Literacy acquisition is a social phenomenon. Children in a literate society grow up with literacy as an integral part of their personal, familial, and social histories. Because it is language, children learn written language in ways similar to oral language. However. because it is written, the ways in which written language differs from oral language in terms of its different functions and forms affect the way in which children learn written language. Written language is likely to be more decontextualized than spoken language. The ability to use decontextualized language seems to be crucial to successful participation and progress in school. Experiences identified as contributing to preschool children's literacy development contribute to their ability to use language in a decontextualized way. Teale and Sulzby's(1986) metaphor of emergent literacy has provided a conceptual scheme for understanding the nature and process of literacy acquisition in early childhood.

Purpose: This study was done to understand the meanings and nature of experiences of the burnout of nurses working in oncology wards. Methods: The hermeneutic phenomenology developed by van-Manen was used. The period for data collection was from November, 2006 to May, 2007. This study took place in 3 university hospitals in B & U cities. Nine nurses working in oncology wards participated. Data collection was done through individual in-depth interviews. Results: The eight most common themes demonstrated by participants from this study were 'being fed up with endless demands', 'collapsing in front of deaths', 'gasping for breath due to overwhelming tasks', 'uncontrollable suffering of body', 'gradually loosing self-esteem', 'frustration from the work world', 'beleaguered relationships', and 'desire to escape'. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that there is a need to develop a preventive burnout program for nurses working in oncology wards.

The present study extends previous research in this area by investigating perceptions of change and reactions to reform efforts by pre-service and practicing secondary school mathematics teachers in the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the United States of America. Interviews were used to gather data about school experiences, teaching practices, and planned changes in mathematics programs. Analysis of the interview data supported earlier findings with respect to the well-planned nature of lessons by PRC teachers and the influence of mathematics contents and examination systems in the PRC. Findings also indicated a general agreement among teachers from both countries favoring less lecturing and more discussion and interactive activities. There were contrasts by nationality in descriptions of future teaching, ideal lessons, sources of teaching ideas, and preferences about school mathematics programs.

Character means a person's nature and the mind and behavior to lead a desirable life personally and socially. Also character can be changed with education and environment. Therefore character education will be possible to do practice through various educational activities and life experiences in school. In other words, we think that students will get person's character required to lead a desirable life personally and socially beyond what they just learn knowledge and skill, enter the higher schools and succeed one's way. This study accepts merits of existing character education policy through subject(mathematics) education and focus on direction for character education through subject(mathematics) education for systematic and synthetic approach for practice of character education. For this, we will see applicability of the plan for character education in the whole subject education, in particular focusing on cases of character education in mathematics subject.

Je Joon Shin Pyeon, of 濟衆新編 is a classic on medicines which was written as an attempt to make the best of many different medicinal classics in order to make the details clear and concise, because Treasure Mirror of Eastern Medicine was thought to be too extensice and broad, or '浩繁'. Since the result was simple and clear in it best sense, it was thought of as the book which ended the habit of being too extensive, or '芟繁'. On the other hand, there was a need to pass on new knowledge and records, due to the fact that there were diseases that have changed in their properties and nature, or that have emerged through the passing of time, and the fact that various experiences on medical treatments have been accumulated and that the medical system have changed. This is in inquiry mainly in aspects of new knowledge that Treasure Mirror of Eastern Medicines have not been able to include in its details.

Seamus Heaney, a famous Irish poet after Yeats, has written some pastoral lyrics from his experiences of farm life and childhood memories. These poems, in spite of his simple overt praise of a rustic farm life, have layers of meaning with their vast allusiveness and implications. He is an extremely literary writer dealing with history from the Celtic myth and a long English literary history. Though his style reminds that of a Victorian poet through his allusions of nature, he is a modern poet of innovative skills and senses. The explication of his representative sonnet sequence, the "Glanmore Sonnets" will reveal exquisite, complicated poetics of a modern poet. The poems are basically love poems, and the love is directed to his beloved wife, his lifetime companion. The poems relate the cultivation of a land to the poet's excavating language from the classics and to the images of love making. Through a careful reading of the sonnets this article will broaden our knowledge on how a modern love lyric of layered meanings can retain the past tradition in its complicated poetics.

The purpose of this study was to assess the attitudes of secondary school students in Korea toward science-technology related issues. A questionnaire was designed in which students were confronted with personal, global, and philosophical levels of arguments, which were composed of three against and three in favor of each eight issues, i.e., use of antibiotics, family planning, transplant of organs, genetic engineering, use of microorganisms. exploitation of the sea, land reclamation from the sea, and nature reserves. Student was requested to rate each argument independently and to vote for or against each issue. It was shown that most of students voted in favor of using technologies except land reclamation from the sea, and that students having more learning experiences on each topic vote more favorably. It is thought that our science education might be effective in increasing awareness and appreciation of benifits of technology, but it is not as effective in developing ambivalence attitudes.

This is a descriptive study with the intent of providing a rich characterization of teachers' perceptions of rate of change. The nature of teachers' perceptions and differences among teachers were examined by collecting data through a survey on teachers' conceptions of rate of change in terms of learning goals, prerequisites, and beliefs about teaching and learning of rate of change, and an interview individually assessing teachers' concept images and definitions. The participating 13 teachers were selected to provide a range of similar and contrasting levels of experiences based on the teachers' educational background and the number of years they had been teaching. Findings and implications of this study are discussed.

Upon entering the 21st Century, One of the new paradigm of Housing industry in Korea is to accomplish the foundation of Sustainable Building & Environment. It is easy to understand that Building environment in Korea is appearing the phenomenon of rapid conversion from supply-oriented market to demand-oriented market. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to suggest the direction of a new housing development with "Open Housing"as New Housing System which takes into account durability of housing based on the changeability among Housing-Components, the flexibility of interior space, the remodeling & repairing of housing and the user′s needs with variable life-style. This paper also shows the example of Infill-Systems for the Open housing in Korea on the basis of housing situation, experiences for the Open Housing including assembly technique of Infill-Systems.

Although scholars have been using qualitative research commonly since 1990 in Korea, discussions on the criteria for the quality of qualitative research have been rare. The purpose of this paper was to analyze the trends of qualitative research methodology in Family Studies, and critically examine qualitative research articles published in the three most prominent journals in the field of family studies. The three journals were Journal of Korean Home Management Association, Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association, and Journal of Family Relations. During the period from 1998 to 2003, twenty seven published articles were identified as qualitative research articles from the three journals. Qualitative research in family studies had a wide variety of purposes, but the articles shared similar characteristics: the main goal was to understand the nature of the research participants' experiences and perspectives. The common data collection techniques were in-depth interview, journal writing, and document analysis. Also, all research articles had applied various techniques to data analysis such as grounded theory, or van Manen's method. This article also discussed the usefulness of qualitative research methodology in broadening and deepening the knowledge body in Korean Family Studies.
