  • Electro-optic modulator (EOM) takes a vital role in connecting the electric and optical fields. Here, we present a heterogeneously integrated EOM based on the lithium niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) platform. The key modulation waveguide structure is a field-enhanced slot waveguide formed by embedding silicon nanowires in a thin-film lithium niobate (LN), which is different from the previously reported LN ridge or etchless LN waveguides. Based on such slot structure, optical mode field area is reduced and enhanced electric field in the slot region can interact well with LN material with high Electro-optic (EO) coefficient. Therefore, the improvements in both aspects have positive effects on enhancing the modulation performance. From results, the corresponding EOM by adding such modulation waveguide structure achieves better performance, where the key half-wave-voltage-length product (V𝜋L) and 3 dB EO bandwidth are 1.78 V·cm and 40 GHz under the electrode gap width of only 6 ㎛, respectively. Moreover, Lower V𝜋L can also be achieved. With these characteristics, such field-enhanced waveguide structure could further promote the development of LNOI-based EOM.

  • The effects of pyrochlore phase and micostructure on the dielectric properties. such as dielectric constant, dissipation factor, diffusensess coefficient and dielectric hysteresis characteristics, of Lead magnesium niobate(PMN) ceramics have been studied as a function of the amount of excess MgO. The pyrochlore phase in PMN was completely eliminated with the addition of 5 m/o excess MgO. Also, the dielectric constant and remanent polarization increased with increase in grain size, density and then decreased with grain growth inhibitation for further addition of excess MgO. The diffuseness coefficient showed a tendency nearly reverse to that for the dielectric constant and remanent polarization change.

  • Ultrafine lead magnesium niobate $Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3}) O_3$ (PMN) powders have been successfully prepared via a micro-emulsion processing technique. By stepwise hydrolysis using aqueous as the precipitant, hydroxide precursor was obtained from nitrate solutions dispersed in the nanosized aqueous domains of a microemulsion consisting of cyclohexane, non-ionic surfactant (NP5+NP9) and an aueous phase. Upon calcination of the microemulsion-derived precursor at $800^{\circ}C$, PMN powders with 100% perovskite phase was obtained.

  • We fabricated 1 mm-thick periodically-poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystals by using a high-voltage amplifier for standard electric field poling combined with a voltage multiplier. Furthermore, two 1 mm-thick PPLNs were directly bonded to make a 2 mm-thick PPLN. The large aperture allowed broad angular tuning, and a broad spectral range of quasi-phase matched second-harmonic generation can be achieved in a single channel. High-power applications are also expected.

  • Lithium niobate ($LN:LiNbO_3$) is a compound of niobium, lithium and oxygen. The characteristics of LN are piezoelectricity, ferroelectricity and photoelectricity, and which is widely used in surface acoustic wave (SAW). To manufacture LN devices, the LN surface should be a smooth surface and defect-free because of optical property, but the LN material is processed difficult b traditional processes such as grinding and mechanical polishing (MP) because of its brittleness. To decrease defects, chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) was applied to the LN wafer. In this study, the suitable parameters such as down force and relative velocity, were investigated for the LN CMP process To improve roughness, the LN CMP was performed using the parameters that were the highest removal rate among process parameters. And, evaluation of optical property was performed by the optical reflectance.

  • We demonstrated a simple way of evaluating the duty cycle error in periodically polled lithium niobate(PPLN) based on the method of binary phase diffraction grating. To demonstrate this method, -Z face etched PPLN of desired periods were fabricated by the standard electric field poling technique. The etched PPLN was considered as a surface-relief binary phase grating. The diffraction patterns were recorded for different spatial locations along the length of the sample. The experimentally observed efficiencies of the diffracted orders were compared with the theoretically calculated values to estimate the duty cycle error.

  • The bismuth zinc niobate(BZN) pyrochlore thin films were fabricated on Pt(111)/Ti/$SiO_2$/p-Si(100) substrates using a reactive rf magnetron sputtering method at the conditions of working gas ratio Ar:$O_2$=90:10, substrate temperate $R.T{\sim}600^{\circ}C$, rf power 50 W. The dielectric constant, tunability, leakage current density and crystallinity of thin films changed with a substrate temperate. The BZN pyrochlore thin films sputtered with a substrate temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ and RTA at $800^{\circ}C$ showed a leakage current density lower than $10^{-8}\;A/cm^2$ at the range of ${\pm}300\;kV/cm$.

  • Ultrasound transducers are an essential component of combined photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging systems and play an important role in image evaluation. However, ultrasound transducers are opaque; therefore, light must bypass the ultrasound transducer to reach the target point to produce a photoacoustic image. Providing different paths for the optical and acoustic signals results in a complicated system design, increasing the system volume. To overcome these problems, an optically Transparent Ultrasound Transducer (TUT) was developed. Unlike conventional opaque ultrasound transducers, optically TUT can be fabricated by a variety of manufacturing methods and they are suitable for use with specific piezoelectric elements and serve various purposes. In this study, a comparative analysis of the results of using Lithium Niobate (LNO), Lead Magnesium Niobate-Lead Titanate (PMN-PT), and Polyvinylidene Difluoride (PVDF), which are materials used in piezoelectric element-based TUT. LNO is a piezoelectric element widely used in TUT, and PMN-PT has been actively studied recently with a higher transmission and reception rate than LNO. Existing TUT have lower ultrasound resolution than photoacoustic resolution, but they have recently been manufacturing focused TUT with high ultrasound resolution using PVDF. A comparative analysis of the production results of these TUT was performed.

  • Potassium lithium niobate(KLN) single crystal for a nonlinear-optic material, which changes the wavelength of lasers, has a ferroelectric tetragonal tungsten bronze structure at room temperature. It has been very hard to get single crystals of good quality due to the cracks during cooling process. In order to investigate the composition change due to the evaporation of solution during the growth, the thermogravimetric analysis was carried out. In atmospheric condition at $1000^{\circ}C$ which is about $10^{\circ}C$ higher than the crystal growing temperature, the weight change was negligible amount of $1.46{\times}10^{-5}$g/($\textrm{cm}^2$hr). By using both the Pt plate as the nucleation site and the slow cooling method with temperature fluctuation, KLN single crystal of good quality of size 1 cm could be obtained. The phase transition temperature was $490^{\circ}C$, which was higher than that reported by other researchers of the other composition. The optical anisotropy due to the absorption of OH-band exists in the range of IR.
