  • Mesorhabditis microbursaris (Steiner, 1926) Sudhaus, 2011, belonging to the family Mesorhabditidae (Rhabditomorpha), is newly reported from South Korea. During a survey of small streams, M. microbursaris was isolated from sedimentary soil samples. The genus Mesorhabditis Osche, 1952 nematodes are distributed all over the world and are mostly found from terrestrial habitats, however are sometimes found in freshwater. At present, 34 valid species have been recorded from Mesorhabditis; however, only three species have been reported from South Korea. Mesorhabditis microbursaris exhibits morphological characters of other congeneric species, including shorter distance between vulva and anus than the distance between anus and tail, rudimentary bursa with narrow velum and short genital papillae, shorter spicules than tail and conical tail. However, this species can be distinguished from other Mesorhabditis species by its morphometric characters and three pairs of bursal papillae. Details of the morphological characteristics and morphometrics of M. microbursaris are described and illustrated based on optical microscopy.

  • A branchial parasitic bopyrid, Parabopyrella elongata (Shiino, 1949), is newly recorded in Korean fauna. Parabopyrella elongata differs from its congeners by the following characteristics: the head is smooth anteriorly in females; the pleon of females has distinct and wide lateral indentations on both sides; the pleotelson has a rounded distal end in females; oostegite 1 has a rounded posterolateral point; the pleon of males is single-segmented; and the uropod is absent in males. In this study, the detailed description and illustrations of the species are presented with an emended key to known Parabopyrella species in the Far East. The variations in P. elongata were also discussed. This is the first report of the genus Parabopyrella from South Korea.

  • Four species of green hairstreak butterflies, namely Ahlbergia ferrea, A. tricaudata, A. frivaldszkyi, and A. leei, belonging to the genus Ahlbergia Bryk, 1946 (Papilionidea: Lycaenidae), are examined in Korea. It was discovered that Ahlbergia frivaldszkyi, which was previously incorrectly reported in Korea, is actually A. leei. We report two species, A. frivaldszkyi and A. tricaudata as new additions to the Korean fauna. Detailed diagnoses of these four species are provided, including descriptions of both male and female genitalia, along with a key for identifying the four species found in Korea.

  • Background: Hypersaline environments (> 40 practical salinity units [PSU]) represent some of the most extreme conditions on Earth, supporting a variety of halophilic and halotolerant bacteria, archaea, and protists. The taxon Heterolobosea includes numerous halophilic protists, making it a valuable model for studying eukaryotic adaptation to high salinity. Particularly, the genus Pharyngomonas, a deep-branching lineage within Heterolobosea, comprises mainly obligate halophiles, providing insights into early protist adaptations in hypersaline environments. Additionally, these protozoa play crucial ecological roles as grazers of bacteria and archaea, and are prey for higher trophic levels in hypersaline environments. Results: In the present study, two previously reported amoeboflagellates were isolated for the first time from hypersaline waters (~300 PSU) in two solar salterns in the Republic of Korea. Microscopic observations revealed that both strains exhibited the characteristic morphologies of Pharyngomonas, including amoeboid, flagellate, and cyst forms. Molecular phylogenetic analysis of their 18S rRNA gene sequences confirmed their close relationship to known Pharyngomonas kirbyi strains. The two strains demonstrated growth within a salinity range of 75-200 PSU, with optimal growth observed at 75-100 PSU, confirming their status as true halophiles. All known P. kirbyi strains are obligate halophiles, exhibiting a clear instance of adaptive radiation of halophilic eukaryotes. Additionally, the genus Pharyngomonas has been found in hypersaline environments across multiple continents (Asia, Europe, North America, Australia, and Africa), suggesting that it plays an ecologically significant role as a grazer of prokaryotes or prey for higher trophic levels in these habitats. Conclusions: On the bases of morphological and molecular analyses, two strains identified as P. kirbyi were isolated and characterized for the first time from solar salterns in the Republic of Korea. This discovery highlights the presence and adaptation of halophilic eukaryotes in such extreme environments. The confirmation of these strains as obligate halophiles provides additional evidence for the adaptive radiation of halophilic eukaryotes. Furthermore, the ecological role of Pharyngomonas species underscores their importance as trophic regulators in hypersaline ecosystems. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the diversity, adaptation, and ecological functions of halophilic eukaryotes in extreme environments.

  • Two species of the minuta-subgroup within the oncaeid copepod genus Triconia $B{\ddot{o}}ttger$-Schnack, 1999 collected in the equatorial Pacific Ocean are newly recorded. A female T. minuta (Giesbrecht, 1893 ["1892"]) and both male and female T. umerus ($B{\ddot{o}}ttger$-Schnack and Boxshall, 1990) from the northeast equatorial Pacific are redescribed with the comparison of its morphological details, which differs from previous studies, in terms of the larger body size, the length to width ratio of the genital double-somite, the relative length of the outer basal seta on P5, and the ornamentation of the appendages. The characters, which are used for identification, such as the length ratio of the outer subdistal and outer spine versus the distal spine on P3-P4, and the outer spine length of the middle exopodal segment on P3 and P4 are reported for the first time. Information on the variations in the endopodal spine lengths of swimming legs 2-4 is also provided for T. minuta and T. umerus, with the summary of the wide zoogeographical distribution of these two species.
