  • Two porcelain crab species, Aliaporcellana pygmaea (De Man, 1902) and Lissoporcellana nakasonei (Miyake, 1978), are reported here for the first time from Korean waters based on specimens collected from Jeju Island, Korea. The genus Aliaporcellana Nakasone and Miyake, 1969, and Lissoporcellana Haig, 1978 are also reported here for the first time in Korea. Aliaporcellana pygmaea has a wide distribution. The specimen reported here is the most northern record of this species. While, Lissoporcellana nakasonei, associated with anthozoans, was known for distributing range from New Caledonia to southern Japan. As a result, the distribution rage of L. nakasonei is changed to Korea. Now, 12 species of porcelain crabs have been reported in Korean waters.

  • This study is based on crane fly specimens collected during an 80-year period (1937-2017) in the Republic of Korea and Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and are in collections maintained at the United States National Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, USA; the Snow Entomological Museum, University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS, USA; and the National Institute of Biological Resources, Incheon, South Korea. These crane flies are developing in wet places which usually prevail at lower altitudes, but such areas are often used for agriculture and human settlements, making natural habitats scarce and fragmented. Probably because of that, Limnophila crane flies are rare on the Korean Peninsula and were unnoticed by previous researchers. The genus Limnophila Macquart, 1834 with three species being new record for the Korean Peninsula: L. (Limnophila) japonica Alexander, 1913, L. (L.) pictipennis (Meigen, 1818) and L. (L.) politostriata Alexander, 1934a. General information are presented for each species, such as on genus and subgenus, redescriptions of species based on Korean specimens, illustrations of both sexes, elevation range, period of activity, habitat information, general distribution, and a distribution map for the Korean Peninsula.

  • Sea stars were collected from the adjacent waters of Jukbyeon and Jumunjin, Korea, using fishing nets at depths of 70-100 m. The specimens were identified as Henricia perforata (O.F. Müller, 1776) in the family Echinasteridae and order Spinulosida, with worldwide species distribution. H. perforata can be distinguished from some morphologically related Henricia species by its long, slender, and pointed adambulacral spines. The abactinal skeleton of H. perforata has wide papular areas resembling those of H. pachyderma, but the former has more papulae (two to seven). Previously, two genera of Echinasteridae, Aleutihenricia and Henricia, with a total of 12 echinasterid species, have been reported in Korea. The morphological characteristics of H. perforata are described and photographs are provided.

  • The species of the genus Athalia Leach from South Korea are reviewed. Six species are listed, one of which is a new record from South Korea (Athalia tanaoserrula Chu and Wang). In South Korean Athalia, we were not able to find any specimens of A. kashmirensis Benson, while many specimens identified as such were a misidentifications of A. tanaoserrula. Therefore, we think that A. kashmirensis should be excluded from the faunal list of South Korea. A key to the species of South Korean Athalia, diagnosis, photographs of the diagnostic characters, distribution and recorded hosts for each species are also provided.
