New record of Ulva sublittoralis (Ulvales, Chlorophyta) in Korea

  • A marine ulvalean species (Chlorophyta) was collected from the eastern coast of Korea. This species is morphologically characterized by a distromatic, dark to medium green and mostly irregularly orbicular or irregularly expanded thallus with entire or undulate margin without serrations. Vegetative cells are irregularly polygonal with distinctly rounded corners in shape, and have chloroplast completely covering the outer cell wall and one to two pyrenoids per cell. In a phylogenetic tree based on ITS (Internal Transcribed Spacer) sequences, this Korean alga nests in the same clade with Ulva sublittoralis, as a sister clade of U. californica, U. flexuosa and U. tanneri, which share the irregularly orbicular or expanded thallus normally without teeth cells. The genetic divergence between them is intraspecific within Ulva. Accordingly, it is identified as U. sublittoralis based on the morphological and molecular data. This is the first record of Ulva sublittoralis in the Korean marine algal flora.

Six New Recorded Species of Macrofungi on Gayasan National Park in Korea

  • The fungi play important roles in maintaining the balance and homeostasis of natural ecosystems. We investigated fungal specimens indigenous to the Gayasan National Park located in the deep inlands of southeastern Korea from 2017-2020. Six fungal species in the Korean macromycota-Chiua olivaceoreticulata, Entoloma conchatum, Galerina sulciceps, Hebeloma radicosoides, Spongiporus gloeoporus, and Tricholoma sinoacerbum-were identified based on morphological characteristics and rDNA sequences. The six fungal speices were newly revealed on the Korean Peninsula, and it supports that the continuous investigaton is the best way to realize the mycosis.

Taxonomic Account of Elachista (Elachistaceae, Phaeophyta) in Korea

  • A taxonomic and floristic account for Korean Elachista is provided. All previously reported taxa from Korea are reappraised. Elachista in Korea consists of five species: E. falcata Lee sp. nov., E. nipponica Umezaki, E. okamurae Yoshida, E. orbicularis (Ohta) Skiner, and E. tenuis Yamada. Elachista fucicola (Vell.) Aresch. 1. typica Rosenvinge sensu Kang (1966) that was previously recorded in Korean flora was assigned to another taxon, E. okamurae Yoshida. Elachista taeniaeformis Yamada is transferred to the new genus, Proselachista Lee et Garbary. Elachista falcata is characterized by having a pseudoparenchymatous medulla, assimilatory filaments with equal diameter over their entire length and small projections on the lower portion, falcate paraphyses, and gourd-shaped unilocular sporangia.

Chromosome numbers of eight Carex taxa in Korea (Cyperaceae)

  • In the flora of Korea, Carex L. is one of the most species-rich genera. Among nearly 157 Carex taxa, less than 30 have had chromosome numbers reported. We report the meiotic chromosome numbers of eight Carex taxa from Korean populations, which include the first count for C. accrescens Ohwi (n = 37II) and the first chromosome investigations of Korea populations for three taxa: C. bostrychostigma Maxim. (n = 22II), C. lanceolata Boott (n = 36II), and C. paxii Kuk. (n = 38II). In most species, chromosome counts observed in the study are included in the variation ranges of previous chromosome numbers. However, C. bostrychostigma Maxim. (n = 22II) and C. planiculmis Kom. (n = 29II) are assigned new chromosome numbers. Carex is known to have holocentric chromosomes, lacking visible primary constrictions and exhibiting great variance in its chromosome number. Further investigations of the diversity of Carex chromosomes will provide basic information with which to understand the high species diversity of the genus.

Saxifraga cortusifolia (Saxifragaceae): A new record for the Korean flora from Jejudo Island

  • Saxifraga cortusifolia Siebold & Zucc. (Saxifragaceae, sect. Irregulares, ser. Rufescentes), a species considered endemic along mountain streams throughout Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu in Japan, was discovered as a wild population in the Cheona Valley in Haean-dong, Jeju-si on Jeju-do Island of Korea. The population consisted of three subpopulations occupying narrow areas 10 × 10 m2, 5 × 5 m2, and 10 × 5 m2 in size. The number of individuals in the three subpopulations was confirmed to exceed 100. Most of the individuals were on or below rocks at the edge of the valley. A morphological description, detailed photos, and a key to related taxa in Korea are presented.

The Flora in Chungnyeongsan and Seorisan (경기도 축령산과 서리산 일대의 식물상)

  • The flora survey on Chungnyeongsan and Seorisan was conducted 6 times from 1998 to 2000.817 taxa such as 112 families 415 genera 688 species 1 subspecies 116 varieties 12 forma were recorded. Dominant species in investigated areas was Quercus mongozica and some deciduous broad-leaved species, such as Quercus sp., Acer sp., Fraxinus sp., Carpinus sp., etc. were codominant species in these areas. Pinus koraiensis and Larix teptozepis plantations were also found in these areas. The 16 taxa of rare plants protected by Forestry Service were found in these areas and among them 10 taxa were new populations which had not been recorded in these areas. Discovery of Erunthis stellata, Aconitum koreanum, Paeonia japonica, Scopotia japonica and Acunthopanax senticosus populations indicate that these areas could be regarded as very important one in a biogeographical aspect. Endemic plants were listed 35 taxa and among them 22 taxa including Corydalis maculata, Ulmus macrocarpa, Scrophutaria horuiensis, Cirsium setidens, etc. were new one. Naturalized plants were listed 39 taxa and among them 30 taxa were new one. Lower naturalized index(NI) and higher urbanized index(UI) were recorded compared to those of neighbored areas. There were many kinds of threatening factors fur the plant resources in survey areas, so it is necessary to limit the number of visitors and to introduce the natural relaxation system.

Wood-rotting Fungal Flora of Kanghwa Island

  • Through ten field surveys in Kanghwa Island from August of 1997 to March of 2002, total 107 specimens of wood-rotting fungi belonging to the Aphyllophorales were collected and identified to the species. They taxonomically amounted to 10 families, 31 genera, and 48 species. Among them, one family, Steccherinaceae, and four genera, Australohydnum, Castanoporus, Dacryobolus and Haplotrichum were confirmed as new to Korea. Five unrecorded species, Australohydnum dregeanum, Castanoporus castaneus, Dacryobolus karstenii, Haplotrichum conspersum and Hyphoderma odontiiforme were registered here with descriptions.

The Aphyllophorales of Mungyong Saejae

  • To evaluate the establishment of Mungyong Saejae Natural Ecology Park located in the northwestern Gyongbuk Province, a scientific survey for the mushroom flora of the park was carried out from May to December of 1999. A checklist of the Aphyllophorales collected from the park was prepared. The list included 67 species of 44 genera belonging to nine families in the Aphyllophorales. Among them, seven species, Antrodia malicola, Ceriporia purpurea, Oligoporus leucospongia, Perenniporia tephropora, Phanerochaete xerophila, Sistotrema diademiferum and Vuilleminia comedens, were confirmed as new to Korea and are registered here as unrecorded species along with descriptions and microscopic drawings.

A new record for the Korean flora: Rubus nishimuranus Koidz. (Rosaceae) (우리나라 미기록 식물: 제주산딸기(장미과))

  • Rubus nishimuranus Koidz. (Rosaceae), a species previously unrecorded for the Korean flora, was collected in the lowlands near a beach on Jeju Island. This species was known to be distributed only in Japan. R. nishimuranus differs from R. trifidus Thunb. ex Murray, by having leaves 3-foliate or sometimes the upper leaflets connate below and from R. hirustus Thunb. by having leaves ternate and the leaflets sessile or nearly so. The somatic chromosome number was 2n = 2x = 14 and the size of chromosomes ranged $1.2-2.5{\mu}m$. The chromosome complement of this species consisted of three pairs of metacentrics (chromosomes 1, 2 and 5), submetacentrics (chromosomes 3, 6 and 7) and a pair of subtelocentrics (chromosome 4).

Taxonomical Studies of Three Unrecorded Entoloma Species in Korea

  • Since 2013, more than 100 Entoloma (Entolomataceae, Agaricales) collections have been made during field investigations of mushroom flora in Korea. Among these collections, three Entoloma species were identified as new records from Korea. Morphological examinations were made based on the macro- and micro-morphological features of the isolates collected during field visits. To ensure the identity of the isolates at the species level, DNA sequences from four gene regions (rpb2, ITS, 28S, and mtSSU) were compared. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first records of E. aprile, E. chytrophilum, and E. hirtipes in Korea. Comprehensive descriptions, photographs, and phylogenetic examinations are presented here.
