed sections for beams both in terms of strength and stiffness, it is important to either delay or completely eliminate their various modes of buckling. This paper presents various innovative sectional profiles and stiffening arrangements for cold formed steel beams which would successfully contribute in delaying or eliminating various modes of premature buckling, thus considerably improving the load carrying capacity as well as stiffness characteristics of such innovative cold formed sections compared to conventional cold formed steel sections commonly used for beams.

  • The reflection and transmission of micropolar thermoelastic plane waves at the interface between an elastic solid and micropolar generalized thermoelastic solid is discussed. The interface boundary conditions obtained contain interface stiffness (normal stiffness and transverse stiffness). The expressions for the reflection and transmission coefficients which are the ratios of the amplitudes of reflected and transmitted waves to the amplitude of incident waves are obtained for normal force stiffness, transverse force stiffness and welded contact. Numerical calculations have been performed for amplitude ratios of various reflected and transmitted waves. The variations of amplitude ratios with angle of incident wave have been depicted graphically. It is found that the amplitude ratios of reflected and transmitted waves are affected by the stiffness, micropolarity and thermal distribution of the media.

  • Four nonpathogenic isolates of Fusarium oxysporum isolated from spinach showed suppressive effect on the occurrence of the Fusarium wilt of spinach caused by F. oxysporum f. sp. sprinaciae, among which NF01 controlled the disease most effectively. And NF01 was not pathogenic to tomato, cucumber, radish and spinach. This isolate was further tested for the biological control of the disease. The isolate was not inhibitory to the growth of the pathogen on potato sucrose agar medium, however the Fusarium wilt disease occurred less by drenching spore suspension of the nonpathogenic isolate. The control effect of the isolate was higher at lower inoculum level of the pathogen than at the higher inoculum level, and in the pretreatments than the simultaneous treatment of the isolate with the pathogen inoculation. The nit mutants of the isolate were easily formed on chlorate containing media, and was reisolated selectively as nit mutant from infected soil and plants. The reisolation rate of the isolate as opposed to pathogen was high at preinoculated soil and plants relative to the simultaneous inoculation of the isolate with the pathogen.
