  • Many interference in blood should be considered for non-invasive blood glucose level monitoring by near-infrared spectroscopy because blood glucose concentration is about 0.1% (w/v) in normal state. In this study, we investigated the influence of other blood components on blood glucose level monitoring by near-infrared spectroscopy. It carried out by newly developed portable type-NIR system (1100∼2200 nm). Spectrum features of NIR diffuse spectral data were investigated for some blood compnents powder such as hemoglobin, blood serum albumin, urea, uric acid, ascorbate, glucose, cholesterol and as adding glucose powder into other blood components powder mixture.   • Since the SSC(soluble solid contents) and titratable acidity of fruit are highly concerned to the taste, the need for measuring them by non-destructive technology such as NIR(Visual and Near-infrared) spectroscopy is increasing. Specially, in order to grade the quality of each fruit with a sorter at sorting and packing facilities, technologies for online measurement satisfying the tolerance in terms of accuracy and speed should be developed. Many researches have been done to develop devices to measure the internal qualities of fruit such as SSC, titratable acidity, firmness, etc. with the VIS(Visual)/NIR(Near Infrared) reflectance spectra. The distributions of the SSC, titratable acidity, firmness, etc. are different with respect to the position and depth of fruit, and generally the VIS/NIR light can interact with fruit in a few millimeters of pathlength, and it is very difficult to measure the qualities of inner flesh of fruit. Therefore, to measure the average concentrations of each quality factor such as SSC and titratable acidity with the reflectance-type NIR devices, the spectra of fruit at several positions should be measured. Recently, the interest about the transmittance-type VIS/NIR devices is increasing. NIR light can penetrate through the fruit about 1/10-1/1,000,000 %. Therefore, very intensive light source and very sensitive sensor should be adopted to measure the transmitted light spectra of intact fruit. The ultimate purpose of this study was to develop a device to measure the transmitted light spectra of intact fruit such as apple, pear, peach, etc. With the transmittance-type VIS/NIR device, the feasibility of measurement of the SSC and titratable acidity in intact fruit cultivated in Korea was tested. The results are summarized as follows; A simple measurement device which can measure the transmitted light spectra of intact fruit was constructed with sample holder, two 500W-tungsten halogen lamps, a real-time spectrometer having a very sensitive CCD array sensor and optical fiber probe. With the device, it was possible to measure the transmitted light spectra of intact fruit such as apple, pear and peach. Main factors affecting the intensity of transmitted light spectra were the size of sample, the radiation intensity of light source and the integration time of the detector. Sample holder should be designed so that direct light leakage to the probe could be protected. Preprocessing method to the raw spectrum data significantly influenced the performance of the nondestructive measurement of SSC and titratable acidity of intact fruit. Representative results of PLS models in predicting the SSC of peach were SEP of 0.558 Brix% and R2 of 0.819, and those in predicting titratable acidity were SEP of 0.056% and R2 of 0.655.

  • Near-infrared(NIR) reflectance spectroscopy was employed to qualify various ploymorphs. We collected 8 potential polymorphs forms of Medicine T for this study. Near-infared spectra of the powder samples contained in glass vials were obtained over the wavelength region of 1100-1750nm. There were the peak around 1560nm in the 6 spectra among 8 spectra. Principal component analysis(PCA) has been performed to examine the qualitative difference of 8 polymorphs PC space. (omitted)

  • In this study, a FT-NIR spectroscopy was used to determine skin moisture. NIR diffuse reflectance spectra were collected from separated dorsal and abdominal hairless mouse skin. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) was applied to develop calibration models that determine the water content. The seven spectra regions, such as 833-2500, 1100-2250, 1100-1750, 1750-2250, 1200-1600, 1800-2200, and 1200-2200 except 1600-1800 nm, were investigated for the best model by PLSR. The developed model predicted skin moisture for validation set with a standard errors of prediction (SEP) of 4.43%, when used 833-2500 nm. (omitted)

  • Fourier transform-near infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy is a simple, rapid, non-destructive technique which can be used to make quantitative analysis of chemical composition in grain. An interest in total dietary fiber (TDF) of grain such as rice has been increased due to its beneficial effects for health. Since measuring methods for TDF content were highly depending on experimental technique and time consumptions, the application of FT-NIR spectroscopy to determine TDF content in milled rice. Results of enzymatic-gravimetric method were $1.17-1.92\%$ Partial least square (PLS) regression on raw NIR spectra to predict TDF content was developed Accuracy of prediction model for TDF content was certified for regression coefficient (r), standard error of estimation (SEE) and standard error of prediction (SEP). The r, SEE and SEP were 0.9705, 0.0464, and 0.0604, respectively. The results indicated that FT-NIR techniques could be very useful in the food industry and rice processing complex for determination of TDF in milled rice on real time analysis.

Hubble Space Telescope's Near-IR and Optical Photometry of Globular Cluster Systems in the Fornax and Virgo Clusters of Galaxies

  • We present space-based near-IR (NIR) and optical photometry of globular clusters (GCs) of 16 early-type galaxies in the Fornax and Virgo Clusters. The NIR imaging data for the nearby galaxies was acquired with the IR Channel of the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3/IR) in the F110W ($J_{110}$) and F160W ($H_{160}$) bandpasses. We introduce the full sample of our WFC3/IR program, describe data reductions and photometric measurements including GC candidate selection criteria, and then show selected GCs' color-magnitude diagrams. The tilted features in the diagrams related to the morphological types of host galaxies are discussed in the context of galaxy formation and evolution histories. Combining F475W ($g_{475}$) and F850LP ($z_{850}$) data taken from the Advanced Camera for Surveys Virgo and Fornax Cluster Surveys with our NIR data, we investigate the bimodality in optical-NIR color distribution and the nonlinear feature of the optical-NIR color relation as a function of optical color for these extragalactic GC systems.

  • The concept of “precision agriculture” or “site-specific farming” is usually confined to the fields of soil science, crop science and agronomy. However, because plants grow in soil, animals eat plants, and humans eat animal products, it could be argued (perhaps with some poetic licence) that the fields of feed quality, animal nutrition and animal production should also be considered in this context. NIR spectroscopy has proved over the last 20 years that it can provide a firm foundation for quality measurement across all of these fields, and with the continuing developments in instrumentation, computer capacity and software, is now a major cog in the wheel of precision agriculture. There have been a few giant leaps and a lot of small steps in the impact of NIR on the animal world. These have not been confined to the amazing advances in hardware and software, although would not have occurred without them. Rapid testing of forages, grains and mixed feeds by NIR for nutritional value to livestock is now commonplace in commercial laboratories world-wide. This would never have been possible without the pioneering work done by the USDA NIR Forage Research Network in the 1980's, following the landmark paper of Norris et al. in 1976. The advent of calibration transfer between instruments, algorithms which utilize huge databases for calibration and prediction, and the ability to directly scan whole grains and fresh forages can also be considered as major steps, if not leaps. More adventurous NIR applications have emerged in animal nutrition, with emphasis on estimating the functional properties of feeds, such as in vivo digestibility, voluntary intake, protein degradability and in vitro assays to simulate starch digestion. The potential to monitor the diets of grazing animals by using faecal NIR spectra is also now being realized. NIR measurements on animal carcasses and even live animals have also been attempted, with varying degrees of success, The use of discriminant analysis in these fields is proving a useful tool. The latest giant leap is likely to be the advent of relatively low-cost, portable and ultra-fast diode array NIR instruments, which can be used “on-site” and also be fitted to forage or grain harvesters. The fodder and livestock industries are no longer satisfied with what we once thought was revolutionary: a 2-3 day laboratory turnaround for fred quality testing. This means that the instrument needs to be taken to the samples rather than vice versa. Considerable research is underway in this area, but the challenge of calibration transfer and maintenance of instrument networks of this type remains. The animal world is currently facing its biggest challenges ever; animal welfare, alleged effects of animal products on human health, environmental and economic issues are difficult enough, but the current calamities of BSE and foot and mouth disease are “the last straw” NIR will not of course solve all these problems, but is already proving useful in some of these areas and will continue to do so.

NIR as a tool for optimizing sampling time and studying batch dynamics.

  • The paper presented here is the initial part of a larger study, in which it was determined which quality parameters in cheese powder could already be predicted by NIR at an early stage in the process and which could only be predicted at the final stages of the process. This initial study was performed in order to establish the levels and nature of variation within and between batches such that the subsequent data collection could be tackled optimally. The perspectives evolved into more than was originally planned and revealed some interesting uses of NIR-technology. Cheese powder production starts as a batch process, where waste cheese from other dairies is melted down in a vat. The process then turns into a continual process as the vat is emptied and the melted cheese is then filtered, homogenized, pasteurized and finally spray dried. Between each batch the powder is to a greater or lesser degree a mixture of 2 batches. This paper is divided into 2 aspects, one regarding the optimization of sampling time and the other is a study of process dynamics. Optimizing sampling time This initial study included 9 powder samples from 9 different batches produced during one day. The raw materials for the batches were chosen with the aim of creating a relatively high level of variation in the data. The total of 81 samples were taken out at regular intervals and spectra were collected on a NIR-systems 6500 instrument. The subsequent reduction of the data by PCA to score values shows the power of NIR as a tool to determine not only when samples are representative of a certain batch, but also which batches are stable enough to include in a further study. Studying process dynamics To take this experiment a step further 1 of the 81 samples were sent to the laboratory for further analyses. The samples were chosen on the criteria that they covered the spectral variation in the dataset. These samples were analysed for 4 chemical components and 5 physical attributes, which are essential for describing the quality of the product. The latent structure of the 7 samples, using the chemical and physical variables, is totally comparable to the latent structure of the NIR spectra. This outcome makes it possible to describe the dynamics of one day's production both chemically and physically with relatively little resources. Additionally it raises the question as to whether reference values are needed, as the latent structure of the NIR-spectra appears to be sufficient in providing information on the quality of the product. To be able to use NIR in this way would require defining quality limits in the principal component space as opposed to each of the reference values. The potential of NIR applied in an explorative fashion with batch processes opens a whole new gateway for the use of this technology. This study explains yet again after so many years in the field “why I'm crazy about NIR!”.

녹차의 원산국 판별을 위한 NIR 분석

  • NIR(근적외) 분광분석법이 녹차의 원산국을 판별하는데 이용할 수 있는지를 알아보기 위하여 분쇄한 47종의 한국산 및 일본산 녹차에 대하여 NIR 분석을 실시한 후, 그 분광 데이터에 대하여 principal component analysis(주성분 분석 )와 canonical variate analysis(정준판별분석)을 실시하였다. 15개의 주성분과 1100~2500nm에서의 first derivative log(1/R) 데이터를 이용할 경우, 제1 및 제2 정준판별함수는 한국산 녹차 및 일본산 녹차를 판별하는데 가장 효과적이었다. 사용된 canonical variate analysis는 녹차 시료를 97.87%의 정확도로 그 지리적 출처를 판별하였다. 한편 first derivative log(1/R) spectra상의 파장범위 1674~1686, 1950~1992, 2014~2030및 2118~2158 nm에서 일본산 녹차와 3종의 한국산 녹차 그룹간에 현저한 차이가 발견되었다. 이 차이는 polyphenols, caffeine 및 amino acids와 같은 녹차의 주요성분과 관련되어 있지 않으며 주로 지리적 출처상의 차이에 기인한 것으로 판단되었다.

Development of Beef Freshness Sensor Using NIR Spectroscopy (NIR을 이용한 쇠고기의 신선도 센서 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a real-time sensor for beef freshness. Contents of biogenic amines (BA), saccharides and proteins were highly related with freshness on the beef meats. Relations of those chemical contents and NIR spectra were studied. Tyramine showed the best correlation coefficient at 1250nm. Correlation between VBN (volatile basic nitrogen) and K value, which were both freshness measurement method, was determined by the PCR (principle component regression). The correlation model had the values of $R^2=0.989$ and SEC=1.78, respectively. The model was validated at $R^2=0.963$ and SEP=2.285, respectively.
