Singular stress fields around three-dimensional wedges are examined, and the near-tip intensity is calculated via the two-state M-integral with the aid of the domain integral representation. A numerical example demonstrates the effectiveness and accuracy of the present scheme for computing the stress intensities of singular stresses near the generic three-dimensional wedges.
This paper intends to introduce a near-tip grid refinement and to explore its usefulness in the crack analysis by the natural element method (NEM). As a sort of local h-refinement in FEM, a NEM grid is locally refined around the crack tip showing the high stress singularity. This local grid refinement is completed in two steps in which grid points are added and Delaunay triangles sharing the crack tip node are divided. A plane-state plate with symmetric edge cracks is simulated to validate the proposed local grid refinement and to examine its usefulness in the crack analysis. The crack analysis is also simulated using a uniform NEM grid for the sake of comparison. The near-tip stress distributions and SIFs that are obtained using a near-tip refined NEM grid are compared with the exact values and those obtained using uniform NEM grid. The convergence rates of global relative error to the total number of grid points between the refined and non-refined NEM grids are also compared.
The T-stress of cracks in elastic sheets is solved by using the fractal finite element method (FFEM). The FFEM, which had been developed to determine the stress intensity factors of cracks, is re-applied to evaluate the T-stress which is one of the important fracture parameters. The FFEM combines an exterior finite element model with a localized inner model near the crack tip. The mesh geometry of the latter is self-similar in radial layers around the tip. The higher order Williams series is used to condense the large numbers of nodal displacements at the inner model near the crack tip to a small set of unknown coefficients. Numerical examples revealed that the present approach is simple and accurate for calculating the T-stresses and the stress intensity factors. Some errors of the T-stress solutions shown in the previous literature are identified and the new solutions for the T-stress calculations are presented.
In case of the infinite body containing a rigid inclusion with line crack shape, stress intensity factor is determined and the relation between stress intensity factor and stress distribution near a crack tip is developed. Also, the relation between stress intensity factor and Kolosoff stress function is developed. Finally, these results are compared with those that the crack surface is under no traction.
In this study, the stress intensity factor of center crack tip is calculated by the superposition method when it is surrounded by symmetrically distributed small cracks. The values of stress intensity factors of center crack tips are compared with those of the center crack tips calculated by the superposition method. These compared errors are influenced by the locations of distributed small cracks. These errors are inspected. When small cracks overlap and approach near the center crack tip, the effect of interaction caused by these cracks becomes noticeable and these errors become larger. In case of multiple distributed small cracks except this case, the stress intensity factor of the center crack tip is easily calculated by the superposition method.
This paper is concerned with the numerical calculation of mixed-mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) of 2-D isotropic functionally graded materials (FGMs) by the natural element method (more exactly, Petrov-Galerkin NEM). The spatial variation of elastic modulus in non-homogeneous FGMs is reflected into the modified interaction integral ${\tilde{M}}^{(1,2)}$. The local NEM grid near the crack tip is refined, and the directly approximated strain and stress fields by PG-NEM are enhanced and smoothened by the patch recovery technique. Two numerical examples with the exponentially varying elastic modulus are taken to illustrate the proposed method. The mixed-mode SIFs are parametrically computed with respect to the exponent index in the elastic modulus and external loading and the crack angle and compared with the other reported results. It has been justified from the numerical results that the present method successfully and accurately calculates the mixed-mode stress intensity factors of 2-D non-homogeneous functionally graded materials.
In this paper, in order to study the geometric factor effect of a circular hole near a crack tip in a semi-infinite plate, the Dimensionless Stress Intensity Factor, $F(=\frac K {\sigma {\sqrt{\pi a}}})$ is analyzed at the crack tip using a two Dimensional Boundary Element Method (BEM) program which is known as superior in Fracture Mechanics. Kelvin's solution was used as a fundamental solution in BEM analysis and displacement extrapolation method was used to determine Stress Intensity Factor.
In this paper, several improved Element-Free Galerkin (EFG) methods containing singular expression in their approximation functions are compared one another through a patch test with near-tip field. Intrinsic enrichments that expand the basis function partially and fully with known near-tip displacement field and a local enrichment using auxiliary supports based on the partition of unity concept are examined by evaluating a relative stress norm error and the stress intensity factor. Some numerical examinations graphically show that how the size of compact support, dilation parameter and the diffraction parameter can affect the accuracy of the improved EFG methods in the error and the stress intensity factor.
The structural materials for cryogenic technology have been recently developed to support the many modern large-scale application from superconducting magnets for nuclear fusion reactor, magnetic levitation railway to LNG tankers. However it is pointed out that quenching phenomenon is one of the serious problems for the integrity of these applications, which is mainly attributed to the rapid temperature rising in the material due to some extrinsic factors of structures. From the viewpoint of fracture mechanics, it is therefore very important to clarify the mechanism of temperature rising of structural material due to cyclic loading at cryogenic temperature. From this purpose, fatigue test was carried out for high manganese steel at liquid helium temperature(4.2K) using triangular stress waveform to identify both the mechanism of temperature rising near crack tip and the effect of loading stress waveform on temperature rising near crack tip and the effect of loading stress waveforms on temperature rising. As the results, two types of temperature rising, that is, regular and burst types were observed. And a periodical temperature rising corresponding to the stress waveforms was also found. The peaks of the temperature rising were recorded near both the maximum and the minimum values of the applied stress. The sudden temperature rises, which indicated the higher values than those of periodical temperature rises under the repetition of stress, were observed at the final region of crack growth. It was shown that the peak values of the temperature rising increased with stress intensity factor range.
