  • White LEDs (light-emitting diodes) are promising new-generation light sources which can replace conventional lamps due to their high reliability, low energy consumption and eco-friendly effects. This paper briefly reviews recent progress of oxy/nitride host phosphor and quantum dot materials with broad excitation band characteristics for phosphor-converted white LEDs. Among oxy/nitride host materials, $M_2Si_5N_8:Eu^{2+}$, $MAlSiN_3:Eu^{2+}$ M-SiON(M=Ca, Sr, Ba), ${\alpha}/{\beta}-SiAlON:Eu^{2+}$ are excellent phosphors for white LED using blue-emitting chip. They have very broad excitation bands in the range of 440-460 nm and exhibit emission from green to red. In this paper, In this review we focus on recent developments in the crystal structure, luminescence and applications of the oxy/nitride phosphors for white LEDs. In addition, the application prospects and current trends of research and development of quantum dot phosphors are also discussed.

  • Plasma Display Panels(PDPs) require to have improved luminous efficiency, low manufacturing cost, and high image quality to compete with other flat display devices such as Liquid Crystal Displays(LCDs) and organic light-emitting diodes(OLEDs). In addition, the diversity of product line-up may be needed for high market share. In this paper, the optical characteristics of typical green phosphor for PDP application are reviewed and the problem-based solution will be proposed. We also shortly describe the principle of 3D-PDPs which are promising. Then, the requirement of green phosphor for 3D-PDP application is summarized and research achievement, as of now, is described. The typical problems of $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$ phosphor, which is the most well-known, are the negatively charged surface property and the long decay time, which leads to unstable discharge in green cell and afterimage. These problems were solved by coating the phosphor surface with metallic oxide. It was found that $Al_2O_3$ would be the best material for $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$ phosphor. It gives longevity as well as low operating voltage due to the charging effect in green cells. Also, new phosphors, $(Y,\;Gd)Al_3(BO_3)_4:Tb$ and $(Mg,\;Zn)Al_2O_4:Mn$ phosphor are proposed for increasing the luminance and reducing the decay time, which are capable to apply for 3D-PDP application.

  • The blue phosphor, $BaMgAl_{10}O_{17}$:$Eu^{2+}$, showing a blue emission band at about 450 nm were prepared by solid state reaction of BaC $O_3$, A $l_2$ $O_3$, MgO and E $u_2$ $O_3$ with Al $F_3$ as a flux. The thermal quenching of BaMgAl $O_{17}$:E $u^{2+}$ phosphor significantly reduces the intensity of the blue emission. It is reduced by an amount of 50% after heating at around 800$^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. The red emission in the 580∼720 nm region of $^{5}$ $D_{0}$\longrightarro $w^{7}$ $F_1$ and $^{5}$ $D_{0}$\longrightarro $w^{7}$ $F_2$ transition of $Eu^{3+}$ is produced from the phosphor heated above 1,100$^{\circ}C$. The EPR spectrum also reveals that some part of E $u^{2+}$ ions are oxidized to trivalent ions above 1,100$^{\circ}C$ at around 90 and 140mT. This oxidation evidence is also detected from XANES absorption spectra for $L_{III}$ shell of Eu ions: an absorption peak is at 6,977eV of E $u^{2+}$ and 6,984eV of $Eu^{3+}$. The combined X-ray and neutron data suggests that the new phase of EuMgA $l_{11}$ $O_{19}$ magnetoplumbite structure may be formed by heat treatment.eat treatment.tment.eat treatment.tment.t.

  • The photoluminescence (PL) properties are studied for a new phosphor $BaZr(BO_{3})_{2}$ doped with $Eu^{3+}$ activator ion. The excitation spectrum shows strong absorption in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) region with an absorption band edge at 200 nm. The PL spectrum shows the strongest emission at 615 nm corresponding to the electric dipole $^{5}D_{0}\;{\rightarrow}\;^{7}F_{2}$ transition of $Eu^{3+}$, which results in a good color purity.

  • Eight types of LED packages were manufactured according to the type and composition ratio of phosphors by using commercially available white LED phosphors. CRI (Ra), a conventional color quality evaluation method was evaluated by using manufactured white LED; the Rf, Rg, color vector graphic, and color distortion graphic were evaluated with a new method, IES TM-30-15. The results of the evaluation confirmed that the new method compensated for the disadvantages of CRI, which was found to be inadequate when the color was saturated. The added evaluation index identified the chroma variation and color change. Furthermore, the study showed that the changes of Rf and Rg are small when controlling phosphors based on CRI, questioningthe necessity of identifyingchroma variation and color change.

  • A borate compound was adopted as new host material for $EU^{3+}$ activator. The $Eu^{3+}-doped\;YCa_3(GaO)_3(BO_3)_4$ (YCGB) phosphors were successfully synthesized. Also, their photoluminescence properties under the excitation of UV ray were measured. In the XRD patterns of the synthesized powders, most peaks were well-matched to a gaudefroyite phase. The emission of $Eu^{3+}$ in YCGB consists of a strong peak centered at 622 nm, which is attributed to $^5D_O-^7F_2$ transition of $Eu^{3+}$ and several weak peaks at near the wavelength. Optimum $Eu^{3+}$ concentration of the red phosphor under the excitation with the wavelength of 395 nm was about 75 mol%. This indicates that the red phosphor has a relatively higher critical concentration than that of the other $Eu^{3+}-doped$ phosphors. The dominant interaction character of $Eu^{3+}$ might be dipole-dipole interaction.

  • In order to improve the performance of green emitting phosphors for plasma display panel, the $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn,Al$ phosphors were synthesized using sol-gel technique and studied using SEM and VUV photoluminescence spectrometer. pH values of the starting solutions (pH = 0.5$\~$2.34) were controled by HCl as the catalysis of hydrolysis and wet gels were dried at $80^{\circ}C$ and $120^{\circ}C$, respectively. We investigated the effects of pH and drying temperatures during sol-gel processes. The results indicated that the phosphor prepared at pH = 1 showed the maximum emission intensity in both drying conditions and the effect of pH of the starting solution on morphology were increased with particle size as HCl and phosphor dried at high temperature showed more spherical and smaller particles than at low.

  • Yellow phosphor dispersed color conversion glasses are promising phosphor materials for white LED applications because of their good thermal durability, chemical stability, and anti-ultraviolet property. Six color conversion glasses were prepared with high Tg and low Tg specimens of glass. Luminous efficacy, luminance, CIE (Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage) chromaticity, CCT (Correlated Color Temperature), and CRI (Color Rendering Index) of the color conversion glasses were analyzed according to the PL spectrum. Color conversion glasses with high Tg glass frit, sintered at higher temperature, showed better luminous properties than did color conversion glasses with low Tg glass frit. The characteristics of the color conversion glass depended on the glass composition rather than on the sintering temperature. The XRD peaks of the YAG phosphor disappeared in the color conversion glass with major components of $B_2O_3$-ZnO-$SiO_2$-CaO and, in the XRD results, new crystalline peaks of $BaSi_2O_5$ appeared in the color conversion glass with major components of $Bi_2O_3$-ZnO-$B_2O_3$-MgO. The characteristics of CIE chromaticity, CCT, and the CRI of low Tg color conversion glasses showed worse color properties than those of high Tg color conversion glasses. However, these color characteristics of low Tg glasses were improved by thickness variation. So color conversion glasses with good characteristics of both luminous and color properties were attained.

  • Y2SiO5 Powder based on silicon and yttrium is well known as powder phosphors due to their excellent sustainability and efficiency. A new electroluminescence device was fabricated with Y2SiO5:Eu3+ powder phosphors though a simple screen printing method. The powder-dispersed electroluminescence device consisted of the Y2SiO5:Eu3+ powder-dispersed phosphor layer and BaTiO3-dispersed dielectric layer. The annealing temperature of the phosphor for the best powder electroluminescence performance was optimized to high temperature in ambient atmosphere though a solid-state reaction. The Eu3+ concentration for the best device performance was also investigated and furthermore, the thermal dependence of the electroluminescence intensity was investigated at the operating voltage at 100℃, which is the Curie temperature of the BaTiO3 layer. And the intensity was exponentially increased with voltage and increased linearly with frequency.
