A study on comprehension level of mathematical basic knowledge(MBK) of gifted students in middle school. The interest in mathematics gifted education is very high. However, in reality, there has been a shortage of the analysis of students' achievement result since mathematics gifted education began through the institute of gifted education in the education office in 2003. On this study, MBK is subdivided into definition, property and procedure and then examination questions arc developed on the basis of national level achievement standard. With these examination tools, total inspection was conducted in on metropolitan city and the result was analyzed. First, in a basic definition, relatively low achievement result was seen except the basic concept related operation. Second, in a basic property, very low achievement result was seen in the questions of basic property without basic definition and as a whole, the result was similar with the basic definition. Third, in basic procedure, the achievement result was very remarkable. This result shows we need tn increase the comprehension ability of MBK. To do this, the systematic alternative development of the questions of selecting gifted students and the contents of gifted education is required. This study proposes the meaningful implication to the selection question development related to the MBK and the improvement of gifted education contents. And it is expected to provide the positive change for mathematics gifted education.

This study presents an exploratory investigation of SMEs in Vietnam to understand the impact of personal-level factors on middle managers' work motivation and the moderating role of work environment. A survey of 450 middle managers (MMs) in 150 Hanoi's SMEs was conducted. The findings of this research showed a significant positive impact of Achievement (ACHV), Recognition (RECOG), and Responsibility (RESP) on work motivation of MMs under the investigation. Furthermore, the result indicated that the work environment affects the relationship between personal-level factors and work motivation of participants. Consequently, both work environment improvement and strategies related to personal-level factors need to be taken into consideration. Especially, Recognition and transparency in Responsibility are appreciated in organizations with a low level of work environment satisfaction. However, there were no indications that Participation (PAR) and Communication (CMM) have a considerable impact on work motivation of respondents, being neither low level nor high level of work environment satisfaction. Based on the findings, recommendations are suggested for Vietnam's SMEs to improve work motivation of MMs, by (i) developing standards with emphasis on their achievement, (ii) paying attention to organizational culture focusing on the responsibility of this managerial level, and (iii) building an adequate incentive system, especially non-financial incentives.
This study is based on the interviews with six mothers to analyze their verbal response types with their young children ages 3-5 attending day-care center. This study was done from 10AM. to 12PM. August 18th 2012 at the director's room at P day care center in Seoul. For this study the following four situations mothers experience in child-rearing have been selected: self-achievement, sibling quarrel, nagging and isolation. As for the interview questionnaires the four verbal response types-stimulating, problem-solving, critical and indifferent ones-have been used. According to the results of this research, mothers tend to use stimulating verbal response types like praise in the situation of self-achievement; problem-solving response types like command in the situation of sibling quarrel; problem-solving response types like warning in the situation of nagging; and lastly, stimulating verbal response types like empathy in the situation of isolation. Mothers need to form more empathy with their children in such difficult situations as sibling quarrel or nagging. For mothers' efficient verbal responses for their children, accordingly, empathy in parent education needs to be more emphasized.
This study empirically examines the effects of after-school self-care on children's development. More specifically, we examine whether the level of after-school self-care experiences that a child had during the 4 to 6 grade period affects the levels of school achievement, internalizing problem behaviors, externalizing problem behaviors, and delinquent behaviors during the child's middle school years. The study utilized the data from the Korea Welfare Panel Study's 1st and 4th year child supplementary surveys. The results show that the level of after-school self-care experiences negatively affects children's school achievement and internalizing problem behaviors. The study finds that, as the level of after-school self-care experiences increase, school achievement decreases and internalizing problem behaviors increase. The effects of after-school self-care on school achievement and internalizing behaviors were statistically significant even after controlling for the other variables that are known to be important factors on child development including child, parent, and family characteristics. The findings suggest that there is an independent effect of the level of after-school self-care on school achievement and internalizing problem behaviors. We also provide policy implications of the study. The policy considerations for latchkey children should include not only increasing the quantity of after-school programs, but also paying attention to the need of child development support programs beyond basic protection and care.
Purpose: This study investigated sleep satisfaction and influencing factors in Korean adolescents with atopic dermatitis. Methods: Data were obtained from 4,570 subjects who completed the 2017 13th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. For data analysis, descriptive statistics and multiple-sample logistic regression were used. Results: The results of this study were as follows. Gender, academic achievement, economic status, perceived stress, happiness, health status, and depression in the subjects showed a significant difference in terms of sleep satisfaction in atopic adolescents. Multiple-sample logistic regression analysis showed that male adolescents (odds ratio (OR)=0.48), academic achievement (low OR=0.67, middle OR=0.78), economic status (low OR=0.50, middle OR=0.64), lack of depression (OR=0.63), perceived stress (very OR=4.65, a little OR=2.25), perceived happiness (unhappy OR=1.99, moderate OR=1.22), perceived health status (unhealthy OR=2.17, ordinary OR=1.35), alcohol nondrinking (OR=0.75), and nonsmoking (OR=0.73) were not associated with sleep satisfaction. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop interventions that can relieve stress management and depression and develop positive emotions in atopic adolescents. In addition, there is a need to improve the environment to avoid health risks such as alcohol consumption and smoking and to minimize the effects of passive smoking.

This study examined longitudinal mediated effects of informal labeling on the relationship between adolescent abuse and academic achievement using autoregressive cross-lagged modeling. Data were obtained from the second, third, and fourth waves of the middle school student cohort (N=3,168) of the Korean Youth Panel Survey. The major longitudinal findings of this study are as follows: First, adolescent abuse was found to have a positive association with future informal labeling. Second, informal labeling was found to have a negative association with future academic achievement. Finally, the longitudinal relationship between adolescent abuse and academic achievement was partially mediated by informal labeling. Based on these results, this study suggests directions for adolescent abuse prevention. The need for education and prevention of informal labeling was discussed, as well as the direction of intervention programs for adolescents with experience of informal labeling. Furthermore, this study may provide empirical evidence for labeling theory and contribute to increasing awareness on the longitudinal influence of adolescent abuse and informal labeling.
Even though the distance education via Web has a great advantage to overcome time and space, its problem that the management of trainees is not efficient compared with classroom and group education. This problem is a great obstacle to the objects and achievement standards of distance education, giving controversial arguments to the advocators of distance education. Distance educators need to monitor the trainees 'participation and responses continuously and offer appropriate feedback to the trainees. However, the existing distance education system only focuses on teaching and teaming activities, and as a result, the efficient management function of distance education is not available. Accordingly, the study attempts to find out the appropriate managing elements of distance teacher training in order to effectively achieve the goals of teacher training and the efficient management of distance education. Also, it proposes distance teacher training system that offers appropriate feedback to trainees, applying the derived elements of distance teacher training to the training processes. To verify the efficiency of the system, hypotheses on related items of distance teacher education and learning types are suggested, and the achievement of learning and its relations are investigated through questionnaire of learning types.

Prior research has reported that student epistemological beliefs might affect their participation in learning and the process of conceptual change. The purposes of this study were to investigate the characteristics of sixth grade students epistemological beliefs about science and the relation between their epistemological beliefs about science and factors related their learning. For this research questions, 245 sixth grade students participated and various test instruments were used in this study. Students answered two types of questionnaires on epistemological beliefs about science and three test instruments on factors related students' learning(achievement in science, science inquiry skills, and cognitive levels). The results of this study were as follows. First, a large number of elementary school students believed that the purpose of science to perform activities like simple experiments. A lot of students believed that scientific knowledge was changeable according to the nature of scientific knowledge and that scientific knowledge could be learnt on their own. Also, many students believed experiment results to be basis on which to form personal scientific conceptions. Second, students who believed in more modern epistemology about science represented higher levels of science learning achievement, science inquiry skills, and cognitive levels. Therefore, when developing science curriculum, science educators need to consider how to develop student modern epistemological beliefs about science.
