  • A single specimen of Lepidocybium flavobrunneum (910.0 mm standard length) in the family Gempylidae, was collected off northwestern Jeju Island, Korea on April 28, 2016. The species is characterized by a blackish body, very low first dorsal fin spines, second dorsal fin rays followed by six finlets, anal fins followed by five finlets, caudal peduncle with a large keel flanked by two small supplementary keels, and a lateral line with an irregular wave pattern. Here, we propose the new Korean names "Heuk-gal-chi-ggo-chi-sok" for the genus Lepidocybium and "Heuk-gal-chi-ggo-chi" for the species L. flavobrunneum.

  • Three unrecorded species of free-living marine nematodes, belonging to genus Enoplus Dujardin, 1845 collected from rocky intertidal seagrass on the eastern coast of Korea, are described and illustrated. Enoplus taipingensis Zhang and Zhou, 2012 is characterized by longer body size, a series of lateral setae throughout the tail in male, the presence of trumpet-shaped precloacal supplement with well-dilated proximal end, and the presence of spicules with five to eight semicircular plates. Enoplus meridionalis Steiner, 1921 is characterized by the presence of trumpetshaped precloacal supplement with slightly dilated proximal end, paired massive spicules, and tail with two pairs of stout terminal setae. Enoplus mammillatus Timm, 1959 is easily distinguished from the congeners by narrow tubular-shaped precloacal supplement. In this study, we provide detailed morphological features of three Enoplus species by differential interference contrast microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. This is the first report on the species of the genus Enoplus from the Korean waters.

  • Industrial crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells with using a screen printing technology share the global market over 90% and they will continue to be the same for at least the next decade. It seems that the $2^{nd}$ generation and the $3^{rd}$ generation technologies have not yet demonstrated competitiveness in terms of performance and cost. In 2014, new world record efficiency 25.6% (Area-$143.7cm^2$, Voc-0.740V, $Jsc-41.8mA/cm^2$, FF-0.827) was announced from Panasonic and its cell structure is Back Contact $HIT^*$ c-Si solar cell. Here, amorphous silicon passivated contacts were newly applied to back contact solar cell. On the other hand, 24.9% $TOPCon^{**}$ cell was announced from Fraunhofer ISE and its key technology is an excellent passivation quality applying tunnel oxide (<2 nm) between metal and silicon or emitter and base. As a result, to realize high efficiency, high functional technologies are quite required to overcome a theoretical limitation of c-Si solar cell efficiency. In this presentation, Si solar cell technology summarized in the International Technology Roadmap for Photovoltaics ($^{***}ITRPV$ 2014) is introduced, and the present status of R&D associated with various c-Si solar cell technologies will be reviewed. In addition, national R&D projects of c-Si solar cells to be performed by Korea University are shown briefly.

  • A terebellid polychaete identified as Pista shizugawaensis Nishi and Tanaka, 2006, whose species validity has been doubted, is newly reported from the southwest coast of Korea. Korean materials of the present study have several characteristics that agree well with the original description of P. shizugawaensis as follows: two pairs of branchiae on the 2nd and 3rd segments have tufts composed of many dichotomously branched filaments; the nephridial papillae are present on the 6th and 7th segments; the uncini on the anterior and middle thoracic segments possess only long-handled shafts while those on the posterior ones have additional short-handled shafts or lacking shafts; the notosetae are broadly or narrowly winged capillary. The authors examined the taxonomic value of the presence of lateral lobes on the 5th and 6th segments, which has been known as a key characteristic feature of P. shizugawaensis in the classification of Pista species. In the present study, several characteristics such as the shape of notosetae, uncinial shafts in the thoracic segments, and the presence of thin narrow lateral lobes on the 4th segment are suggested as the specific characteristics that help to distinguish P. shizugawaensis from its congeners. A key to Pista species from Korean waters is also provided.

  • Two unrecorded species of the snapper, Lutjanus malabaricus (296.0 mm standard length [SL]) and L. stellatus (350.0 mm SL) belonging to the family Lutjanidae, were first collected from the western coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea. L. malabaricus is characterized by having a dark marking on the upper half of the caudal peduncle, a band of vomerine teeth that does not protrude posteriorly at the middle, and nine anal soft rays. Compared to its Korean relative, L. malabaricus is distinguishable by having rows of scales that run obliquely in the dorsal-posterior direction above the lateral line (vs. parallel to the lateral line in L. argentimaculatus). L. stellatus can be identified by the absence of wavy blue lines on the head (vs. many blue lines in L. rivulatus) and presence of a white spot above the lateral line (vs. a black blotch on the lateral line in L. rivulatus). We propose new Korean names, "Jin-hong-tung-dom" and "Huin-jeom-tung-dom," for L. malabaricus and L. stellatus, respectively.

  • The investigation of the fishes was conducted based on the specimens from the Wooi-Islands, southern west coast of Korea in August, 1998. The fishes were composed of 25 species and 22 genera belonging 15 families. Among them, the gobiid fishes composed of 6 species and the combtooth blennies of 3 species. The gobiid fishes, Chasmichthys dolichognathus, Tridentiger trigonocephalus and Synechogobius hasta were most commonly found in the intertidal area of these islands. One specimen collected from tidepool at tentatively identified as Abudefduf bengalensis of the family Pomacentridae for the first time from Korea. This species was characterized by having seven black bars on the trunk of body. A new Korean name "Huk-jul-dom" is proposed for this species.

  • Comparative morphology of the genus Branchiostegus has been investigated based on the specimens collected from the adjacent waters of Korea. Branchiostegus japonicus has a distinctive silvery white triangular marking behind eye, while B. albus has nothing. B. albus has about 4 yellow strips along the posterior margin, however, remainder have 5 to 6 longitudinal yellow stripes. In B. auratus, its head length is more than 26% of standard length, but, less than 26% in B. argentatus. This study reveals that B. argentatus is the first record from Korea, and we propose "T$\check{u}$ng-h$\acute{u}$k-ch$\check{o}$m-ok-tu-$\check{o}$" for B. argentatus as a new Korean name.

  • Pseudanostirus ecarinatus (Stepanov, 1930) is recognized for the first time in Korea. A redescription and illustrations of the species are presented based on a single male specimen collected from Mt. Bangtae Gangwon-do. We also provide diagnostic characteristics of the genus, which clearly separate it from other closely related genera, Calambus Thomson, 1859 and Anostrius Thomson, 1859.

  • The morphology of the two marine hypotrichous ciliates Apokeronopsis bergeri and A. ovalis, isolated from the Yellow Sea, Korea, are described based on live and protargol-impregnated specimens. It is the first time that these species have been recorded in Korea. In addition, the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene was sequenced for comparison with the public database. The genus Apokeronopsis has recently been established in the family Pseudokeronopsidae, and the two congeners of the Korean population share the following characteristics: one row of one or more buccal cirri; usually two frontoterminal cirri; midventral complex composed of two distinctly separated rows; one left and one right marginal row; number of transverse cirri, more than eight; absence of caudal cirri; two types of cortical granules. Apokeronopsis bergeri differs from A. ovalis primarily in body shape (fusiform vs. oval form), size (usually $260{\times}80{\mu}m$ vs. $160{\times}55{\mu}m$), type II cortical granules (oval vs. round shape; yellow-green vs. mostly colourless and only a few yellow-green in colour), and morphometric data (75-106 vs. 53-70 in adoral membranelles; 37-47 vs. 24-36 in frontal cirri; 9-15 vs. 1-2 in buccal cirri), as well as molecular data (2.87% of pairwise distance).
