The term 'silent period(SP)' refers to a transitory, relative or absolute decrease electromyography(EMG) activity, evoked in the midst of an otherwise sustained contraction. Masseteric SP is elicited by a tap on the chin during isometric contraction of masseter muscle. In this paper, a new EMG signal generation model including SP in masseter muscle is proposed. This work is based on the anatomical structure of trigeminal nerve system that related on temporomandibular joint(TMJ) dysfunction. And it was verified by comparing the real EMG signals including SP in masseter muscle to the simulated signals by the proposed model. Through this studies, it was shown that SP has relation to variable neurophysiological phenomena. A proposed model is based on the control system theory and DSP(Digital Signal Processing) theory, and was simulated using MATLAB simulink. As a result, the proposed SP model generated EMG signals which are similar to real EMG signal including normal SP and an abnormal extended SP. This model can be applied to the diagnosis of TMJ dysfunction and can effectively explain the origin of extended SP.
The differentiation of emotions by means of psychophysiological measures has been only moderately successful so far. A major reason for this dilemma may be the lack of appropriate neurophysiological modeling for the various autonomic nervous system based measures being used in emotion research. The aim of the present article is to provide such a neurophysiological background for electrodermal activity which has been frequently used as an indicator of emotional processes. First, the literature is reviewd with respect to the usability of electrodermal measures as an indicators of emotion. second, the neurophysilogical sources of electrodermal phenomena in general are described. Electrodermal activity has different origins in the central nervous system, a limbic-hypothalamic source that dominates during negative emotions as opposed to a premotor and basal ganglia source being predominantly active during positive emotions. Panksepp's model of four basic emotive systems is adopted for demonstrating subcortical structures and pathways possibly involved in the elicitation of both kinds of electrodermal activity in comparison with cardiovascular in dicators of emotional processes.
Background: Neuromodulation therapy has been used to an adjunctive treatment promoting motor recovery in stroke patients. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on neurobehavioral recovery and evoked potentials in rats with middle cerebral artery occlusion. Methods: Seventy Sprague-Daley rats were induced permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) stroke model and successful stroke rats (n=56) assigned to the rTMS (n=28) and sham (n=28) group. The 10 Hz, high frequency rTMS gave on ipsilesional forepaw motor cortex during 2 weeks in rTMS group. The somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) and motor evoked potential (MEP) were used to evaluate the electrophysiological changes. Behavioral function of the stroke rat was evaluated by the Rota rod and Garcia test. Results: Forty rats ($N_{rTMS}=20;\;N_{sham}=20$) completed all experimental course. The rTMS group showed better performance than sham group in Rota rod test and Garcia test at day 11 (p<0.05) but not day 18 (p>0.05). The amplitude of MEP and SSEP in rTMS group was larger than sham group at day 18 (p<0.05). Conclusions: These data confirm that the high frequency rTMS on ipsilesional cerebral motor cortex can help the early recovery of motor performance in permanent middle cerebral artery stroke model and it may simultaneously associate with changes in neurophysiological activity in brain.
Various simulation techniques were developed in the modeling of biological system during the last decades. Mostly analog and hybrid simulation techniques have been used. The authors chose the Digital Analog Simulation (DAS) technique by using the MIMIC language to simulate the saccadic eye movement system performances on the digital computer. There have been various models presented by many investigators after Young & Stark's sampled-data model. The eye movement model chosen by the authors is Robinson's model III which shows the parallel information processing characteristics clearly to the double-step input stimuli. In the process of simulation, the parameter and constants used were based on the neurophysiological data of the human and animals. The analog model blocks were converted to the corresponding MIMIC block diagrams and programmed into the MIMIC statements. The program was run on the CDC Cyber 72-14 computer. The essential input stimulus was double-step of 5 and 10 degrees, and target durations chosen were 50,100 and 150 msec. The results obtained by the DAS technqiue were in good agreement with analog simulation carried out by other investigators as well as with the experimental human saccadic eye movement responses to double-step target movements.

The human body and nervous system transmit information through electric charges. After the electric charge transmits information to the brain, we can feel pain, numbness, comfort, and other feelings. Electric therapy is currently used widely in clinical practice because the field of examination is more representative of electrocardiogram, and in the field of treatment is more representative of electrotherapy. In this study, we design a system for neurophysiological therapy and conduct parameter calculation and model selection for the components of the system. The system is based on a discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) boost circuit, and controlled and regulated by a single-chip microcomputer. The system does not only have a low cost but also fully considers the safety of use, convenience of the human-computer interface, adjustment sensitivity, and waveform diversity in the design. In future, it will have strong implications in the field of electrotherapy.
The presnt study reviewed two contrasting models, fixed-resolution slot versus flexible-resource hypotheses, for the representational characteristics of visual working memory (VWM), and emphasized the necessary efforts for resolving their conflicting arguments. To accomplish this goal, the review explored the background hypotheses of the object-based versus parallel independent storage models, and introduced theoretical bases for their contrasting claims. The review then evaluated validity of empirical evidence provided in the studies to support each model, and attempted an understanding of their neurophysiological background. The study further emphasized the necessity of theoretical and methodological reconsiderations to resolve their conflict as well as the necessity of obtaining converging pieces of evidence to accomplish the resolution.
Making good predictions about the outcome of one's actions would seem to be essential in the context of social interaction and decision-making. This paper proposes a computational model for learning articulated motion patterns for action recognition, which mimics biological-inspired visual perception processing of human brain. Developed model of cortical architecture for the unsupervised learning of motion sequence, builds upon neurophysiological knowledge about the cortical sites such as IT, MT, STS and specific neuronal representation which contribute to articulated motion perception. Experiments show how the model automatically selects significant motion patterns as well as meaningful static snapshot categories from continuous video input. Such key poses correspond to articulated postures which are utilized in probing the trained network to impose implied motion perception from static views. We also present how sequence selective representations are learned in STS by fusing snapshot and motion input and how learned feedback connections enable making predictions about future input sequence. Network simulations demonstrate the computational capacity of the proposed model for motion recognition.
Objective: To review the clinical basis of the Sa-Ahm 5 Element acupuncture originated about 360 years ago, papers and books were researched. Methods: Total of 58 books and papers ranging from ancient Huang Di nei jing to modern Bio Medical Acupuncture for Pain Management were investigated to study the clinical practice of it. Results: It could be practiced differently depending upon the viewpoints of diagnosis. They are ranging from theories of the greater-less of Yin and Yang, 7 emotions, organs- visceras, 8 diagnostic criteria, and pulse diagnosis to meridian circulation. Conclusions: It needs to be set clinical guidelines by which to practice Sa-Ahm acupuncture though it is nowadays mostly-used method in accordance with practitioner's viewpoints.
From the biopsychological point of view, learning could be defined as the processes to transfer the information that we obtain from environment to the neural circuits in the brain. In the studies to determine the biological substrates of learning and memory, there was a remarkable effort to identify neural circuits related with a specific type of learning and to describe the mechanixm of neural plasticity of learning and memory, under the assumption that the memory orinformation may be stored as a modificationof neural synapes in the central nerviys system. On the other hand, there was a different kind of tendency to analyze the mechanism of interactions between neural substrates involved in learning and memory, under the assumption that a specific information may be represented in the patterns of comples neural network of the central nervous system. The present review,in the former position.focused on the research methods and the chracteristics and finding of the investigations employing animal model systems to indentify the essential site of engram for learning and memory.Specifically, the review presents major advances in ourunderstanding of the memory trace circuit for a specific type of learning, with the use of animal model system, the detemination of the critical lodi of neuaral plastic chabges In learing abd memory, and the neurophysiological an biocemical mechanixms of the neural modifia by learint.
Specific protocols to increase the differentiation of neuronal cells from embryonic stem (ES) cells have been well established, such as retinoic acid induction and lineage selection of neuronal cells. For the neuropathological studies, ES-derived neurons (ES neurons) must show normal physiological characteristics related to cell death and survival and should be maintained in vitro for a sufficient time to show insults-specific cell death without spontaneous death. When mouse ES cells were plated onto astrocytes monolayer after retinoic acid induction, most ES cells differentiated into neuronal cells, which were confirmed by the presence of specific neuronal markers, and the cultures were viable for at least four weeks. When these cultures were examined for vulnerability to glutamate excitotoxicity, ES neurons were vulnerable to excitotoxic insults mediated by agonist-specific receptors. The vulnerability to excitotoxic death increased with developmental age of ES neurons in vitro. Specific receptors for Neurotrophin and GDNF family ligands were present in ES neurons. GDNF and NT-3 could modulate the survival and excitotoxic vulnerability of ES neurons. The vulnerability and resistance to toxic insults, which are essential requirements of model culture systems for neuropathological studies, make ES neurons to a useful model culture system. Especially ES cell are highly amenable to genetic modification unlikely to primary neuronal cells, which will give us a chance to answer more complicated neurophysiological questions. Recently there was an outstanding attempt to explore the cellular toxicity using human ES cells (Schrattenholz & Klemm, 2007) and it suggested that ES cells could be a new model system for neurophysiological studies soon and go further a large-scale screening system for pharmacological compounds in the future.
