  • A specimen of Aetobatus flagellum was collected at Uljin in June 2005 for the first time in Korea. This specimen is characterized by the cephalic fin, the long snout, the dorsal fin between pelvic fins, spiracles on the dorsal side of the disc, the deeply notched nasal curtain and the one row of the teeth in the lower and the upper jaws. And unlike Aetobatus narinari, it does not have any spots on the its dorsal side of the disc. We report this specimen as the first record from Korea and name it 'Bak-jui-ga-o-ri' in Korean.

  • A total of six specimens (57.03-100.72 mm in standard length) belonging to the family Diodontidae were collected around Jeju Island, Korea between July and August 2013. On the Basis of morphological and molecular analyses, we identified the specimens as Cyclichthys orbicularis (Bloch, 1785), a new record to the Korean fish fauna. Morphologically, the species is characterized by nine caudal fin rays, immovable spines on the head and body except the caudal peduncle, and small black spots dorsally. Some morphometric characters changed disproportionately with growth, which was a new finding. Caudal peduncle length, body width and preanus length to standard length tend to grow at a rate different from that of overall growth. When the 601 base pairs of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequences of our specimens were compared with those of other diodontid fishes, our specimens clustered tightly around C. orbicularis (d = 0.000-0.002) in an NJ tree, with a high bootstrap value (99%). We herein describe the morphological and molecular traits of the specimens, and propose a new Korean name, "gud-ga-si-bok-sok" for the genus Cyclichthys, and "dung-geun-gud-ga-si-bok" for C. orbicularis.

  • We conducted a taxonomic study of bdelloid rotifers found from terrestrial habitats such as mosses, leaf litter and soil at four different locations in Korea. The study resulted in four new Korean records belonging to two genera in two families, Habrotrochidae and Philodinidae, of bdelloid rotifers: Habrotrocha soror Donner, 1950; H. thienemanni rubella Donner, 1951; H. valida Milne, 1916 and Philodina nitida nitida Milne, 1916. These new Korean records are rare and have very limited distributions. Habrotrocha thienemanni rubella and H. valida were not found again after their original descriptions until the present study. The present study is the third record for both H. soror and P. nitida nitida. All these four new Korean records are new to Asian fauna as well. Here, diagnostic characteristics and photomicrographs are provided for each new Korean record. In addition, a partial sequence of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (mtCOX1) for P. nitida nitida is presented.

  • The euphausiid crustacean Stylocheiron abbreviatum G. O. Sars, 1883 has been found in the southern waters of Jeju Island, Korea. This species is the third member of the genus Stylocheiron and the twelfth of the family Euphausiidae identified in Korean waters. Using descriptions of this species, a key to Korean euphausiids is presented.

  • This study reports a new record of freshwater fish Macrognathus aral (Bloch & Schneider) from Aiechu-Kalikhola tributary of the Maukhola river in Sarpang, Bhutan. The species was found in shoal of the tributary and was identified using its morphometric characters. It can be identified and distinguished from its congeners reported in Bhutan by dorsal fin rays XIX, 47, anal fin rays III, 52, rostral plates 28, pectoral fin rays 19, caudal fin rays 15, soft rayed part of dorsal and anal fin separated by a notch from rounded caudal fin, and presence of four ocelli at the base of dorsal fins. Further studies are needed to better understand its distribution, ecology, and population dynamics in the country. A key to species belonging to Mastacembelidae of Bhutan including the new record is provided.

  • The hipplytid shrimp Lysmata amboinensis (De Man, 1888) is recorded in Korean waters for the first time, based on specimens collected from Jeju-do Island in southern Korea. L. amboinensis is distinguished from L. vittata, previously the only known species of Lysmata in Korea by the color in life. The Korean Hippolytidae now includes 25 species in nine genera.
