  • Arthonia coreana, Arthonia superpallens, and Arthonia zelkovae are new species from South Korea. All new species are in the Euarthonia tribe, based on the key characteristics of colorless hypothecium and multi-cellular spores. A. coreana has a dull brownish hypophloedal thallus without bleaching and rounded or curved big apothecia in comparison with those of Arthonia punctiformis. A. coreana consistently exhibits 4-septate ascospores, which is a distinctive characteristic that distinguishes it from other Arthonia species. A. superpallens has a white-greenish thallus, pale yellowish apothecia, and a trentepohlioid alga. However, A. superpallens has no distinct prothallus, adnate, and convex apothecia, no pycnidia, and is UV-, in contrast with related species in the Arthonia antillarum group. A. zelkovae has a white, epiphloedal thallus, brownish-black epruinose apothecia covered with a whitish bark layer, and smaller ascospores in comparison with those of A. punctiformis. A. zelkovae consists of a chlorococcoid alga, which differs from related Arthonia species such as A. punctiformis, Arthonia pinastri, and Arthonia glaucella. Although A. zelkovae is similar to Arthonia dispersa in its white-colored thallus, blackish apothecia, and the presence of a chlorococcoid photobiont, A. zelkovae differs from the latter in having larger-sized 3-septate ascospores. Arthonia cinnabarina f. marginata, A. glaucella, Arthonia ilicinella, Arthonia lapidicola, Arthonia leioplacella, Arthonia pertabescens, A. pinastri, Arthonia spadicea, and Arthonia stellaris are newly described in Korea. The diagnostic characteristics of these species are discussed and presented. An artificial key is provided to facilitate identification of Arthonia species from Northeast Asia.

  • Three localities of coastal sand-dunes along the western coastline of Korea: Sindu-ri, Sinhap-ri, and Jaeun-do, were surveyed for the lepidopteran fauna. This survey resulted in the records of five species new to Korea: a species of Cosmopterigidae, Cosmopterix flavidella Kuroko, 2011, based on eight specimens from Sinhap-ri and Jaeun-do; a species of Tortricidae, Noduliferola abstrusa Kuznetzov, 1973, based on five specimens from Sinhap-ri and Jaeun-do; a species of Pyralidae, Maliarpha borealis Sasaki, 2012, based on four specimens from Sindu-ri; and two species of Erebidae, Ectoblemma rosella Sugi, 1982 and Metachrostis miasma (Hampson, 1891), based on one specimen for each from Jaeun-do. Three genera, Noduliferola Kuznetzov, 1973, Maliarpha Ragonot, 1888 and Ectoblemma Sugi, 1982, are introduced for the first time to the Korean fauna. Two species, Noduliferola abstrusa and Maliarpha borealis, are suggested as the indicator species for coastal sand-dunes. The superficial and genital features of the five species found from this study are described and illustrated. A photograph of the female genitalia of Ectoblemma rosella is provided for the first time.

  • Four new species of genus Scalarispongia (Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida: Thorectidae) are described from Jejudo Island, Korea. These new species of Scalarispongia are compared with 14 reported species of the genus by the skeletal structure. Scalarispongia songakensis n. sp. is similar to S. lenis in sponge shape but differs in skeletal structure and meshes are not divided into two sections. The length of secondary fibres between primary fibres of this new species is much longer than S. lenis'. Scalarispongia radicula n. sp. is resembles S. songakensis in sponge shape, but this new species has pseudo-tertiary fibres at the sponge base. Scalarispongia maraensis n. sp. is very similar to S. subjiensis in sponge shape but primary fibres of this new species are not simple because fibres have wide webbing. Scalarispongia massa n. sp. is characterized by the large mass sponge shape and numerous open oscules form a long ling on the ridge of the sponge.

  • Two new species of the family Spongiidae, Spongia (Heterofibria) cora/lina n. sp. and Spongia (Heterofibria) purpurea n. sp. are described. They were collected from Gageodo Island, Jeollanam-do, Korea. Spongia (H.) coral/ina n. sp. is closest to S. (H.) cristata Cook & Bergquist (2001) from New Zealand in skeletal features, but the new species differs from S. (H.) cristata by the arrangement of fibres and growth form. Spongia (H.) purpurea n. sp. closley resembles S. (H.) cristata, but the new species differs from New Zealand specimens by the arragement and thickness of pseudo-tertiary fibres.

  • Two new Hydropsychidae (Insecta: Trichoptera) species from the Philippines are described. Hydropsyche philippinensis, n. sp., differs from other congeners in the structure of the phallic apparatus. Diplectrona lagunensis, n. sp., can be distinguished from other congeners by its distinct white band pattern in the forewings and by the structure of the phallus. Both new species were collected from a high mountain stream in the northern part of the Philippines. Paratype materials were barcoded to make the sequences readily available in the GenBank.

  • Two species of the family Porcellidiidae associated with hermit crabs are described from Korean seas. These are Porcellidium similis, new species collected from Pagurus similis, Pagurus pectinatus and Porcellidium brevicaudatum Kicks & Webber collected from Dardanus impressus. The new species resemble closely Porcellidium brevicaudatum in general body form, but is clearly distinguished from Porcellidium vrevicaudatum in that the caudal ramus is weakly oblique in tis distal border and the lobe of leg 5 is more slender.

  • This study aims to clarify the diversity of bryozoans which were collected from Seogwipo waters in Jeju Island, Korea. A total of 78 species has been reported from Seogwipo waters so far. In the present study, 63 species were found from nine sites of Seogwipo waters from 2008 to 2012, including six newly added species to the Korean bryozoan fauna and twelve species new to Seogwipo waters. As a result of this study, the bryozoans from Seogwipo waters were turned out to be 96 species, 64 genera, 42 families, three orders and two classes.
