Studies on the Redefinition of Terrestrial Navigation's Basic Terms - mainly on course and heading - (지문항해학 학술용어 개념정립에 관한 연구 - 침로와 선수방향을 중심으로 -)

  • In 1969, Y.J. Yun wrote the terrestrial navigation text book that discussed earth sciences, aides to navigation, chart and publications, tide and tidal current, piloting, rhumb-line sailing, great circle sailing grounded on the hand-on background and theory. It has still been used as a principle text book in a lot of maritime academies and schools. And many contents and definitions came from other terrestrial navigation books published in the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and Japan. But some of them have caused the misunderstanding because they had no enough explanation and explained by incorrect items. In this study, we have found out the problems in the terms course and heading which are related with the direction of the vessel movement, and proposed the amended definitions in order to prevent the misunderstanding and confusion. of them.

A study on the navigation message contents of the future Korean navigation satellite (미래 한국형 항법위성을 위한 위성항법메세지에 대한 연구)

  • Many studies relating the satellite navigation has been done by a relatively small research community in Korea. Most of domestic research has been focused on the application of the satellite navigation technology, but recently the topics of the next generation satellite navigation system are emphasized for its importance. Even opinions suggesting a future Korea's own satellite navigation system are not that uncommon. Due to the geographic, economic, and technological reasons, it is not widely discussed yet. However, a development technical roadmap regarding the Korea's own navigation satellite was established on the Korea Space Development Plan in general term. Currently four global navigation satellite systems are operating or being deployed. Several regional navigation satellite systems are in planning and development phase. Particularly in Asia, China has launched several satellites to complete their own global navigation satellite system, COMPASS until 2020. Japan launched one satellite and has planned to launch rest of set until 2013. It is proper time to develop Korea's own navigation satellite system to acquire the domestic space development technology and the security of navigational infrastructure. In this study, the validity or the feasibility of the Korea's own satellite navigation system is not discussed; rather the possibility and suitability of the additional information to the current operational navigation message is main target. For the first payload of the future Korea's satellite navigation satellite, a regional augmented system is more likely. This study also is focused on that aspect.

Development of Cloud-based VTS Integration Platform for IVEF Service Implementation (IVEF 서비스 구현을 위한 클라우드 기반 VTS 통합 플랫폼 개발)

  • The International Association Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) proposed guidelines for VTS manual operation in 2016 for safe and efficient operation of ship. The Korea Coast Guard (KCG) established and operated 19 VTS centers in ports and coastal waters across the country by 2022 based on the IALA VTS manual and VTS operator's education and training guidelines. In addition, IALA proposed the Inter-VTS Exchange Format (IVEF) Service recommendation (V-145), a standard for data exchange between VTS, in 2011 for efficient e-Navigation system services and safe and efficient VTS service support by VTS authorities. The IVEF service in a common framework for ship information exchange, and it presents seven basic IVEF service (BISs) models. VTS service providers can provide safer and more efficient VTS services by sharing VTS information on joint area using IVEF standards. Based on the BIS data, interaction, and interfacing models, this paper introduced the development of the cloud-based VTS integration services performed by the KCG and the results of the VTS integration platform test-bed for IVEF service implementation. In addition, the results of establishing a cloud VTS integrated platform test-bed for the implementation of IVEF service and implementing the main functions of IVEF service were presented.

Mariner's Performances and the Behavior Fluctuation Affecting Navigational Safety

  • This study aims to identify the degree of safety when mariners take their actions in several different situations. We have carried out many experiments to observe mariners' behavior and then measured the safety level based on their actions to avoid dangerous situations of ships collision. One of the most important actions that mariners have to take, either as their daily routine or when they are in a collision situation and then want to avoid that situation is the lookout. In this paper, behaviors on the lookout have been defined as a standard sequence of three steps which are "time of first detection", "time of recognition as risky vessel" and "time of starting avoiding action", and the suitability and applicability of the definition have been shown. And also we propose the risk assessment on ships collision and the recommendation for reducing ships collision at sea. Some analyzing results and the application of the results are reported. By combining these knowledge and some systematic studies, we propose the risk assessment on ships collision and the recommendation for reducing ships collision at sea.

  • As a part of closed-loop guidance law studies for anti-ballistic missile defense, a mid-course guidance law is proposed to engage the target with the predetermined attitude for increased terminal effectiveness. The proposed guidance law is based on the predicted target position calculated from a simplified solution of target motion and the estimates of an extended Kalman filter utilizing noisy nonlinear radar measurements. Extension of the proposed mid-course guidance to 3 dimensional engagements are also studied. Performance of the proposed mid-course guidance law together with a terminal guidance law in the form of conventional proportional navigation guidance is evaluated by a series of simulation studies.

A Study on PN Phase Modulation Communication System in GPS (GPS 에 있어서의 의사잡음위상변조 통신방식에 대한 연구)

  • The NAVSTAR/GPS is a satellite-based navigation system that will provide extremely accurate three-dimensional position and velocity information to users anywhere on or near the earth. This system has been studied primarly for military use and thus the results of studies are seldom obtainable for civilian use up to date. Expecting this system to be opened to civilian use in the future, this paper aims to the collection of basic data of the PN phase modulated communication system adopted in the GPS system by computer simulation. The results of studies are as follows; 1) The PN phase modulation of the speed of 106b/s can be simulated by Fourier summation, the spectrum region which can be restricted is in the region of 0.5-1.5 MHz and spectrum number required is over than 270. 2) By computer simulation, it is verified that optimum r.f filter bandwidth is about 0.3 MHz for the case of $10^6$b/s PN codes phase modulated in 1.575GHz carrier. 3) In case that PN rate to data rate is between 10 and 100, the allowable minimum SNR to demodulate data signal correctly by optimum LPF is about 0.3. It is also verified that the larger the frequency ratio of PN code to the data code, the lower the allowable minimum SNR required.

A Study for Improving the Positioning Accuracy of DGPS Based on Multi-Reference Stations by Applying Exponential Modeling on Pseudorange Corrections

  • In this paper, a pseudorange correction regeneration algorithm was developed to improve the positioning accuracy of DGPS using multi-reference stations, and the optimal minimum number of reference sites was determined by trying out different numbers of reference. This research was conducted using from two to five sites, and positioning errors of less than 1 m were obtained when pseudorange corrections are collected from at least four reference stations and interpolated as the pseudorange correction at the rover. After determining the optimal minimum number of reference stations, the pseudorange correction regeneration algorithm developed was tested by comparison with the performance of other algorithms. Our approach was developed based on an exponential model. If pseudorange corrections are regenerated using an exponential model, the effect of a small difference in the baseline distance can be enlarged. Therefore, weights can be applied sensitively even when the baseline distance differs by a small amount. Also weights on the baseline distance were applied differently by assigning weights depending on the difference of the longest and shortest baselines. Through this method, the positioning accuracy improved by 19% compared to the result of previous studies.
