Revising the Korean Newspaper Advertising Code of Ethics: An Empirical Investigation Leveraging Expert Interviews and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) Surveys

  • The Code of Ethics for Newspaper Advertising in Korea, first implemented in 1976 and subsequently revised in 1976, 1996, and 2021, is a critical regulatory instrument for the country's advertising sector. However, the specialized domain of "advertising ethics," particularly the "code of advertising ethics," remains under-explored. This research addresses this scholarly gap, providing an empirical analysis of the 2021 amendment's revision trajectory. This study employs a robust methodological approach, integrating expert interviews and small-group AHP-based surveys. This approach allows for a comprehensive understanding of the revision needs, referencing existing ethical codes studies, and comparing similar ethics codes nationally and internationally. The research further investigates key challenges such as personal data protection and copyright issues in the rapidly evolving digital media landscape, while preserving the existing code's inherent value. The findings are expected to significantly contribute to the emerging field of advertising ethics in Korea, offering practical implications for future code revisions.

Analysis of Dietary Informations in Newspapers and Magazine for Children (2002) (어린이신문 및 잡지에 게재된 식생활 관련 정보 현황조사(2002년))

  • Children regard newspapers and magazines as the important source of information. Because informations about diet in the newspaper and magazines are regarded as good, it is necessary to find out whether informations provided to children are correct. Thus, this study shows the present situation of informations on diet by monitoring 3 newspapers (Kids. Chosun, Kids. Donga, Kids. Hankook) and 2 magazines (Earinee - Dongsan, Sae-But) for children. This study focused on the quantitative and the qualitative analysis for articles and advertisements. For the quantity, rate and number were calculated. For the quality, the accuracy was analyzed. Result of this study were as follow; Analyzed the number of articles and advertisements on diet, there are 2 times more number of advertisements (339 cases) than that of articles (180 cases) in the newspaper. There are slightly more number of advertisements (24 cases) than that of articles (18 cases) in the magazine. Most of advertisements are about processed foods and children' favorite foods. Especially, the advertisement of processed foods are ranked first by the quantity with 245 cases (75%) in the newspaper. In the magazine, 10 cases (42%) are about processed foods. About source of advertisements on diet informations in the newspaper, there are 300 cases (86.7%) without evidence based data and 34 cases (9.8%) of interview with entertainers, from the total 346 cases. In the magazine, there are high rate of cases without evidence based data and interview with entertainers. For the evaluation of the information about diet in the newspaper, there are 148 cases (19.7%) with no clear guidance and position, some cases with advertisements for specific products and etc. Discordance between subjects and contents, and emphasis of specified field or some parts are found from the total 750 cases. About the accuracy of contents, from the total 180 cases in the newspaper, 99 cases (55%) are inappropriate and 19 cases (10.6%) are appropriate. In magazines from the total 18 cases, 7 cases (38.9%) are inappropriate and 11 cases (61.1 %) are appropriate. With these results, we can conclude that informations about diet in newspapers and magazine for children needs improvement. Therefore, for newspapers and magazines contents should be reported scienifically by inspecting contents and by taking professional advice, in order to spread the accurate information about diet. View-oriented and Green Marketing Characteristics of Apartment Advertisements on Newspapers (신문 아파트광고에 나타난 조망지향성과 그린마케팅의 속성)

  • This study analyzed the key words in Korea's leading apartment brands and newspaper advertisements to examine especially their view-oriented advertising characteristics and green marketing properties. Four study topics were established and examined for this purpose. The following are the results; 1. The key words on apartment brands and catch phrases are $\ulcorner$emotion-oriented$\lrcorner$ words, such as taste, pride, and happiness, and $\ulcorner$environment-oriented$\lrcorner$ to appeal to customers with beautiful views of the nature. Also key words on newspaper advertisement headlines stress views for $\ulcorner$environment-oriented$\lrcorner$ characteristics as well as $\ulcorner$emotion-oriented$\lrcorner$ characteristics for elegance and luxury, and $\ulcorner$function-oriented$\lrcorner$ characteristics for the future. Views, nature and park are key words and everything about illustration that are especially emphasized even on the headlines of newspaper advertisements. 2. Unlike brands or headlines, sub-headlines and body copies stress $\ulcorner$modern-oriented$\lrcorner$ characteristics for life, culture, and accessibility, followed by $\ulcorner$emotion-oriented$\lrcorner$ characteristics. Key words on caption were also highly $\ulcorner$modern-oriented$\lrcorner$, followed by $\ulcorner$environment-oriented$\lrcorner$ and $\ulcorner$function-oriented$\lrcorner$ characteristics for practical aspects. 3. In result of $X^2-test$, $\ulcorner$environment-oriented$\lrcorner$ key words that convey good views, naturalism, parks, and nature are the major representation of green marketing strategies of apartment brands and newspaper advertisements. However, brands were strongly $\ulcorner$emotion-oriented$\lrcorner$, whereas captions were $\ulcorner$modern-oriented$\lrcorner$ and body copies were $\ulcorner$investment-oriented$\lrcorner$. Both apartment brands and advertisements were consistently $\ulcorner$environment-oriented$\lrcorner$, but were not consistent in other factors. 4. Different parts of newspaper advertisements are focusing on green marketing strategies in terms of environmental protection, but are actually leaning toward modern-oriented lifestyles and accessibility. Thus, it is more well-being marketing rather than green marketing. To pursue true green marketing despite the limits of newspaper advertisements, it is necessary to present products and pricing strategies that represent sustainable.

  • Anjunshinmungo (The safety e-report) has been in operation since 2014, and there are about 1 million cumulative reports by June 2019. This study analyzes the contents of more than 1 million safety newspapers reported at the present time of information age to determine how powerful and meaningful the people's voice and interest are. In particular, we are interested in forecasting ability. We wanted to check whether the report of the safety newspaper was related to possible disasters. To this end, the researchers received data reported in the safety newspaper as text and analyzed it by natural language analysis methodology. Based on this, the newspaper articles during the analysis of the safety newspaper were analyzed, and the correlation between the contents of the newspaper and the newspaper was analyzed. As a result, accidents occurred within a few months as the number of reports related to response and confirmation increased, and analyzing the contents of safety reports previously reported on social instability can be used to predict future disasters.

  • This article is concerned with exploring labour market transformation in newspaper industry and thereby looking into skill formation and professionalization of journalists. In Korea, according to previous research, newspaper journalist labour market had been characterized by a low inter-firm mobility of workers and patterns of long-term employment and firm-based skill training. However, over the past few years, as new product strategies of newspaper firms has changed due to management crisis employers pull back from the responsibilities of investment on skill training and securing job stability for journalists. However, in spite of overall weakened firm-based skill formation systems within the market, there still seems to be long way to build alternative systems of skill developments for them. As a result, it will be argued that, in the absence of manifest labor market institutions such as apprenticeships or skill certification system, which are assumed to traditionally certify workers' professionalization, occupational identity and professionality of newspaper journalist labour market will be weakened. Labor market data from interviews with journalists in the newspaper industry are used in order to test this hypothesis.

A Study on the general language use of ROOJIN : in Headline Database of Newspaper Articles and Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese by KOKKEN (현대일본문장어의 「노인(老人)」사용실태 - 国硏「ことばに関する新聞記事見出しデ?タベ?ス」 「現代日本語書き言葉均衡コ?パス」를 분석대상으로)

  • The study analyzed a diachronic distribution, social meanings and social evaluations of ROOJIN. 'Headline Database of Newspaper Articles' and 'Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese' by KOKKEN were used as research data. There were 305 newspaper articles (About 0.2%) which contained the word ROOJIN at 'Headline Database of Newspaper Articles'. The number of newspaper articles related to ROOJIN started to increase in a rapid rate in 1972 and 1973. They were also increased in 1976, from 1981 to 1987, 1992 and 1993. The reasons of increasing of newspaper articles related to ROOJIN on those 4 periods of time could be summarized as follows. Firstly, there was a increasement of ROOJIN who are lonely, are not able to move about freely or live alone. Secondly, the understanding of a symptom of aging called BOKE was necessary. Thirdly, there were negative evaluations in a society towards ROOJIN. There were 453 cases which contained the word ROOJIN at 'Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese' on the data since 2000. The most frequently used words were ones that are related to senior care facilities. There were 109 cases (24%) which contain those words. '~SISETSU', '~SENTA-', '~HO-MU' were presented as words related to senior care facilities. Among them, 78 cases contained the word '~HO-MU' which was similar to a home with family members. The second most frequently used words were ones that are related to 'welfare for the aged' and they are led by 'medical care for the aged'. They occupied about 8%. Institutionalization of medical care for the aged, medical expenses, nursing were presented as words related to 'medical care for the aged'. Words that were related to 'welfare for the aged' led by 'senior care facilities' and 'medical care for the aged' occupied about 32% of research data. As mentioned above, problems of the aged in Modern Japan such as negative evaluations in a society towards ROOJIN, ROOJIN who are lonely, are not able to move about freely or live alone, BOKE could be identified by analyzing the data. Also, The frequent usage of words such as 'Home for the aged', 'medical care for the aged' and 'nursing' could be identified. The outcome of analysis suggested that a family traditionally had a function of solving problems of the aged but that function was reduced in modern Japan. It also suggested that there was a tendency to outsource problems of the aged as much as possible.

A Corpus-based Study of Translation Universals in English Translations of Korean Newspaper Texts (한국 신문의 영어 번역에 나타난 번역 보편소의 코퍼스 기반 분석)

  • This article examines distinctive linguistic shifts of translational English in an effort to verify the validity of the translation universals hypotheses, including simplification, explicitation, normalization and leveling-out, which have been most heavily explored to date. A large-scale study involving comparable corpora of translated and non-translated English newspaper texts has been carried out to typify particular linguistic attributes inherent in translated texts. The main findings are as follows. First, by employing the parameters of STTR, top-to-bottom frequency words, and mean values of sentence lengths, the translational instances of simplification have been detected across the translated English newspaper corpora. In contrast, the portion of function words produced contrary results, which in turn suggests that this feature might not constitute an effective test of the hypothesis. Second, it was found that the use of connectives was more salient in original English newspaper texts than translated English texts, being incompatible with the explicitation hypothesis. Third, as an indicator of translational normalization, lexical bundles were found to be more pervasive in translated texts than in non-translated texts, which is expected from and therefore support the normalization hypothesis. Finally, the standard deviations of both STTR and mean sentence lengths turned out to be higher in translated texts, indicating that the translated English newspaper texts were less leveled out within the same corpus group, which is opposed to what the leveling-out hypothesis postulates. Overall, the results suggest that not all four hypotheses may qualify for the label translation universals, or at least that some translational predictors are not feasible enough to evaluate the effectiveness of the translation universals hypotheses.

  • 급격한 사회변화에 대응해 신속, 정확한 정보를 바라는 인간의 욕구는 증대되고 있으며, 특히 신문은 현대 사회에서 정보 전달의 매우 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 신문 제작 시스템은 전자 편집·조판 체제인 CTS(Computerized Typesetting System), 제판, 쇄판, 인돼·발송시스템 등으로 구성된다. 이러한 신문 제작 시스템은 초고속 정보 통신망의 급속한 발전과 같은 새로운 미디어 환경의 변화에 대응하기 위해 새로운 방법이 요구되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 문서 공유와 문서 교환의 국제 표준인 SGML을 이용한 신문편집 시스템 설계를 위하여 신문의 구조적 분석을 통하여 SGML 신문편집 시스템을 위한 DTD와 스타일 정의에 관하여 제안한다.

A Study on the Change of Housing Values through Advertisement in Newspaper (신문광고를 통해 본 시대별 주거가치 변화에 관한 연구 -아파트 관련 광고를 중심으로-)

  • This study was designed to know the change of housing values from 1960s to the present, for finding the directions of housing design and housing policy. The content analysis method was used for this study. Data were collected through advertisement about apartment in newspaper, and the sample consisted of 781 advertisements. Frequency, percentage and x2-test were used. The results showed that housing values were changed according to the times. Especially, the economic value, the convenience value, the family centrism value, the location value, and the educational environment value were changed.

  • 최근 e-book이나 e-newspaper가 새로운 기록 매체로서 많은 주목을 받고 있으며 기존의 책이나 신문을 대체할 가능성도 게시되고 있다. 이러한 e-book 등은 새로운 휴대 정보통신기기로서도 새로운 시장을 창출할 것으로 기대되고 있다. e-book이나 e-newspaper에 사용되는 디스플레이는 기존의 TFT-LCD, AMOLED와는 다소 다르게 오랜 시간동안 내용을 읽더라도 눈의 피로도를 현저히 줄어야하기 때문에 e-paper라는 새로운 디스플레이가 제시되고 있다. 본 tutorial에서는 e-paper의 개념과 종류, 동작 원리, 응용 분야 등을 살펴보고 새롭게 개발되고 있는 e-paper 기술과 응용 제품들을 소개할 것이다. 또한 e-paper와 기존의 TFT-LCD, AMOLED와 비교 분석하여 e-paper의 한계와 가능성에 대해서도 토의할 것이다.
